I have a talking clock and it warns me five minutes before the alarm goes off. It says, "5 minutes before 4 am." I always get up when it says that so I don't hear the song it plays at 4 am.

I use gentle alarm on my phone with a fairly calm ringtone. It wakes you up over a period of time by fading in. Who wants to be jolted awake?

Right now I have it set on "aviary" so it sounds like a bunch of birds chirping.

Beep...beep....beep...beep. I had to switch to the beeps in lieu of radio because sans 1 hour of sleep I knew I would sleep right through the alarm. Switching back to radio in a couple weeks when my body has adjusted.

If you have ever heard the sound of a Honda with key in, door open, that's the sound. Usually my cat will wake me up before the alarm. No, I don't sleep in my car.

A series of electronic beeps that increase in number and volume as time goes by. I really get stressed from hearing those beeps.

Luckily, as a college student, I have been allowed to wake up naturally most of the time.

usually my kids going Dad, Dad, Dad, time to get up

Since I'm a light sleeper and alarm volume doesn't matter, I try to pick the nicest pre-loaded sound clip I can. I think right now it's something called "chimes", and it started out really nice. It doesn't matter what it is though, I eventually learn to loathe it.

I always wake up to the radio.

beep...beep...beep...beep... I learned the hard way to set my alarm to the most aggravating sound and for an hour earlier than needed. Otherwise I'll just either sleep right through it or get up late.

I have mine set for a radio station which gives traffic, news and weather every hour. So I listen to that for five minutes and then get up and get rolling. It's a restful way to get up and arms me for what route to drive and what to wear.

Radio static. It wakes me up very quickly, but rarely goes off.

Mine plays a local NPR station, because I'm a grumpy old b*ard.

"Woof!" - my dogs waking me for breakfast.

If they're being lazy, my cell plays a Cee Lo Green or Ke$ha song to me.

I have my alarm clock radio set between stations, so I get a BRZAWZZZZSHH really loud. It wakes me up well, and my brain can't tune it out because it's random loud noise.

"Xylophone" from my iPod Touch. I usually wake up a few minutes before my alarm, and I want something pleasant and unalarming so it doesn't wake up the rest of the house.

Wake up? Why? I'm retired. I haven't set my alarm since 8/23/10 - the day my senior manager was told to let me know I could leave.

ALLAHU AHKBAR!
It then detonates.

@rockmasterflex69: I suspect you spend a lot of money on alarm clocks over the course of a year.

definitely require a gentle waking up...I have my phone set to play a soft chime, I get one chance to snooze it, (repeat the soft music), then 2 min later a beep...beep starts happening -- I know it's time to get up then...except for days like today when I just shut both off and went back to bed for 30 min! oops! Stupid DST! I was 10 min late for work...hope the boss doesn't read this :/

The vibration of my phone, typically. Although sometimes it sounds a lot like the dogs next door or garbage trucks.
