I like Any Video Converter. It's free, doesn't leave a watermark and outputs in mp4 that works fine on my Touchpad and Android phone.

I use Handbrake (http://handbrake.fr).

I use it for all of my DVD rips for my media NAS at home, and the files I create from it work on XBMC, my iPhone, and my PS3 with very little configuration needed, if any. In fact, when I download an older anime series that's in avi format and I want it on my iPhone for a trip, I just run it through Handbrake and everything syncs fine.

I use Format Factory which is free
http://www.formatoz.com/

It's easy to use and it can convert pictures, music and videos to basically anything you would ever want

+2 on Handbrake. Free, Open Source and converts just about anything to anything.

@wickedd365: If your trying to stream movies from your PC to your PS3, install VLC player for all the codex your gonna needs, then install PS3media server or Playon. PS3 will recognize it as a media server and you and stream ANY format you want. Hmmmm, unless it happens to be CINAVIA protected. :)

@gthuffines: It's not for my PS3. I use my Xbox. I try to take disk or flash drives to my friends to watch them on his PS3.
I will try handbrake this weekend.

@brays3440: Not sure about the error, but do you have the .Net Framework installed? You can get it from Microsoft, or from FileHippo: (http://www.filehippo.com/download_dotnet_framework_3/)

Keep in mind that each .Net Framework version stands alone by itself; having 4.x doesn't mean a program that requires 3.x will be able to use it. Whatever version the error mentions is the one you need to look for to install.

If you do already have the Framework installed for the .Net version that's giving you an error, I'm not sure where to go from there. Maybe the forums may be able to help?
