I would imagine that some people might try to do that. However, it is dishonest IMO if there is nothing wrong with it to return it. I assume if you plan on doing that, you would buy only the best?

Sadly, there are folks that do indeed do that. It's dishonest, and it's "rentals" like that which means everyone else gets to pay a higher price. :(

Can I buy the returned TVs at an open box discount?

having worked retail for way to long, i can say yes they do.
usually an electronics associate checks 'em out then reboxes and puts back out for sale as new (dishonest too). if they find a little "something" to make it not "new" they then mark that one down as a "display" model (about 10% or $50 whichever is less).

just rent one from a rent-to-own place for a week if you need a big screen for the game. friend of mine does that every year, this year he got 2, and they even delivered them for free.

There are a lot of unethical people in the world, especially the entitled cheapskates. It's unfortunate.

I have to agree with most of the above...even though we love a deal it seems dishonest/unethical to do something like that. It seems to me to be similar to buying an article of clothing for a one-time use, tucking the tags out of sight while wearing it, then returning it because it "didn't fit".
