questionsdoes the leaderboard have mood swings?

"Everybody got mixed feelings
About the function and the form.
Everybody got to elevate from the norm."

vote-for20vote-against

After not being active here for months, I was down to number 582, with a rep of 82. After being fairly active yesterday, I went to number 599, with a rep of 81. Yep, nothings changed here.

@mellielou: You get an automatic rep of 100 for the Rush reference!

vote-for7vote-against

@loubriccant: You'll get there...purple is not your color

vote-for8vote-against

I have experienced similar rating swings. It is amazing how hundredths of a percentage point can dramatically raise/drop your numerical position. Its a tight and friendly competition boys and girls!

vote-for7vote-against

It's always been sporadic for me. I vote on questions and deals at least once a day and try to set solid time aside at least every other day to add deals/tattle/comment/question/answer. Usually, this keeps me in the top 100 and sometimes I'm lucky enough to hang out the on the leaderboard for a little while :)

vote-for42vote-against

Because everybody has reputation, your "leaps or falls" are not only because of your actions, but also the people around you. Moving on. :)

vote-for7vote-against

I read the question and instantly started typing a whole long drawn out explanation of why there could be fluctuation even if your activity hasn't changed.

Just before I posted I saw @studerc's post, which is significantly shorter than what I had just typed, and was far more clear. +1 for @studerc

The rating system rates you against other users.

vote-for5vote-against

Like @bogie21 I also typed a much longer explanation than @studerc...

My summary: worrying about your rank instead of your rating (rep) is a way to give yourself something to whine about, nothing more.

vote-for8vote-against

Gotta say, and definitely, I am NOT whining. As a loyal member of this community for many years and a daily contributor (although not a stellar one for sure) the elevation to more and more popularity of some who so clearly do not even have a clue of who is whom (Jumbo vs Bot), history of what made this place great at one time, decent use of grammar and being able to make their thoughts clear and understandable, inability to ask questions that have any meaning whatsoever and subsequent upvotes of those very same questions - mindless stuff - has made the site incredibly juvenile bordering ignorant in many cases. I do not consider that to be someting I personally want to compete in any way with. I am here to just be myself and when I am kicked down to white, I will probably be too old to type!

vote-for11vote-against

You're so vain
You probably think this ranking's about you
You're so vain
I'll bet you think this ranking's about you
Don't you? Don't you?

vote-for6vote-against

My rating went WAY up during Christmas "break", and I figured it was due to all the "kids" being home from college and/or people being off work and not online as much. But I was surprised when my rating kept going up in the past week - finally reaching #2 for a day. Yes, #2 - I was shocked! And then suddenly, I was #52. Overnight. More where I probably should be, but now that I've tasted the top, I want it back ;)

vote-for7vote-against

@bogie21: I appreciate the +1! I actually did the same thing. I wrote out this long drawn out explanation and as I read through all of it all I could think to myself was, "wow this makes no sense." (Sort like reputation in the first place :) ) Short, sweet, and to the point.

vote-for7vote-against

Well my reputation dropped 20 places since this morning and my behaviors have not changed from any other day. I have long ago abandoned trying to figure out the algorithm.
I log onto the site in the morning and contribute through-out the day. Where I end up, I end up. On occasion I am pleasantly surprised to find myself in or near the top ten on the leaderboard.

vote-for8vote-against

@studerc Yes, I agree entirely. I have tried since the day I joined to understand this whole "reputation" thing. Now all I do is find good deals, post them, and see what magical actions the leaderboard suggests for me today.

"Why would a Wookiee, an 8-foot-tall Wookiee, want to live on Endor, with a bunch of 2-foot-tall Ewoks? That does not make sense! But more important, you have to ask yourself: What does this have to do with this case? Nothing. Ladies and gentlemen, it has nothing to do with this case! It does not make sense! Look at me. I'm a lawyer defending a major record company, and I'm talkin' about Chewbacca! Does that make sense? Ladies and gentlemen, I am not making any sense! None of this makes sense! And so you have to remember, when you're in that jury room deliberatin' and conjugatin' the Emancipation Proclamation, does it make sense? No! Ladies and gentlemen of this supposed jury, it does not make sense! If Chewbacca lives on Endor, you must acquit! The defense rests"

vote-for5vote-against

I thnk it just did, I went from 128 to 80th.

vote-for4vote-against

@the18thtee84: I couldn't quite place where I was remembering that quote from..... with the help of google it all has become so clear. South Park, NICE!

vote-for6vote-against

@klozitshoper: +1 for you. I always enjoy reading your comments, keep up the good work!

vote-for4vote-against

@klozitshoper:

First, I hope that you did not take my comment about whining personally. If you did, I apologize. Know for a fact that I do not view you as a whiner.

What makes this whole thing silly is that none of us really knows how rep is calculated.

But one point that always comes to mind when people state "I haven't changed what I'm doing and my rep has changed" is this:

User A's rep is not determined by what user A does, but rather by the way that all of the other users react to what user A has done. Since user A cannot control or even know what all of the others users are doing, it is futile for user A to worry about it.

So it really does boil down to doing what you do.

vote-for5vote-against

@klozitshoper: Having asked the bot-jumbo question I feel that's a direct knock at me. No it wasn't serious, but it's my observation that the tongue-and-cheek silliness fits the mood here rather well.

I'm having trouble discerning how that deserves such ill vibes in my direction.

vote-for4vote-against

@axphw1: It was a really, really stupid question in my opinion and demonstrated your immaturity and lack of real knowledge how things work around here. The fact that it was upvoted so much demonstrates how out of touch I am with other people here. So, moving on - you be you and I will be me.

vote-for3vote-against

@baqui63: No, I was not taking it that you thought I was a whiner! Reputation aside, the quality and/or lack of it in the questions of late hit my very last nerve on the subject. I care not what my rep is, but I can and do call it as I see it. Thanks for your consideration of my feelings, although in this case, there is no problem whatsoever.

vote-for3vote-against

@klozitshoper: You and I are evidently out of touch with the majority; I can deal with that.

My leaderboard tip says I should vote for better questions. It does not, alas, tell my how to find them.

vote-for3vote-against

@lavikinga: A new diagnosis - code? I shall have to remember it - IWS. Unfortunately, it could also mean in my own brain Intercoastal Waterway System where I live. Hope to keep it straight!!

vote-for3vote-against

@magic cave: Aha - better questions like beauty lie in the eye of the beholder - and the beholder is the un-understandable "system" or algorithm, or whatever else it is called.

vote-for5vote-against

@mellielou: Rush quote, NICE

"Unstable condition, A symptom of life, Of mental and environmental change. Atmosphereic disturbance, The feverish flux..."

So appropriate!

@loubriccant: Purple & Black, right?

vote-for2vote-against

@klozitshoper: I've been around long enough to surmise that this crowd (present audience excluded) is typically above name calling & personal attacks.

The Internet is a big place; if we're not meeting your lofty standards of intelligence and maturity, perhaps there's a a better place for you to go where your peers won't be so disappointing.

vote-for2vote-against

yes. i posted a few deals and my reputation went both up and down within 24 hours of posting, and i didn't have any negative votes to cause the downswing... weird.

vote-for3vote-against

@rlapid2112: Yes! If I can get the point were my triangle flips back and forth between purple and black by game time on Saturday, I'll be a happy man.
Of course, that'll probably mean I'll have to ask a few stupid questions.

vote-for2vote-against

@rlapid2112: ding ding ding!!! You got it!! Coincidentally, that song has been stuck in my head the past 2 days. I'm glad I could use the lyrics for something.
