I have a method for finding deals, but I'm not telling.

For getting stuff to hit popular, it is sort of hit or miss. Unusual items seem to have a pretty good chance to be voted to popular. Remember even if something gets enough votes it does not mean it will hit popular.

Same as Catbertthegreat. I am not telling.

And ditto with getting to Popular. I don't actually care about getting to Popular. I just like finding deals that I personally think are cool. If enough of you all think it is cool too that is even better, but that is never my aim in life. Although I do get frustrated when a deal has enough votes and doesn't make it over to popular, but those are usually deals that aren't even mine.

@weakgeek: What does it matter whether or not you get to Popular? I'm always puzzled by those people who submit deal after deal, for no real reward that I can see. Post stuff you'd want. If you post too many deals, you start to look like a bot, or like a representative of a particular site.

Now, mind you, I'll vote for something from a site, posted by one of those accounts, IFF the site is reputable, and the deal seems worthwhile. I often vote for BH photo stuffs. There are other sites where I not only don't vote when I see them from that role account, I'll go off and look at the user tab of someone ELSE who posts deals from that site, just to see if they're a shill. I wondered about you (weakgeek) for quite a while, since it seemed that you were always posting for the same web site, but looking at the intermediate links suggests that you were after nothing but fame and glory.

Remember, less is more.

@hobbit: I've noticed that it almost doesn't MATTER how many votes something has, if it's in a certain time window (around 4PM Pacific to around 8PM Pacific), it seems to just site there on Fresh. Sometimes things posted in the late afternoon on Deals are just doomed to anonymity. Doomed Deals. I love alliteration.

@shrdlu: I like to think of myself more as a tool rather than a shill. :)

I posted a lot of stuff from geeks because they run their site like a tech rummage sale which I think is a nice change from the neweggs and amazons of the world.

Then I realized that there's a reason the big sites are so big, people usually prefer to buy expensive items from nice stores and not from the back of a van with dark tinted windows in a parking lot. People also like convenience. Everything in one shopping cart is easy, real or virtual. So, I started to looking for deals from more main-stream sites.

So the bottom line: I'm a tool pwned by woot. But I'm no shill...

vote-for1vote-against

@weakgeek: Oh, I understand you're not a bot (or a shill). I was pointing out, however, that numerous posts in a short time, or always from the same place, will make folks discount your deals. No sense devaluing the brand of self (weakgeek, in your case).

vote-for1vote-against

@shrdlu: Popularity is more of a game for me. Why do people climb ridiculously tall mountains at the risk of their own life? Beats me. Why does weakgeek want to post and item that goes viral on deals.woot? Because the numa numa trick probably won't work again. Without video. On a site just for deals.

vote-for1vote-against

@weakgeek: You want popularity? Go post a deal from that underwear site that @jockovonred was posting from for a time. Actually, he's been pretty successful, as has @wootvan. Go look at the type of things they post, and WHEN (timing is very important), and you'll see that they get an average of one in ten (or so). @catbertthegreat and @hobbit are also people whose deals you should look at.

Personally, popularity matters not at all to me. If I lose interest here, and go away for six months, and come back, where the active members are all people who don't know me, that's fine. Mind you, I enjoy many of the people that are here, now, but... life is change. Change is good.

vote-for1vote-against

@shrdlu: Posting deals with pics of scantily clothed models is not very sportsman-like. It's like shooting fish in a barrel.

I like the kinetic clock that shot up to the top the other day (http://tinyurl.com/y9q9v8m). It was posted by what I think is a bot (@snagstuff) yet it still had a meteoric rise to popularity before crashing to earth.

Anyway, I'll just have to discover my inner-dealmeister or else remain a tool.

Thanks for the answers!

vote-for2vote-against

@weakgeek: I don't recall ever posting a deal from a site with scantily clad people on it. I know the guys in Celtic Thunder wear clothes all the time, even if they are kilts for one number.

vote-for1vote-against

@hobbit: Sorry, I was referring to the first paragraph of shrdlu's post about all those lingeriedealoftheday.com items that become popular. I wasn't targeting anyone in particular.

I don't think I have good enough taste in women's shoes, either. :)

Maybe screen names are important. My screen name is, well, pretty self-deprecating. But @wootiewooterson and @prettywootprincess seem to do well and they have nice screen names.

Maybe I should create a whole new persona: onlythebestdeals or dealpwnage. How about uberdealstudmuffin. Too much?

vote-for2vote-against

@weakgeek: @wootiewooterson and @prettywootprincess don't really count for deals. They are staff members. Honestly if you are this stressed out about getting popular deals I would just take a break for a few days/weeks and then come back and ONLY post a FEW deals a day, JUST the good ones not EVERY SINGLE deal from a site.

vote-for2vote-against

@weakgeek: Please stick with just what you have. That one is already known, now. Those other people you referred to are Woot Staff. Very nice woot staff, but still staff. There are plenty of clever names. Your choice was only unfortunate in that the first time I noticed you, it was for geeks dot com deals. I don't buy there (I am VERY picky about where I buy from), and that was the only place you were posting from.

A natural assumption for people would be that you were an employee. @snaggstuff is a known user account that only posts deals for that web site. It isn't a bot, as far as I know, and I can make fairly educated guesses about those that are.

Keep the name you have now. On the other hand, try posting deals from sites that more conservative folks would buy from, like Amazon or Best Buy (actually, I don't buy anything from there, but that's because I think they're a bunch of wanking idiots). YMMV. HTF. HAND.

@hobbit: Thanks! Is this the first woot intervention? Perhaps I should register a domain name, woot12stepprogram.com. :)

My humor tends to run a bit sardonic so don't mind me. I'll always be @weakgeek.

Thanks for the tip on those accounts, @shrdlu.

Maybe this is better asked in a new question. I've noticed that sometimes users will add another user's name to the item tags. For example, @hobbit, you added "shrdlu" as a tag here: http://tinyurl.com/y9x93aa. Is that to make it easier for someone to find it via a search?

vote-for1vote-against

@weakgeek: It's only to be funny. Actually, #funny is a great tag to use.

The pound sign, by the way, MEANS it's a tag. Go ahead. Click on it. It'll be funny.

vote-for3vote-against

@weakgeek: I did that for that deal, because it was a challenge deal. She challenged us to find her a camera. We do that once in a while when we are posting challenge deals.

vote-for1vote-against

Thanks for all the tips, they're very helpful!

vote-for3vote-against

@shrdlu: I used to go to geeks dot com. It was located in an industrial park in Oceanside, CA. I do not know if they are in the same location, as I no longer drive. If you were into personal computers in the 70's and 80's, then you have seen those stores that sort of looked like tech garage sales. Geeks reminded me of those. Yes, I actually visit here, now and then, just to see what is happening. Keep up the good work.

vote-for1vote-against

Well, my deal for the Reboot animated series on DVD just made it to the top of the popular tab. Woohoo!

So, I don't really know if posting something unique caused it to move up. It didn't have a lot of votes so that's not the key.

I'm wondering if popularity is based on click-throughs on the product link.

Thanks for everyone's helpful observations.
