for starters, tell us what's important to you. battery life, size, certain programs/abilities, sound quality, speed, price, bluetooth, 3G, can it wash your dishes? once you give a frame of reference, then people can start giving advice :)

preferably OS of 2.1 or 2.2 , flash enabled, the speed-decent , and the battery life. I don't care too much about rooting or the android store. but those would be a perk. I see so many choices out there it can be overwhelming

@rockinjoey: Are you sure you don't want 3.0? It's moreso geared towards tablets - so I feel like battery use will be optimized, as well as flash-viewing (hopefully).

Wish I could provide more but I'm not all that into tablets. An article on HN assured me that I wasn't the only one who thought so.

I'm not sure Android has reached the point where affordable and best are words I would use to describe it yet, as much as it pains me to admit it. I am personally looking forward to the upcoming Vizio tablet: http://www.vizio.com/news/VIZIOUnveilsNewSmartphoneandTabletFeaturingVIAPlusforEvenoreEntertainmentFreedom/

This is the one I am waiting for.

In the 10" range consider this one:
http://mp4nation.net/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=68&products_id=463
Crappy battery life, resistive touchpad (but surprisingly responsive and 2 point multitouch) crappy camera. That said, it has working market and is incredibly light and thin, 2.1, and sports client and master USB. Astoundingly, the chipset decodes 1080i without breaking a sweat. I wouldn't recommend it for a long flight but, if the charger is close at hand this is surprisingly good.

In the 7" range get a Nook Color and Root it:

The display is incredible, the touchscreen is spectacular, the performance is excellent, it runs just about any app you can throw at it.

If agnostic b/w apple and android, just get the ipad. Tons more apps, and you can't beat apple's ergonomics.

Get a Viewsonic G Tablet. I got one for Christmas. ~$375 online for a 10.1" tab with front facing camera, Android 2.2, capacitive touch screen, swype (can be installed)and dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 1gz processor. Also comes with a usb port like a computer to plug-in keyboards and hard drives etc.
The stock firmware sucks big time but it's a super simple root and the xda dev community have some really fast and functional replacements available. It's practically a Moto Xoom minus the gps and Honeycomb for less than half the price. Oh, and Honeycomb will make its way to the Gtab soon enough :)
It's a no brainer.

@sjahn101: Every tab out there matches Apples ergonomics. It's a slab of glass with a metal back...

I am a happy owner of a Viewsonic G-Tablet because of others who posted deals here on deals.woot!

I've created a deal posting that is current with all the info you need in case you wanna do some research before jumping in.

$380 is the best price I see currently, but its not the absolutely best price ever found for it. I purchased mine for $342.

You should definitely not feel pressured to purchase it right away, take your time, research it and try to find a better deal. If you don't mind used, you can check for returns to Sears stores since it is a pretty lackluster experience in its stock configuration, it has received tons of returns to stores all over.

Besides apples ipad 2 (Now with Camera! I bet) is rumored to come out in March might drive the prices of other tablets down a few bucks.. Not much I'm sure but every dollar counts.

Edit: It's also supposedly relatively easy to root.

Edit edit: If you can find it at kohls or bed bath and beyond you can get it for 50 - 90$ But their all sold out in my location.

In terms of bang for buck, a rooted Nook Color is unbeatable.

If you wait a while, Honeycomb tablets will start to be released (right now the newly-released Xoom is the only one). The HTC Flyer is cool because it has a Wacom-like pen input layer in addition to the capacitive finger-input layer, though there may not be many (any?) non-HTC apps that take advantage of the pen's pressure and tilt sensitivity.

@sjahn101: you missed the part about "flash enabled"? Steve Jobs quote,"should focus more on creating great HTML5 tools for the future, and less on criticizing Apple for leaving the past (read: flash) behind."

no flash for iPad

I'm going to go ahead and throw this http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/galaxy-tab/GT-P1010CWAXAR out there because it seems to be so overlooked. The Wifi version just came out and it seems they are kind of hard to find right now, but for $350 it has great specs. If you have ever messed with any Galaxy S device in a store and liked it, you would love this. Samsung has slightly changed what the Android OS looks like in this but only slightly and it's very nice. Might be worth a look for you. :)

@geomez: Hey, what firmware do you have on your G-tab?

INHO, and I sell electronics so I know, the iPad might be the best tablet out there, but is not worth twice the price of a Kindle Fire or the New Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 that goes on sale this week and it might give the Fire a run for it's noney. When we get the first one in the store, I plan on updating my review of it here:
