@magic cave: We also love the mountains and are lucky to live about 200 miles from Lake Tahoe. We'll be camping here for a couple of days in June:

Vacation sloth...I like it!

Mountains. We vacation once or twice a year in the Eastern Tennessee/Western North Carolina/Northern Georgia part of the world, where we rent a cabin for 10 days or so as far out into the boonies as we can find and then just let the world go along without us for a while. We schedule one or two things to do or places to go, and the rest of the week's plans depend on what we feel like in the morning. Some days it means staying in jammies all day and reading and sleeping; other days it means picking a road we don't recall driving down before and heading out to see where it leads. We're the biggest vacation sloths in the state.

@ohcheri: It's a lovely city, full of beautiful old houses (be sure to check out Battery Row) and lots of fun antique shops. My former mother-in-law, one of the true, original genteel Ladies of the South, used to joke that Charleston was a lot like China: they eat a lot of rice and worship their ancestors. It was the first city I'd been in where you could be in the middle of the city one moment and totally out of the city five minutes later, which is always compelling to me.

@shrdlu: The "trapped" feeling is what makes me less than enthusiastic about the cruise idea...although the all you can eat food sounds perfect! Hell's Canyon reminds me of Yosemite which is new and awe inspiring no matter how many times I see it. And the trail guide looks just like me, except I rarely wear a camisole and chaps at the same time :-)

@ohcheri: Personally, I don't like the trapped in a small world feeling of a cruise.

Glacier Park (in Montana) would be a beautiful choice. It has climbing, and plenty of activity, and is a memorable thing of beauty unlike any other.

You could also visit Hell's Canyon (warning, not for the delicate, faint of heart, or out of shape).

Breathtaking. Work of Art. Just do it. Come on, it'll be fun, and you can say you DID something once you're back.

Love Charleston, SC, and the PA mountains near Raystown Lake/State College.

@armagedon: I definitely like the idea of a vacation that doesn't involve flying. If we took a cruise we would drive to SoCal and avoid the entire airport nightmare.

A cruise is my absolute favorite vacation! Royal Caribbean has it hands down for me. They have everything including a flowrider (on their larger ships, freedom and genesis class) which is a constantly generated wave that you can surf and boogie board on:

Cruises incorporate almost any vacations: beaches, snorkeling, swimming pools, hot tubs, ice skating, zip lines, performances on board, amazing food, etc. There's always a party, buffet, or competition going on.
I don't think it's possible to get a vacation more active than a cruise.
Sorry, I love cruises
