Hope you get better soon @xarous, but in the meantime, I hope you get a new roommate.

@moosezilla: I don't know anything about his family/friends situation, but since this is evidently not an in-and-out hospital stay, I wonder if it would be helpful for a family member or very close friend to set up a page on www.caringbridge.org. It's a free site, password protected, for when someone is ill and there are many people who would like updates and to send good wishes. One of my former bosses was battling cancer last year, and his caringbridge site let his family and friends get updates (in this case, entered by his wife whenever there was any news) without having to pester anyone.

It can be set with many levels of privacy, and folks who access the page can request an automated email notice whenever there's a new journal entry.

Just a thought, in case no one was familiar with it.

Many thanks for keeping us apprised.

---waving to @xarous and sending best wishes---

I just discovered the entries and updates left on the initial page (after I'd commented there on the 22nd). The Spouse says I'm a Global Earth Mother and chronic worrier, and it's true. This ---> $#@%&@!! is me saying many bad words.

@moosezilla, once again 'thank you' for the news updates.

@xarous: I have a couple more monkeys. Would they be of any happy company for you?

Wishing you a speedy recovery, @xarous

Chiming in with good thoughts and wishes.

Ugg, on the roommate thing. Seems like there would be rules for noise, visit times and only one TV!??!

@xarous Wishing you the best, you truly are a great member of the woot community.

xarous checked in on friday evening around 8 central. this is what he said: on potassium iv, white counts still up, on fourth trach, still can't eat, has lost 13 pounds, swallowing is still fubar, still lots of pain

@magic_cave: xarous is there alone, so we are getting updates from him. his family is in south carolina. so your idea is be good, but wouldn't work.

to all: please keep the prayers/thoughts/hopes/wishes coming. he is great need.

vote-for5vote-against

Paging mods @prettywootprincess or whoever is there today - can we get a box of carp sent to @xarous somehow? I'd hate to be in the hospital alone.

vote-for5vote-against

@xarous Thinking of you and wishing you a speedy recovery. (hugs) We miss having you here with us! See you soon! :)

in case anyone is still checking this thread: here is the link to the hospital's web page. anyone can send xarous a free ecard through their system. his real name is jonathon b o y d (without the spaces). he is in the cox south unit. http://home2.coxhealth.com/caremail/

thought this might be a way to help cheer him up some

UPDATE: Latest update from @xarous, from around 11am woot time today (Sunday) -- http://pastebin.com/hTy2XYJB

Doc also says xarous has lost around 20 lb total since he got to the hospital. O.o

vote-for7vote-against

@kalira and @moosezilla: Thanks to both of you for the ongoing updates.

vote-for6vote-against

I am working with some people here to see what we can do. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated with regards to what we can send.

vote-for6vote-against

@prettywootprincess: Sounds as if eating is especially tricky for him. Maybe something to facilitate soft/gooshy/liquid foods and beverages?

Entertainment items, since it may still be a while till he can get back to work? Blankies, for couch lounging?

@prettywootprincess: How about some TheraPearls from sport.woot?

vote-for7vote-against

@prettywootprincess: How about throwing in a Wootopoly game? One can never have too many Wootopoly games. (Maybe he and his daughters would like to play when he gets home.)

Oh, and a signed get well card from some of the Woot staff. That would be priceless.

vote-for4vote-against

I will gather all ideas for the next two hours. (6pm CT) We hope to send this out tomorrow.

@kalira, @baqui, @captainsuperdawg, @lien007, @registered @meh3884, @publicart, @marcee, @lichme, @bogie, @jezebelseven, @cowboydann, @shrdlu, @thumperchick, @agingdragqueen, @magiccave... and so on page everyone who would be interested.

@prettywootprincess: I know a personal hobby of his is cooking. He often will speak of different foods he has prepared and will show pictures of meals he thinks came out especially well. Something in this area would get use when life returns to normal.

He also has 2 young daughters that really are his world. I'm sure he would rather see things aimed towards them then himself if he had a choice.

vote-for6vote-against

@prettywootprincess: I love you. What a kind and generous heart you have, both for this, and for other things. I hope they just keep you in your current position; let the people they hire be your flunkies.

@moosezilla, @kalira, and the others over on deals chat have been very supportive for Xarous and all that he's been going through.

Here's some suggestions:

Blender for turning yummy food into smoothees.
Books that his daughters can read to him (someone else may be able to specify specific ages for them).
Gift card for Amazon (for food and provision subscriptions, for when he goes home)

It might be necessary to provide a text to speech application; here's one to test out.

Thanks for the notification, PWP.

@prettywootprincess: Got anything Rocky Horror Picture themed? :) Xar is a bit of a theater (and maybe drag) fan.

vote-for8vote-against

@prettywootprincess: Hey sorry i been crazy busy at work but i made a point to make it here before cutoff. I have had it in the back of my minf. I am kind of agreeing with raider, something for his kids and him would be great.

If it were me i'd be stoked to get a card from staff members. That would probably be one of the best gifts you guys could get him. Oh and woot exclusives. Like that Make your own woot monkey cape, monkeys, woot-lights. All that swag is the best. Oh oh, throw in a few woot-monkey games monkeys. 2011,2012 those would be coo ltoo

Man you guys are all awesome! I can't wait till i'm done stressing over my move and can settle in and get back involved with the community!

Last night @xarous told us he was going to have to go in for another round of surgery, as they had found another mass in his throat. There's a possibility his infection involves a superbug, which is why it's continuing to throw off masses and why it's taking him so long to recover. Joy :(

If he's got surgery today, I wouldn't expect much in the way of updates from him, but I'm sure @moosezilla or another of the crew from the chat will drop by if there's news.

And I love that woot is going to send @xarous a care BOC. Definitely a reminder of the good ol' days at woot.

spent about an hour chatting with xarous earlier this evening. the surgery didn't go well, he is on his 7 or 8 trach, he has lots of other "issues" going medically, and is in a really really bad place mentally.

PLEASE PLEASE SEND HIM AN ECARD: http://home2.coxhealth.com/caremail/ real name jonathan b o y d and he is in the south unit. you don't have to put a room number in, but please put some words of encouragement in there for him.

vote-for7vote-against

@moosezilla: This is beginning to worry me. Genuinely worry me. Thanks for your regular updates. I sent him an ecard when you first provided a link, and I'll send another one immediately.

vote-for7vote-against

Send a card to a stranger, rack up some karma points, y'all. I didn't mean that to sound sarcastic, I really want to encourage anyone who is hesitating to click that link and send @xarous a card.

vote-for7vote-against

I'm in. Sent one just now. It's the absolute least I can do for a fine member of our community!

vote-for8vote-against

BTW - I'm really curious about that Caremail system. That's pretty cool. Can anyone find out - or does anyone know - do they actually print out the "card" and bring that to the room or does it pop up on a TV/Tablet or some other device? I work in a hospital and we don't have anything like that but I'd really love to suggest it.

vote-for7vote-against

@bingo969: Our local hospitals actually print the cards and hand deliver them, but only on weekdays 8-5 (like no one needs a card on the weekends!) Hospital volunteers or the chaplains are in charge.

I got an e-mail confirmation from @xarous' hospital saying the card I sent had been printed and hand delivered - pretty cool, indeed!

Wed afternoon: Had blood and bile in the lungs Couldn't clear it. body did a good job though. breathing is getting stronger After scope they want to switch trach To a smaller one that would allow me to swallow and talk Still in bed they want to send me out of icu to a stepdown unit So I can be mobile White count is 28 Hemoglobin is still wonky they have specialists, cultures are coming back as common, but the bacteria doesn't die. we have been through tons of antibiotics The three surgeries were for to physically attack the bacteria masses that were forming in neck With antibiotics to mop up Superbugs
are you in pain? yeah but not too bad, normal daily pain is 3-4, here I've been 5-8 Morphine and loratab when I ask

Wednesday evening: Scope found huge ulcer in g.i. & they clamped it. Watching me tonight, should be out of icu tomorrow & in a stepdown room with a trach that will allow speaking & eating. Hope the blood work will come back with good news.

seems in much better spirits

@xarous: Hope you are feeling better today! Good luck. Our thoughts are with you and your family.

Latest updates from Thursday:

(10:15am woot time) -- Been losing blood all night, hemoglobin down around 7.7, they are going to give me two units of blood and watch the next twelve hours. Trach was switched to one that allows speech and eating. Ulcer was close to 4cm, if still bleeding they will consult for surgery. Still wishing for the best. Thanks for all the thoughts, prayers, texts, letters, and more.

(8:00pm woot time) -- Hemoglobin went from 7.7 to 10.4. Appears to be going the right way now. Working on moving me out of ICU to stepdown, then on to the regular floor, and hopefully out the door. We don't know 100% about the ulcer and bleeding, but looks good. Btw all of you fabulous deals people are making me 'semi-celebrity' here.

I love that last bit... I think he needs more cards, how 'bout you guys?

vote-for4vote-against

@kalira: Maybe you or @moosezilla should start a new thread so it's closer to the top. Post the link to the cards again.
Don't be shy, people! Click the link, it's free, it's easy, and it's a nice thing to do! Make @xarous proud to be part of a community of nice people!
By the way, we need an update from @prettywootprincess on the alleged BOC.
