So this is how all of those tour de france bikers do it! CHEATERS!

vote-for8vote-against

was listed for $549.99 plus free shipping at 1:01am on the main page. i add it to my cart & the price jumped up $210. Less than 5 minutes after seeing the price and 8 hours after it was posted?

at the original $549 this would be a good woot sponsor deal.

at the now listed $759 it is $9 more expensive than just buying from Walmart for $750 with free shipping to store(plus free return price if defective).

Error now or before on the price? Missing a discount code?

vote-for2vote-against

This isn't a bad deal for a bike with a lithium ion battery pack. The motor, however, is only 250 watts, so don't think the bike will do most of the work for you - it will just help out.

vote-for1vote-against

an electric bike, what's next electric shoes ?

vote-for2vote-against

Use the cash and buy a real road bike.

vote-for1vote-against

250 watts is more than anyone who would buy a bike like this could put out for any amount of time. That's most of the work if it is putting out a constant 250 watts, spend half the money, get a nicer bike and some exersice.

vote-for1vote-against

It's back to $549 but now the deal itself says $759.. Someone is confused...

vote-for2vote-against

I looked into one of the bikes many years ago. I rode to work but the hills were a deal killer for me. I looked into one of them for hill assistance. How well do they handle being left outside in the rain?

vote-for2vote-against

@gopvifootball: Goodmorning, Deal.Wooters! The price has gone a bit funky overnight, but is indeed $549. Working on getting it squared away now!

vote-for2vote-against

@trissecondipity: Changed back to lower price.

vote-for9vote-against

@a992156: It depends what you want. I've been commuting by bike for twelve years, 38,000 miles and I'm almost 60. The hills and headwinds are no longer challenges, they're annoying and make riding less enjoyable. I'm not out for a joy ride on a road bike, I'm commuting in the middle of Manhattan. I need to see where I am and where cars are, so I need a more upright position.

I bought a Trek Valencia+ last year for around $2400. It's sitting in my office with me now. It's only pedal assist, no throttle, and mostly I leave it off. But for the Williamsburg or Queensboro Bridge, or those 20mph headwinds, it's great. My knees don't hurt anymore, and I bike more often than ever.

So I just bought one of these for my Significant Other, who is a bit old for a road bike too.

vote-for1vote-against

Where's the motor on that thing? On the other side of the pic on the rear hub?

vote-for1vote-against

@kargo27: I've updated our blog with another pic :) http://blog.secondipity.com/2011/03/17/happy-st-patricks-day/

The battery is the middle thumbnail image on the right - it's removable, so you can take it inside with you to charge, etc. Let me know if you have any other questions!

vote-for1vote-against

@kargo27: http://www.currietech.com/images/zoomin/ecoride_big.jpg

The motor appears to be on the other side of the drivetrain, that silverish disk that doesn't normally appear on a bike.

vote-for1vote-against

@trissecondipity: The user can select between "Pedal Assist" and "Twist and Go" at any time?

vote-for5vote-against

Do they have these in a stationary bike model?
That way we could plop it in front of the TV and let it exercise for me while I watch "The Biggest Loser" and eat a bowl of ice cream.

vote-for1vote-against

In for one. After shopping for a couple of years, this is a universally well reviewed bike with a better battery and aluminum frame for about half-price... a no-brainer for me.

vote-for1vote-against

@dgk: I pulled this from the Currie website - gives a bit more detail about the pedal assist...

http://www.currietech.com/pdf/ecoride_tagpas_m.pdf

vote-for1vote-against

triss: - Im very interested how hard is this to assemble? also where do these ship from?

vote-for1vote-against

Would this bike be big enough for someone who is 6ft+? The assist won't help me much if my knees come up to my shoulders.

vote-for1vote-against

@gooddeals18: The bikes are located in several warehouses across the country and you should receive it in under a week

As for the assembly, you can check out the instructions here: http://www.currietech.com/pdf/RTMB%20Assembly%20Guide_lowres.pdf

It says it should take between 1-2 hours :)

vote-for1vote-against

@trissecondipity What happens if you pedal beyond the 15 mph top speed from the specs? Does the motor keep assisting?

Could you also confirm which rear cassette comes on the bike? It appears to be a Shimano Tourney MF-TZ31 (14-16-18-20-22-24-34T) and the 44T front chain-ring would mean a speed of 21.6 mph pedaling at 90 rpm. Thanks.

vote-for1vote-against

@kytkattin: Saddle Max height is 36" and the weight limit is 240 lbs

vote-for2vote-against

I'd think a true pedal bike would be more of an "EcoRide"...

vote-for1vote-against

54 lbs????

You gotta be kidding. That's 20 lbs heavier than my mountain bike.

vote-for1vote-against

hmm Wonder if the Amish would consider this Cheating LOL

vote-for1vote-against

@coyhaven: Well yeah!...they'd have to use technology to charge it.

vote-for1vote-against

Most of them around here use solar power to have electricity and have house lights -and some use it for heating systems too although wood is still the most popular. You see solar panels on almost every Amish house around here.

Tha Amish can also drive cars as long as they do not own them(they have to be black and leased),most now also have cell phones with solar chargers because you dont have to be on grid(know where you are by the government) to have a phone. Most busnisses here are also alowed a electric cash register-

I could see the kids buying these to use to get up our hills around here (most work for other people)the poor horses look about shot after hauling a buggy here on our hills

This is the Amish around here there are strickter sects farther into Ohio it all depends on the Elders that run them what the real rules are for the area

vote-for3vote-against

@mwarrenus: Okay, so not only did you stump me, but you stumped the tech support at Currie :)

The answers I've found:

1) They've never been asked this question before, but the woman I spoke with said she's pedaled over the 15mph on the Currie Urban Cruiser and still had pedal assistance. Her "pretty sure" answer was that it still assists.
2) The model # Currie gave me for the Shimano was RD-M310-S

vote-for1vote-against

@goldiemcg: Again, it depends. If you use it instead of driving, it's very good for the environment. If you're 25 and can bike everywhere, good for you, though you probably don't Goldie. If you're older or have some physical problem, then an assist bike is a nice thing to have and is better than driving.

vote-for1vote-against

@dgk: Not sure what the "again" was for but I'll reply...My point was that a traditional bike is more "eco" than an electric bike. I didn't say anything about it being compared to a car nor an age situation.

vote-for1vote-against

this is for the lazy eco. For the real Eco, U should go completely green..... as in walking.

vote-for1vote-against

wouldnt it be simpler if anyone could just say: at an average speed of _ the battery will last for_ ?

vote-for1vote-against

@dgk: WHOA! Nice bike! Just looked it up. I'd say it's perfect for the needs you described. Much quieter than that noisy thing posted here. And a much better status display.

vote-for1vote-against

Hey Deal.Wooters - heading out of the office soon, but can be reached at tdreppert@gmail.com if anyone has any questions later tonight!

Happy St. Patty's Day! :)

vote-for2vote-against

@ttm77: I'm so green, I just sit in a field, sucking my thumb and checking woot! on a computer I built out of beaver dung.

vote-for0vote-against

check at your local walmart and save a hundred or more dollars and also they have a bike department that can assemble it.
it's around four hunred on walmart.com

vote-for1vote-against

I wrote the company & this is the email I got back:

Thank you for contacting Secondipity,

Hello,

Yes, it was entering the wrong price in the checkout. The correct price is $549.99. Did you place the order? If so, we can make the adjustment, please provide your order number.

Regards,
Secondipity

@coonstev: Dang... Your mountain bike is 34 pounds?!?!?! That's heavy... My 29er is only 18 pounds total...

@captgoldfish: Actually 250 watts isn't a lot of power on a bike at all.

vote-for1vote-against

can this bike be used throttle only, no pedaling, or is some pedaling needed. How much more for the 450 watt version if it's available.

vote-for1vote-against

If worried for the battery, keep in mind there's a lot you can do when your battery is failing and secondary battery is dead:

vote-for1vote-against

@goldiemcg: The "again" referred to my earlier post on why someone would consider buying this bike. It is probably less green to eat some animal so you have the pedal power than to charge this off solar panels, but I'll admit to not having solar panels and eating at Taco Bell. Actually I hear they don't use real beef so maybe that's ok.

Still, anyone considering buying this bike is aware that it is both more expensive than many non-e bikes and uses some power. I assure you that they are considering using this as opposed to using a car. If they thought that they could use, say a Trek 7100 Hybrid (around $400), they would probably be getting that.

vote-for1vote-against

Bike arrived yesterday, took less than an hour to put together. Seems solid and no real QA problems except the tube isn't in quite correctly on the rear wheel so the valve comes out at an angle. I haven't had a chance to ride it yet but did twist the throttle and had it jump across the living room. When it stops raining one of these days I'll take it out for a spin.

vote-for1vote-against

@dgk: Great to hear -- hope the sun comes out soon! :)
