I did run away when I was younger. It was probably about 1970 when I packed a bag and walked down the street. My parents say that they were watching me from the window so I wasn't in any real danger. I waited a while, didn't know where to go, got hungry and then eventually went back home for dinner.

I ran away from home once. Packed a bag, laid in some provisions and my favorite outfits, and just took off. But I came back. I had to poop. It never occurred to me that there were places to poop besides home. I think I was five....

Of course, I think it is part of the human condition, to at least fantasize about walking away, every once in a while. I am sorry to hear you had a rough week. And IMHO, I applaud you for not succumbing to it. Some pressure is transitory, and will get better with time. Other times, this is the universe, telling you you need to make a change. And then there is just the run of rotten luck. I hope it is the short lived kind, and it gets better for you soon. : )

@cengland0: my kid did that no shoes in the winter, took about 1 1/2 mintues before he turned around. I think the stranger freaked him out that offered to help the little boy with no coat or shoes standing in the snow. (I know it freaked me out I was already yelling down the road, he is running away from home, he knows what he is doing)

@cengland0: Ha, when I ran away, as a child, I took my Halloween candy. Still went home later that evening, anyway, probably for some pepto.

@pickypickypicky: Thank you for your kind words. I like to think of myself as a mature adult who has some immature moments. Last week everything seemed to hit me all at once. This week I am better. I am making things better.

I still feel like running away at times, but then I think about "who would feed the cat and dog?" I guess it is the human condition to sometimes just feel like being or doing something else. But like the children, we just find it is not workable! My grandma used to tell me that if everyone put their worries and troubles in a bag, and all of the bags were placed in the middle of the room, everyone would pick up his own to deal with. Something like dealing with the devil you know vs the one you don't.

why does everyone insist on 'running' away? I'd rather walk and save my energy :D

I do run away sometimes. About once a year, I take a mini-vacation of 2 or 3 days just to get away from everything and everyone I know. Sometimes I'll fly halfway across the country, sometimes I'll just drive to another town a couple of hours away. But for that time, I'm completely incommunicado (except for emergencies). It's amazing how quickly one can recharge just having a couple of days not to worry about family, bills, work or anything else except yourself.

My wife has every right to do the same, of course, but she's only taken advantage of it a couple of times. I think she's too afraid to leave because she thinks the house will be in ruins when she gets back.

I've always thought about it, and even acted on it a few times. When I was younger, I did what everyone above me did, packed a bag, and started walking. I was trying to avoid a pusnishment i knew was coming when the parents got home. I got about a mile away, and figured I was going to hitchhike and save myself some time (not knowing where my destination was). I was actually picked up, and could've had any number of things happen to me, but luckily it was one of my parent's friends, who drove me home for a wicked talking to.

Later in life, I got myself into a lot of trouble after high school, and decided I was giong to move to a different town to get away from it all. Day after my 21st birthday, the week I was moving, the cops showed up to my folks house and took me to jail, where I got to spend some "shock time". This was really the turning point in my life, and it's what drove me to be where I am today.

Moral of my stories- sometimes the running just delays the inevitable.

@barnabee: Sometimes it does that, always hits hard. They always say, it comes in threes, but I sometimes wish it were only three, when things pile up on me. But often, it isn't as bad as it seems like it is, when you are in the middle of it. Your last sentence said it well. And remember, laughter is good for the soul, and you can always find that here. Here in this thread even. Good luck!

@iggz: Off topic, but where have all of your haters gone? The last few comments I have seen from you haven't been drastically downvoted. (Sorry if that was a wake-up call to them.) Back on topic, I would love to drop everything and get a new start, but my kids and ball-and-chain couldn't handle the bills. I also hope that they might miss me just a little bit...I know the dog would, because I am the one who feeds him every day.

@iggz: WHERE have you been, you bad child, you?

vote-for2vote-against

I did. Now I'm stuck with a contract in China for a year XD

Yes, ever since two of my married children moved back in with us and brought their families.

Actually did last week for our aniversary. Only a couple of nights but it was great! Bad point though, our first night at dinner, we did nothing but talk about our kids until I realized what we were doing...kinda negates the reason for leaving.

Almost everyday! I wonder what I would take with me when I leave....

@lavikinga: I was actually going to ask about where @iggz is in a question, but was afraid of the "are you asking to build rep?" accusation.

@caffeine_dude: I know he has a rep for being an utter rapscallion, but he makes me laugh when he's in a jokey mood, rather than a take-no-prisoners mood.

@lavikinga: He reminds me of me when i was younger (sorry iggz) I know he said he was 23 but I am guessing he in school right now.
