I've been following mowers for about a month or so and this is the cheapest 22" self-propelled that I have come across. Not to mention it is a Craftsman with a Honda motor. I've had much success with the Honda motor versus the Briggs and Stratton motors of the past.

It has a Honda motor people. Those are awesome engines!
@biggestmexi: Yeah. I owned a Craftsman mower back in the late 80's with a Honda motor. It lasted for 12 years!!! It was finally the wheel spindles that quit on that machine but the motor was still going strong. In comparison I now have a Craftsman mower that is 5 years old with a Briggs and Stratton motor and I have a hard time getting it started and keeping it running. Never again!
Damn I live in an apartment and Im still tempted.
I own this & it's good, but alot of the body parts & wheel assebly parts are really lightweight/cheap. I expect the motor to outlast it easily
Yeah, I have a similar model. The engine cranks on the first or second pull...but I've replaced all of the wheels at least once and they are ~$14/each. Just be sure to change the oil, air filter, and spark plug once a season, or every other season - it's not hard!
FYI -This is the plastic Honda motor. The C in GC means consumer grade. The X in GX means commercial grade.
Craftsman is so-so. Go to a local power equipment shop.... they get the better machines (chain stores dumb-down some features to cut cost) and it's probably an equal or better price. Check out Toro and Husqvarna machines also, I think they are better brands by-far.
@greengolf: what exactly does that mean? Plastic motor....
Engine specs on sears.com,
Motor-Engine:
Engine Brand: Honda
Engine Lubrication System: Splash
Engine Series: OHC
Engine Size (cc): 160
Housing Material: All Metal
Overhead Cam: Yes
Starter Type: Pull Start
Engine information from HONDA. I can find nothing about plastic....
Bought the same one for 205 last week at Sears in Arlington, TX
In my opinion, Honda makes the best small engines. I have one on my mower and went out of my way to spend more for it. Well worth it.
@l925: funny that you recommend Toro and Husqvarna. Guess what brand engine both of them use on some models? Yup, Honda. In fact, both have models with this same engine.
I don't know why there is so much dislike for Briggs and Stratton engines. I've had my Lawnboy with a Briggs and Stratton engine for 4 years - no prime or choking and starts on first or second pull. Even after sitting all winter.

If I didn't have this... I would definitely grab up this deal.
@justinshrop: I wish I had a similar success story. I have to pull the cord at least 8 times after priming at least 8 times. I also have noticed that it is very sensitive to old/stale fuel. I don't have a very large yard and only mow once a week. If I purchase 1 gallon of gas at the beginning of the season by mid June, the mower just doesn't like the gas. It sputters, stalls, runs not so great. If I buy new gas it works better but not GREAT.
I know you are all gonna say, well just buy gas more frequently and you have a mower that works just fine Well that is just a PITA. I have a hard enough time making time to cut the lawn let alone having to run out and get gas every other week...
@bige2401: Was it on special last week? Same model?
Gas prices increasing, I opted to get an electric mower.I am very happy with my purchase.
Justinshrop: Add some fuel stablilizer to youy gas can. My gas stays usable all summer with a single 2-gallon purchase in the spring.
Have had 5-6 mowers over the years with B&S or Tecumseh engines and have never had the engine fail on any of them. The mower falls apart long before the engine does. I now have the top Honda walk behind and it's held together well for more than 8 years but I paid 3x what this craftsman costs. This Craftsman looks like a good deal if you don't expect it to last 10 years.
just moved into a new house earlier this year, former owner left their mower, but it's a piece of junk. i think i will pull the trigger on this deal, seems to be that most comparable self-propelled mowers are at least 300. only downside seems to be single-speed, but that's not a deal breaker for me.
@jimmyd103: stabil and a carb-cleaning.
@djrussell: Do they sell a carb cleaner, something I can simply add to the fuel or do I have to take the carburetor apart?
@jimmyd103: You shouldn't need to pull the carb apart unless you've really neglected the engine. Typically, just pull the air filter off, start it, and squirt carb cleaner in short bursts into the hole under the filter - which is the carb throat (if you use too much, it will kill the motor- just short bursts so that the motor slows down a bit then comes back up to speed).
+1 on Stabil or Sea Foam in the fuel, too.
Just bought one, needed to replace my Yard Machine anyway so couldn't think of a better reason
The limit on this is the quality of the deck / parts surrounding the Hodna motor. I've got a Troy Bilt with Honda mower and have had it for 9 years and the only thing that's broken on it is the cables and a couple wheels. Motor is still going strong and doesn't use any oil even though I don't change it every year. If you move up to a Honda branded mower get the Xenoy deck (not steel) as it will never rust and should last as long as the motor.
Very nice deal...
I would get it if I had not just purchased the last TWO very similar mowers (last year model) from the local SEARS here with KEY start for:
$255.15 each out the door.
It says front drive... Wouldn't a rear wheel drive be more helpful?
(I believe my current mower is also front wheel...)
Couldn't get the coupon code to work. Says it doesn't apply to this item.
Every machine I own has either a Honda motor or a Kawasaki and I love the fact that the Honda's start every time all the time! I might buy one for my sister. this does not compare to a Honda mower but would be great for residential use on a small lot
Coupon works for me, but it's not changing to $274.99 in the cart when added, so still ending up at $279.99 instead of $254.99.
This coupon worked for me yesterday afternoon. When I went to order one last night the coupon did not work. Spent 45 minutes complaining with phone rep. and eventually got the discount. It looks like Sears did not mean to have the $25 off $250 and the $20 off $200 apply to the same purchase. Website currently only allows the $20 discount.
Just bought one using my sears/ kmart "shopyourway" rewards card, took off 10%.. then used the SAVE20 code making my subtotal before tax $251.99.. Total in Paducah, Ky $267.11... not bad.
