I grew up in Pittsburgh where hoagie and sub were interchangeable.

In the midwest (Southern IL), it's usually a sub. But our local cuisine is lacking for the most part in sandwiches of that type unless you're headed to a national chain like Quiznos, Jimmy Johns or Subway. All of those call their sandwiches subs.

Chiming in from Raleigh, NC. Hoagie and sub are the same though sub is much more prominent (probably having to do with all the chains). Local places also use sub unless it's something new or big or they're trying to really push it. Then sometimes it gets the Hero title.

I live in Western Mass, no one here calls them subs. They're known as grinders. Oddly enough, I'm from near Baltimore originally, and they were always called subs....occasionally a hoagie.

In Western Virginia, they are subs. My area sounds a lot like @omnichad's.

My folks were from PA and so I grew up w/ "hoagie." But I grew up in NY and it's "sub" all the way !
They taste good to me no matter what you call them.

In northwestern WA, they're pretty much called subs everywhere, however I see hoagie every once in awhile, especially at grocery stores where they make them in-house.

On a related angle, is there anyone who lives near a pizzeria that calls them 'tomato pies'?
And are 'cheese steaks' available where you live?
I am in NW MT and there are (2)! places locally that make great steak sandwiches. They actually have Amoroso's rolls shipped in from Philly!

Nothing but subs in the southern area....there is no "HoagieWay" or "Firehouse Torpedoes".

I lived in mid-Atlantic all my life and usually say Sub, or occasionally Hoagie (depending on the bread).

Growing up in Connecticut, they were called Grinders or Subs.

Pensylvania has no concept on what to call them.......what the hell is a Hoagie anyway?
