Haven't tasted it, but for $10 it's a good project this summer with the kids. Thanks OP!

i am sooooo getting this. Cold root beer floats on a nice warm summer day is so sweet

Anyone know if you can use these bottles with the Mr. Beer kits too?

I've used BOTH the Mr Beer Kit and this kit. The bottles are the same as the Mr. Beer 1 liter bottles, but the caps have a hole in them with a rubber gasket for pressure relief. I doubt you could use those caps with beer. Plus, once you've made root geer in them, they're kind of tainted with the smell of root beer. (That didn't stop me from using them, though...) I actually have a double batch of beer that needs bottling right now!

Does anyone know if the items that get used up in the process are replaceble? Otherwise I'd think you'd have $10 worth of useless stuff when they are consumed.

Nevermind. Refill pack is $10 on their website.
must remember to google before asking.

Considering this includes the bottles, this is a fantastic deal. Heck, it's great even if you just use the bottles and the keg for another batch of beer. Mr. Beer stuff's pretty good.

Purchased. It looks like a fun activity to do with the kiddo. Standard shipping was only $3.99 for me..not sure if that is a flat rate or not.

I still haven't used the one I bought from woot. I think woot's price was similar, but you had to pay shipping.

Why does root beer need yeast O_o, the crap they are makn is neither root nor beer :/ . *in the past mayyybe but now... no its nothing

@dan1668: I think yeast is what gives it carbonation. The yeast feeds on some of the sugar, and the bi-product is carbon dioxide gas. When carbon dioxide is pressurized in the bottle with the liquid, it diffuses into the liquid and becomes carbonic acid. This is what we call carbonation. But I'm not really sure. Could be for some other reason.

We have a winner!
It is for carbonation. Unless you have someway to pressurize with CO2, than it's done the old fashioned way.

According to the manufacturer's website, "Alcohol Content: Due to this carbonation process your root beer will contain trace amounts of alcohol (about half of 1% ABV)." This may be an issue if it's something you plan to do with the kids.

Anyways, does anyone know if these come with the "keg" shaped fermenting vessel like the Mr. Beer kits do? From what I can tell, this does not include anything like that.

Using the yeast to carbonate will result in small amounts of alcohol, it is essentially the same process as with making beer, however the pressure that builds up in the bottle kills the yeast very quickly so it doesn't generate much alcohol.

@douglasbarbin, I would say it doesn't come with the 'keg' fermenting vessel because it won't be fermented. The carbonation process is done in bottle.

I have made rootbeer several times, never using this kit, but it tastes great! You can get a bottle of extract (for 4 gallons of rootbeer) at any store that carries homebrew supplies, or online. I like to use mostly brown sugar instead of white, it gives it a stronger flavor. I have had much more luck doing in bottle carbonation than using my kegging system. Just don't use glass bottles, unless you like waking up at 3am to shotgun blasts in your closet and cleaning up glass and rootbeer from your ceiling.

For $10 im in for one. Even if the RB is bad its something fun to do with the kids.

that's cheaper than the bottle kit....
I love my mr beer keg, fits just right, and makes good beer!

Anyone else order this and still have a "Not Yet Shipped" status? This is ridiculous how long it's taking. Good thing it's not something I really needed ASAP :-)

vote-for1vote-against

Got my "shipped" notification just now. REAL long to wait for something that was "in stock" I completely forgot I even ordered it!

vote-for1vote-against

Yeah got mine too, and it will have taken less than 3 days once it was actually shipped -- that's madness!

But looking at Target's page now it does say out of stock. I guess we took em all!
