Paypal or Not to Paypal?
Would you rather pay with Paypal, Direct with a Credit card on the Merchants Secure site or another checkout Option, and Why

If my option was just between paypal and credit card, I'd most likely opt for paypal. I've had my card number compromised before, and it seems easier for companies to 'accidently' charge more than you ask for if they have your cc number. However, the only time this happened I was able to put a stop charge on my cc from the company. I also had to get a new card number as a preventive measure.
The only time I got messed up on paypal was through an ebay transaction, the opposite party waited just long enough for the paypal protection period to run out before resolving the dispute.
It is situational.
Paypal/Google Checkout (with the security code card/token) when no other option or sites that check out OK but may be more of the mom/pop type. I always link these to a 2ndary account -- never my main checking account. I transfer funds as needed.
CC [never, never, never debit] for mainstream sites because I've cards that have always sided with me, offer temp CC numbers and I'm risking their money, not mine.
When I'm the one being paid (not too often) I use square or paypal as appropriate when I need to accept CC/debit.
Always check out the merchant. If it's too good to be true, it is. Remember: You can't cheat an honest man.
NEVER use Gpal, Gunpal, etc. or any other off brand payment services.
I had a paypal account (and the attached AmEx card) compromised several years ago, and my AmEx card was again compromised about 2 months ago. AmEx called me within 15 minutes of the suspicious purchase on the second go-round, though.
I still use my credit cards, since I collect reward points, but I use paypal periodically as well.
Most of the large compromise incidents take place four levels down into the handling of the card, though. For funsies, check the following New York Times article http://snurl.com/26pv6f
