Have you done a full-home fumigation ... while owning a pet?
This is "Part 3" of the Guest-Bathroom Remodel Saga; Part 1 here and Part 2 here.
I'll start with the question first: Have you ever done a full-home termite fumigation before? Do you have any pets? Besides ourselves, our cat and foodstuffs, what do we need to remove from the house or bag up? We did a fumigation when I was much younger (over 15 years ago) and we didn't have any pets at the time. Should we keep our cat outside of the house for a few days after we move back in? I'm so afraid of the residual toxins affecting her that I want to air out the house for a few days.
Long story short, we demo'ed the bathroom, found mold and water damage, hired a company to remove the mold and repair the water damaged areas and now we know we have termites.
(cont.)
Behind the water-damaged drywall areas that were exposed, we found mud-tracks behind the garage drywall as well as some completely destroyed studs; these are signs of subterranean termites.
After we called Orkin to come by and look at that, they decided to poke around the rest of the house and found signs of dry-wood termites (completely different species and colony) in 2 or 3 different places along the roof eaves and fascia boards. We have to do a full-home fumigation (circus tent) to get rid of them because there are multiple colonies around the house. Here's the rub; fumigation treats the dry-wood termites, but the subterranean termites need a different treatment, which of course, equals extra $.
A $15,000 bathroom remodel has turned into a $30,000 headache that gets worse and worse.
Anyway, going back to the question, I was wondering what else should we take precautions with in leading up to and after a fumigation. Should we keep the cat away for a few days after we move back?
I definately would keep kitty elsewhere for a few days...but I am an extreme OCD Cat Lover, so I may be a little crazy cat lady overboard about it.
