challenge: looking for fire extinguisher.
i need to get some new fire extinguishers for my home. the ones i have are 15 years old and small. i am willing to consider a bunch of smaller ones, but would prefer a few medium sized. dh keeps talking about some that don't leave the mess tradional style ones leave. any help?

It sounds iffy, but I am serious - check Craigslist. 1-2 year old 5# extinguishers can be had for about $15-20/each as opposed to $40 new.
The reason - NFPA requires annual inspections on fire extinguishers ... which by the time they pay someone to certify them, it'd almost be cheaper for them to just buy a new one.
To clarify, the annual inspection applies to commercial, not household. Nobody but yourself will be checking if any fire extinguishers in your home are up to date.
I think the ones your friend was talking about had the special chemical that evaporates when fighting the fire. So some of it goes away vs. the typical dry chemical that stays everywhere.
@j3falcon: The popular brand name is 'Tundra'. Mess & powder free, like the now-outlawed Halon extinguishers.
I have gone with several smaller extinguishers in handy but out of the way places. If I have 4, but 1 fails, I'm still OK. 1 big one's nice, but I've had that before and if there's ANY problem with it, it's a bad time to find out.
@havocsback: thanks for the name. the menards near me put them on sale this week ($10+free smoke detector) so i will be picking up several.
