Can't go wrong with a Sansa.

@rprebel: my kid has a 8gb Sanza, small, but seems ok. I guess I'm looking for something a little bigger size wize so I can read the screen!

How many songs to you wish to carry with you? Do you want FM/AM tuner? What about internet access for steaming things like Pandora?

I have had hit and miss experiences with all the MP3 player myself and my family have owned. Apple has been the exception to that, but they are priced higher then others.

Sony and Sansa do make pretty good MP3 players and if you want something cheap, usually the off-brands will work well.

Sorry, but I love my apple products. The new nanos have an fm tuner and a substantial battery life, if you're looking for something small. That said, I've heard good things about the Sansa players and they seem to be available really cheap through newegg.

I just set up a Sansa Clip Zip for a friend of mine today. It has a larger screen than the Clip + and it has a color screen. It's a nice little player. Read about it here: Link to Clip Zip

You could go with the Cowon S9. I used to have a Cowon x5, and I was very happy with it. They're known for having particularly good DAC chips (better sound quality), and their players can handle nearly any file format you throw at them.

I'm still luven my zune. Has all the basic apps but its main focus is the music. So everything sounds on par especially if you get some good bass earphones.

Sansa Clip+ (choose your size) and slap a 32G card in there.
Battery life on it is almost forever.
For storage, I have a 2-3 32Gs laying around with different content/genres for a quick and easy 'synch'.
I color code my sd cards by painting a dot on it with my wifes nail polish.

@raremonkey: I love my Zune HD, but I thought Microsoft killed off the product line, and Zune only lives on as the music interface on the new windows phones

I still have my Creative Zen from like 6 years ago and I still love it! It really helps that I can put Actual MP3's on it instead of having to upload and convert :)
