I am abstaining from the flu shot this year as an experiment.

I never get flu shots. The last time I had influenza was in 1976, when a surgical assistant came to work and infected everyone who had surgery that day (I was one of them). I don't get colds, either. It would make no sense for me to get a shot; what if the shot destroyed my natural resistance?

No thank-you. I'd rather not give my immune system something to be dependent on.

Nope here also. Never had one in my life, why start now? No regrets so far.

No flu shots here, either, unless that's a new brand of whiskey.

I get a flu shot every year. I have not had a cold or flu for the past 3 years. Without the shot, I used to have at least 2 colds, sometimes flu, and another couple of bouts of the "feel yuckie but nothing specific" so I get them, every year.

Few years back I got a severe sinus infection, which lead to very minor asthma, which suddenly escalated into bronchitis and bad asthma. Once I finally got it nixed, it happened every spring and fall for three years. Not saying that it has anything to do with the flu shot except that, if you do happen to catch the flu, you never know what else might trigger because of it. Coincidentally, I've gotten flu shots the last two years, after not having one in about 15, and I haven't had bronchitis once.

On a side note-- I had my flu shot last Thursday. The doctor informed me about a pneumonia shot. He said that all you need is 2, in your life time, and you're immune to it. Everyone I've talked to had no idea that this vaccine was available, so... here's a head's up to the woot community?

Stay well, all.

I am always interested in how many do vs don't . I did get one years ago it was the first time since I was a like got the flu. (and the time I sat in a hospital room for 5 days with my highly contagious kid with lack of a good night sleep in a bed.). If I take good care of myself when I feel bad I can avoid the flu, I hope!

I happened to see a new doctor just yesterday, and when she offered, I figured I should just go ahead. We are supposedly in for a particularly brutal winter here in Chicagoland, and I tend to get run down. Better safe than sorry.

The only time I ever got one, I came down with the flu within hours. There had been no cases of flu either at my home or at work, it had to be the shot. I was miserably sick for five days. Never again.

(I've since read that live flu viruses can sometimes make it through the processing phase, but I don't know if that's possible. Based on all the biochem and microbiology classes I took in college, I'm skeptical of that idea.)

I've already had it... thanks for asking.

Nahhhhhhh. Never have.

If I ever get pregnant I might consider it... but if I were to ever get pregnant, well... that would be a whole 'nother issue.

I actually just got the FluMist on Monday, and at the same time took my 13-month-old to get his first flu shot. Can't beat public clinics, right?

vote-for2vote-against

I seem to get it more than I don't, and I still get sick.

The strain of the flu that is mass produced is the one that will be most effective for the population but not for EVERYONE. I always seem to be in the 10% no matter what I do, so I just take it as it comes.

i work in a hospital, so if i dont get a flu shot, i have to wear a mask the entire time.... so flu shots for me every year

vote-for2vote-against

Yes, I will be getting it... maybe tomorrow.

vote-for2vote-against

Yep, took 5 minutes out of my day at work to go get it. Work sponsored and paid for.

@stizark: I got my first pneumonia shot several years ago and the second one 2 years ago. After two episodes of pneumonia, one while I was in grad school, I was happy to have a way to fight back.

My family was part of a flu study with a local University (we are part of the group that opts out of the shot each season). The 2010-2011 results were that flu shot did not decrease the number of flu cases. It also did not decrease the number of H1N1 cases either.

We are scheduled to be part of the 2011-2012 study. Results get published in the late Spring.

Don't plan to get a shot. Never have. I seldom get sick so don't feel it will enhance my living.

Yea I will...wife works in the hospital and can bring illness home...like a rabid animal :P
