Do you still own a VHS player?
My mother-in-law has boxes full of family videos, but they are all on VHS. I told her to get them converted, but she said she is fine playing them on her VHS player. I was amazed that she still owned one, and wondered how long it will be before they are no longer on the market.
I have one on a shelf in a closet.. "just in case".
Haven't used it in years, but I've still got it. And a few tapes left that I should convert before they deteriorate.
Mine is on a shelf in the basement, along with my DVD player.
I use the DVD drive in my media PC to watch and/or rip DVDs. I have no other way to rip VHS tapes, so the VCR actually gets more use than the DVD player (though it has been months since I used it).
I have two - one's an SVHS deck. Jealous?
Neither is actually plugged in to anything, I just haven't gotten around to throwing them away yet.
I purchased a DVD/VCR combo back in 2005. I still have it, and am kinda/sorta "in the process" of converting some of my VHS tapes to digital...it's been a long process...
@durkzilla: I would have been jealous if you said you had a Beta-Max or Laser-disk player lol
I still have one, it's not connected though. Haven't used it in at least 5 years.
Grandma's broke, so I gave mine to her..... 5 years ago.
Yup we have a DVD/VCR combo in the guest room. I wouldn't toss it since it still works. We also still have some VHS tapes packed away in the basement I'm sure.
I still have one in my bedroom. I use it quite often, as I like to fall asleep watching movies. The lower quality of the format, especially the less dynamic sound, actually helps put me to sleep.
I have a dvr/vhs combo I haven't hooked up in a while. The thing is, my tapes are all Academy Award winners and I hate to part with them. But, I broke down and purchased a little "thingamabob" that translates tapes to discs. I hate to think my tapes are "worthless." However, if I can't transfer them, I might just have to replace them with discs "the normal way." And I think this is probably more than anyone wanted to know... :)
This question brings out the procrastinator in us! I bought a DVD/VHS recorder combo when the TV was new; the TV is about to quit, and I have only converted a few of my kids' tapes to DVD for my grandson.
I have some favorite movies on VHS that will never go to DVD much less Blu-Ray so yes I still a working VHS. Paid 200 for a DVR that stopped working in 6 months. Paid 39 for my VHS 15 years ago and it still works without a hitch.
My parents still have a functioning laser disc player. There's something very satisfying about putting a giant laser disc into the thing.
Have one of those newfangled vcr/dvd combo units ... and about 10 tapes.
Owned, yes. Connected to anything, no. The wife used to tape educational stuff for her classes. Since she "retired" 4 years ago, hasn't been used.
Believe it or not, we use ours quite a bit. We have movies that are only on VHS that I love to show my kids. Hug-a-bunch, Raggedy Ann and Andy's musical adventure and The family Dog are a few. And for me, I love to watch Big Man on Campus with Bob Maloogoloogaloggalogga. Haven't see it? Better order it up on ebay and bust out your VHS player, that movie is Soooo funny!!
Edit: We also own The Ref on VHS for when the family is passing around the only copy on DVD. All's someone has to do is talk about The Ref or quote a line and then we all want to watch it. "Your Husbands not dead lady, He's hiding"
We've got 2. One is in the icky basement and only gets used when we have to hole up in the basement due to weather. The other is a DVD/VHS combo that is in the family room...it gets used a lot. We've got 2 little kids and have a stack of VHS kids movies. It doesn't get used as often as it did before we got Netflix streaming, but probably 3 times a week. Used to get used multiple times a day.
I still have tapes stashed away of me playing hockey as a kid but sadly no way to play them..
I think I'm the first person to answer "no." I don't have one. It went to Goodwill about three years ago and hadn't bee hooked up at all for about three years before that. I do still own about five tapes that I don't have on DVD or Blu-Ray, though I'm not sure why I keep them around.
I have one. It's still hooked up but I haven't used it in years and years. I still have some VHS tapes from work and of picture slideshows from college that I need to get diverted at some point. Just haven't done it yet.
Yes I still own one. Still works perfectly, I still watch VHS tapes in it occasionally (yes that means within the past week). And is still plugged in. It's gonna be worth billions one day. So ha to all those that threw theirs away.
I actually have 2 connected to TVs (one is a VHS/DVD combo).
Just because.
I don't, however, recall having used either for 5 years or so.
I actually bought a new one about a year ago. My old one had finally broken, and I realized if I didn't buy a new one soon, they would probably become very hard to find soon. I actually bought a unit that is a VHS/DVD-burner combo, but I've not yet gotten around to actually copying any old tapes. One of these days, as they say...
Still have two. Newer JVC HQ VCR, and an older combo. With a 3 year old in the house, the old disney movies and other childhood favorites are all too popular at yard sales for less that a dollar, and can be life savers. Even though all are available on Netflix, the 3 year old demands his VHS!
I have a stack, literally, of VHS and DVD players in my garage along with bags of VHS tapes, mostly blanks, some movies. I won't throw them away because they're still good and I ridiculously believe that the VHS players will become antiques one day and be worth something, lol. I watch all my movies off media players now and record tv on DVR so I have no need for them, but I won't give them up and can't give them away, no one wants them.
Nope. Dropped off my last one off to be recycled when I moved in 2008.
I have one and I have the converter thingy with software to convert the tapes. I should do it before the yard sale next weekend.
Yep. Several, in fact. And to go one step further, one is brand new in the box. :)
Panasonic 4-head hi-fi, back when mass consumer electronics made in Japan were still readily available.
Now when was the last time I used any of them ... I can't answer that part.
Our VHS player sits in our little entertainment center along with the blu-ray player, but the VHS doesn't plug into anything. Mostly blocks the cats from being able to snuggle up to the warm DVR and cause it to overheat. Guess it's still good for something!
We have 1 of those rubbermaid totes about half full of VHS tapes. For some reason, i won't get rid of the tape until I've purchased the DVD replacement. Normally I'm a list lover so my original plan was to make a list and dump the tapes, but I just can't do it. There are also a few that are relatively irreplaceable. (the one that pops to mind is 6 hours of all kinds of rare-ish Disney stuff taped from some network station a million years ago - that tape IS my childhood.)
yes, do I know where it is, no (probably in basement somewhere).
I still have one so I can watch "Pass the Ammo". Sadly it will never be released on dvd:(
Not only do I have a VHS player, I have an S-VHS player, and even a Betamax machine that still works (at least last time I used it). Plus a working Laserdisk player.
I also have a couple of boxes full of Betamax tapes. Anyone want them? I gave away boxes of VHS tapes a while a ago.
Yes! I have two. Do you want to buy them? (please?) - I will throw in all my taped Beverly Hill 90210 shows (in Spanish).
I still have two: a thrift store stand-alone VHS player and a combination VHS/DVD unit that's probably close to a decade old. The only VHS tapes that I still have are family videos that I intend to convert at some point. There's also a Betamax player somewhere, probably in the attic next to my Apple IIe and dot matrix printer. :)
@prof256: 'Pass the Ammo' is indeed, an awesome movie.
@prof256 & @budrose: I've never heard of this website, so I can't say whether it's good/bad/otherwise, but you may want to check it out: http://shop.vendio.com/supersounds/item/2021722882/index.html
they appear to have Pass the Ammo on DVD, likely a port from the VHS since you're right, it's not on DVD. Still may be worth it if you finally wanna dump that VCR.
I have one under my TV right now. It isn't hooked up and hasn't been in several years so I have no idea if it even works... I should probably fire it up & spool through my old VHS tapes just to keep them from sticking together or rotting away...
I have a DVD player/VCR combo. The VCR hasn't been used since...IDK.
No, but I need one. A good one.
I have a huuge amount of VHS tapes from when my kids were ... well, kids.
And now their kids are getting old.
I think I have most Disney movies, in those giant plastic boxes, and they are also taking up a lot of space.
I had the VHS shoulder (think Max Headroom) mounted camera. taking pictures of kids in sports, band stuff, family outings, whatever.
I went to convert them to 8mm, but that phase also passed.
I did a few to DVD, but the player died. Along the way, the output sucked.
I have the ION VCR2PC box from a woot sale a while ago, and it gives the word "suck" a whole new meaning. Grainy, blurred, and mono isn't what I wanted.
Summer is here/coming, and I want to get all this to digital, and send it out.
I'm also looking for a reasonably priced video capture card, also. That one I also got from here, and it also sucks. Too.
And we liked "Pass the Ammo", also. Most things Tim Curry.
Yes, we still have a VHS player. A few months ago we went nostalgic and played some of our old home movies. It's crazy to see how much we've changed and not notice these things.
Looking forward to transferring these tapes into digital before it goes bad some day.
I have two VCRs. One I use every day to record shows while I am at work, or if two shows I like are on at the same time at night. I actually bought a used identical model from eBay to have as a spare.
But I just bought a used TiVo with lifetime service this weekend. I bought a really old TiVo 2 yrs ago, but the drive was noisy as heck. I disconnected it after a day and sold it on Craigslist. Hopefully this newer used TiVo has a quieter drive, otherwise it will be sold too.
Since Comcast went digital and required boxes, I cannot record stuff as easily. The box is the tuner now instead of the VCR. That means if no one is home to change the channel, I can only record whatever channel I left the box on. If the TiVo doesn't work out for me, I may build a PC to use as a DVR. I just want a more convenient way to record shows without having to remember what is on a tape, or having to swap tapes. Comcast wants $18/mo for a DVR. Ridiculous.
Yes. I have two. I use them several times a week to record television to watch later. I think I need to buy a couple more, now, before they become unavailable. (I also just watch The Terminator on VHS Saturday night. Somehow I haven't gotten a DVD copy of that yet.)
