I like Chuck AND the Old Spice Man (not too old for me, heh, heh). Thanks @hobbit.

it is the fresherestest

@armagedon: I'm so glad you posted that link. I had NO idea what dearest @hobbit was talking about. I still don't know who or what "Chuck" is, but I can live with that.

Gentlemen who may be considering using old spice: the model has a beautiful voice, and he's very attractive. Old Spice still smells NASTY. Yuck. Not as horrid as that nightmare that Woot was putting in boxes for a while (Axe), but still pretty awful. Clean is good. Men don't need perfume.

[Whoever's on staff, kudos for the quick response on spammers numbering two.]

@shrdlu: Well, unless she means this Chuck http://www.facebook.com/pages/Old-Spice-Guy-vs-Chuck-Norris/135442816488080 then I have no idea either. (See 2nd edit)

Edit: I just noticed what happens when you try to delete a comment it says 'Are you sure you want to tase this comment, bro?'
Thank you woot for making my night.

Edit again: Ohh, I figured out what she meant. It is a TV show http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_%28TV_series%29

I've never seen it though...

@armagedon: That voice of his. Oh, that voice of his.

Hubs and I went out the other night and when we got in the car I commented on his new cologne. "I'm not wearing cologne.:::sniffsniff::: Oh, yeah, I ran out of deodorant and borrowed yours."
Wow, I didn't know I smelled so fresh and clean (and now I know how strong the fragrance is. Time to switch to unscented if they make it). No Old Spice for him. Smells like my Dad who I love very much, but no. Hubs needs to wear a different fragrance.
For the longest time he used to smell of Grey Flannel/JP5/Airplane. Used to permeate his clothing and gear for months after returning from cruise. I miss those days.

@armagedon: Thanks for the explanation. I've never heard of the show, but that doesn't mean much. I think the dancing with the stars thing had been on for several years before I had heard of it, and I have never seen it. I often watch House, but it's beginning to be a bit worn at the edges.

I watch The Daily Show, Colbert Report, Sixty Minutes, and the CBS Sunday Morning show. Now and then I dip into Smoking Gun (hey, everyone needs a vice, right?). There's very little on network television that interests me, and the premium channels that used to show movies are all trying to do "edgy" series. Mostly they're just more vulgar, and yet they manage to achieve the same minuscule heights of shallow pointlessness that the network shows do.

I like books. This is an excellent book.

@shrdlu: Ya, I'm becoming less and less interested in House, however I recently started watching How I Met Your Mother and it is hilarious. I've been lately resorting to movies, but they repeat the same movie so much that I have seen most of them.

I really enjoy reading and at the moment am rereading the Eragon series. I may look into that book sometime though (I don't only read fantasy novels :P, cough...Harry Potter).

@hobbit: Awesome declaration on the find! Even if it's post-facto, I'm definitely going to watch this one! :)

@shrdlu: I'm sure that among the multiplicity of scents that Old Spice has there is one that you wouldn't think smelled "icky"... But it is funny to hear you say, nonetheless.

@lavikinga: Secret makes a great unscented deodorant/antiperspirant. It is actually some pretty strong stuff, all things considered.

@arosiriak: You are wrong on this one. I loathe perfume. You may call it anything you like; cologne, aftershave, parfume, scented soap, spring fresh detergent (now there is a genuine misnomer)...

The story is that it was invented to mask the smell of winter filth, when people felt it was unhealthy to bathe. I see nearly a full aisle of that garbage in the grocery store. I cannot imagine purchasing something to make my house stink. I'd rather open the windows and let in some fresh air. I've also been known to clean the house, which is a good prophylactic for the prevention of stench.

If I want my house to smell sweet, I cut a bouquet of roses, or wallflowers, or even bring in a bunch of sweet alyssum (although it really needs the sun on it to release its scent). I'd rather smell them outside, though. A few sprigs of spearmint is nice, too, or a bit of crushed catmint.

I don't want to know all the scents of Old Spice. I prefer to know NONE of them. Yuck.

@shrdlu: Trust me - I know full well the history of French colognes and their origins... :) And while I agree with you on things just being clean, in general, I also enjoy some additional, artificial fragrances in moderation (the key of that was in moderation). My tendency has always been towards natural scents, so alyssum is very familiar and beloved in my family, as are honeysuckle, mint, thyme, etc. I also have a strong inclination towards rosemary - love that scent. And cinnamon... Hated it as a kid, but I've grown to adore it.

@hobbit: Sorry about the digression... mea culpa - in part, anyway

vote-for3vote-against

The digression was fine.

I loved how he actually kind of played his Old Spice Man character. It was great.

vote-for2vote-against

@hobbit: His character is awesome! It's hilariously stereotypical, but not so overly done that it's offensive. Just good, clean, smelly fun!

I still think that the BYU spoof is pretty much amazing! @djbowman posted it a while back, and knowing some people at the University makes it even better!

Random miscellanea...

Chuck airs on NBC (not CBS) -- at least in most markets. It's one of those shows that has a loyal but small fan following and is the topic of much speculation amongst rating-hounds (Will they renew it, won't they renew it?). The president/CEO of NBC (Jeff Zucker), btw, was recently "released" earlier than expected. These same rating-hounds will tell you that NBC's overall ratings last year were awful (and that may have helped get Chuck renewed).

My father used to work for American Cyanamide who used to make old spice. We used to have crates of old space which we bought at discount.

Axe (body wash?) can smell nasty or okay, depending on what you get. I always like minty things, so I get the one that's minty smelling and has exfoliating micro-beads (oops, wrong company... but I used to buy Dove too. Yay, exfoliating). As far as I know, I don't smell like anything after a shower. Axe cologne... I have no idea.

I love both Chuck and the fantastic, Emmy award winning, "Look at Your Man" Old Spice commercial. If you haven't looked up the making of the commercial, you really ought to. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDk9jjdiXJQ) You'll be very surprised (I was) at how everything was done.

And as for Old Spice, Axe, and other highly fragranced products - I'm with the lot of you. Not for me or my man. I get migraines from most fragrances. My boyfriend is accustomed at this point to having me smell his products before he buys them. I had him change deodorant once already because I couldn't handle the smell, and we use unscented products anywhere we can. I heard it once said: the smell of "clean" is nothing, not a spring meadow or lemons or pine.

vote-for1vote-against

So is the Old Spice commercial popular because it makes no sense at all or becasue it's annoying?

vote-for3vote-against

@goldiemcg: C: None of the above!

I like it because it is comical and witty. ;)

If any of you shop at a place that sells flowers and foliage in bulk, for a "found bouquet" type arrangement, try buying an entire bunch of either myrtle or waxflower. Both, at their best, smell lovely.

(Warning - some people may be allergic.)

(You have to give the waxflower a test smell in the store - some of the more tinkered-with varieties now have no scent, as is tragically common with so many commercial flowers: they are genetically tailored for size and for looking fresh after overseas shipping, not for scent.)

(You also might get these at a wholesale florist, if it isn't against vendor policy to sell to someone without an ag license or tax id. Fresher and cheaper, and more of everything.)
