The theme from the original Star Trek TV series is what always plays in my head whenever hearing about or thinking about anything in any way related to space exploration and the search for knowledge about the rest of our universe.

@reginafilangee: Good one. Time for sleep + Star Trek dreams.

Space Travel Is Boring - Modest Mouse

Hah just kidding, The first song that came to mind was this. Space (I believe in) - Pixies

I don't know if that's my favorite, but it's the first thing to come to mind.

So it's not a song, but the album Blows Against the Empire, by Jefferson Starship is my favorite. I listen to it straight through at least once every month or 2. It's about a bunch of hippies hijacking the starship that the government built and disappearing with it. It's wonderful, and 100% worth a listen!

I'm too fussy to narrow this down to one song. I'll be in the corner here blasting Man or Astroman? instead. :)

I like the Theme song from Firefly, Rocket Man, and Major Tom (both the Bowie and Schilling versions), but my favorite song about conquering space is more obscure, from a folk singer named Leslie Fish from Phoenix. She wrote a song called Hope Eyrie in honor of the Apollo 11 moon landing that says it all for me:

The chorus goes:
But the Eagle has landed; tell your children when.
Time won't drive us down to dust again.

sleeping satellite

I blame you for the moonlit sky
and the dream that died with the eagles' flight.
I blame you for the moonlit nights when
I wonder why are the seas still dry?
Don't blame this sleeping satellite.

Did we fly to the moon too soon,
did we squander the chance in the rush of the race,
the reason we chase is lost in romance.
And still we try to justify the waste for a taste
of man's greatest adventure oh.

Have we got what it takes to advance?
Have we peaked too soon?
If the world is so green
Then why does it scream under a blue moon?
We wonder why
If the earth's sacrificed
For the price of its greatest treasure.

And when we shoot for the stars
What a giant step;
Have we got what it takes
To carry the weight of this concept
Or pass it by?
Like a shot in the dark
Miss the mark with a sense of adventure.

I second "Major Tom." It was the first thing I thought of when I saw the question.

@barnabee: I like David Byrne's Red Hot and Blue version. And thanks for sharing everyone; I need to put this together as a playlist on Spotify or somewhere. Looking forward to listening to the ones I'm not familiar with.
