Baked beans: with bacon or without?
Of course, this might be a silly question to ask on woot! but do you prefer baked beans with or without bacon? I love the flavor of bacon in my beans, I'm just not sold on the texture. Unless I think of it as just being pork belly, then I'm ok with it. What's your preference and do you have any special things that you like to add in to make it even tastier?
A pretty good option is to make vegetarian beans, and cook a few strips of bacon on the side. Turn the strips into crumbles, and serve separately. Good crunch, bacony flavor, and those who prefer to go baconless (and they do exist) are happy too.
Bacon and Molasses... Slow cooked....
baked beans with no pork but add regular bacon. winner winner bacon for dinner
I grew up in a kosher home. Vegetarian beans only. Please don't make me go back to that.
With bacon, and chopped jalapeno or bell peppers.
This shouldn't even be a question. The more bacon the better. If fact, I agree with @neuropsychosocial, forget the beans I'd rather just have bacon.
With all that's going on in good baked beans, you probably wouldn't even be able to tell the difference between bacon and baconless. Just seems like added fat and salt, at that point.
@jml879: Ah yes, salt pork. Mmmmm. The secret to my mom's awesome spaghetti sauce.
I love bacon in my baked beans, but if I'm short on time or out of bacon, I add liquid smoke. Sometimes I put in chopped jalapenos.
@tcayer: I may or may not be employed by a large privately held company that is dominating the SE region with milkshakes, some of which contain bacon, caramel, cheesecake. College kids swear by it.
Baked beans are one of the staples to use bacon in. I like bacon, but I'm not a fan of this whole "everything's better with bacon" trend that's going on. It's leading the country to ruination! Burger King announces a bacon SUNDAE?! The end of days are here!
Definitely bacon. It goes on everything, including icecream and vodka. Bt not those two together...that would be gross.
Anyone else thinking of Blazing Saddles?
I prefer salt pork in my beans, but when it comes to buying them in a can, bacon will do!
Bacon, mustard seed, and brown sugar are my favorite ingredients. My friend adds a little fresh orange zest to his right before baking and swears by it.
2x the bacon
Everything is better with bacon!
I usually buy Bush's vegetarian if I can't get homemade, they seem to have less 'music' in them.
If I can get homemade, bacon or not really doesn't matter since I don't make them. :)
I like to put cooked bacon on top of the beans so there is a nice crisp coating.
Baked bacon, no beans.
Oh fine, that's not very helpful. :) I believe Boston Baked Beans traditionally includes bacon cooked into the beans in a way that the texture isn't obvious, but the beans are full of porky fatty flavoring bliss.
