On page 2 of fresh I'm only getting 8 deals, the other pages have 15 deals

Word. What's up with that? Maybe there's invisible stuff that we mere mortals aren't meant to see. I don't think that there's any specific number of items per page any more, although it used to be ten (back in the More Comments days).
@shrdlu: Its been a problem for a while. It moves across pages, sometimes the first, sometimes the second, but generally the first fresh page is a problem, but it is nothing new. It never bothered me so I never said anything.
@catbertthegreat: Actually, I've seen this before. I think what happens is that the computation for how many things is going to fit in some arbitrary length L1 computes total length L2 of various questions, and is confused in the computation by the very long titles of some of the deals. There may also be hidden computation of L2 that takes into account the actual length of the description (which we may see either from a mouseover, or by selecting the deal).
I looked briefly at page 2, and at this time, the descriptions for many of the items were actually SHORTER than I usually expect. I will now revise how I believe L2 to be computed. I must leave you now, though, since page 2 has an interesting wine deal I must more closely examine (wine.woot has been disappointing of late, although I did just get delivery of the Wellington Vineyard Designate Cabernet Trio (oh frabjous day, calloo callay).
Thanks for noticing this... seems to be an issue related to deals getting removed by moderators/staff. No worries, you're not missing any deals.
@josefresno: Ah, fooey. You mean all the fancy math I was halfway through was for nothing? Now I'll have to find something else.
Seriously, thanks for the update. I'd noticed that same thing, several times, and set it aside as something to remark on when I got a round toit. I guess @bsalusa beat me to it.
@shrdlu: +1 for Jabberwocky
@anotherhiggins: +1 for slithy toves, and -1 for Shrdlu not remembering to provide a close paren to match the opening paren. That puts me back at zero.
Currently I'm seeing fewer deals on fresh. The moderators must have been busy recently.
@bsalusa: Spammers have given up and moved on. The mad xmas rush is almost over. People are busy with their lives. Stuff like that.
@shrdlu: I think that you are right about popular being assigned manually. The camera deal had 9 votes after about 12 hours. It ended with 11 votes. It never became popular. As for the hourly rate of vote accumulation, more time should be allowed for items posted late at night, because of inactivity. By the way I was the second poster by 2 minutes of that item. My post was much more detailed. I took the time to include useful information. I tattled on my post. I guess the staff made a marketing decision.
If there is competition to post some items, sometimes I compete. I may be monitoring these at the right time. I have not normally tried to post the Gold Box. In fact, sometimes I do not care the least about the item. Having watched woot for years, we have learned that some items appeal to wooters. In the long run this site has the potential to be a superior deal site for almost anything.
@bsalusa: I still go back and forth. Popular looks like it's automated on the Question side (I can almost predict when and whether something will move over), but the same mathematcial models are not matching up on the Deals side. It's weird, because during the daytime they do, but as the day gets closer to 4 or 5 PM Central, we start seeing things languish on the Fresh side.
It's interesting.
@shrdlu: The question side may be easier. There seem to be fewer questions than deals by great significance. I still feel that the site fails because they display too few deals on each page. I'm not sure how deep most users will delve into the site. It only helps slightly to have beginning and end buttons. There can be a lot in the middle that will usually be missed especially by casual users. I suspect that few users realize the depth that is presented here. Also, because fresh deals are no longer displayed after a little more than one day, those deals of some significance get dropped at the same time that inconsequential deals should be dropped. Maybe they should have a category of almost popular for those items and display them for a couple of extra days.
@bsalusa: That's actually something I've been thinking about. I'd like to see a thing that says:
24 hours, 0-1 votes == gone
36 hours, 1-2 votes == gone
48 hours, 3-8 votes == gone
Part of the metric for moving from Fresh to Popular has to do with how many votes you get in a period of time (as in, 4 votes in 20 minutes counts far higher than 4 votes in an hour, which is as it should be). There's more, but that's enough to think about for now.
@shrdlu: I would use a reference time of 11PM pacific time, instead of "x" hours. I doubt that any deal except for maybe 1 ounce of gold for $300 would get 4 votes in 20 minutes at 2 or 3 AM. I would allow an exception during a wootoff.
@shrdlu: I got curious so I went to:http://www.alexa.com/ and looked at pageviews/visitor. It was slightly over 2. It appears that very few visitors are going very deep. Activity peaked on Dec. 8.
@bsalusa: I have seen many things get 5 or 6 votes in less than 20 minutes. Some things just have universal appeal (such as screaming monkeys). In addition, I am pointing out something which is a fact, and is just meant to show the weighting, rather than to be some hard and fast rule.
It also makes no sense to go on any clock other than Central, since that's what Woot runs on. Deals is still managed by the same clock, and still has that same internal rhythm.
