Samsung 1080p HD Camcorder for $49.99 + $5.00 shipping
I’m putting this camcorder’s dust-proofness to the test
Is it better than the similarly priced CAMILEO sold not long ago here on this very internet website?
@sdc100: Since this camcorder has the video record pause feature, sdc100 will like this one.
"Record Pause allows you to briefly pause the recording and then pick up right where you left off without creating a new file"
Is this good for a car dash cam?
I can't seem to find any specs on the battery life and recording time--anyone have a link with this info?
This looks pretty nice to me for the $$. I have a Vado which I like a lot,it was cheap about $35 and takes very good videos but no still shots, not waterproof and 2x digital so this looks like a step up from the Vado. The Samsung reviews look good for the most part on Amazon and the extended warranty for ST is inexpensive. I will check back in a few to see if there are any posts from Wooters who have one to see their comments. This would be fun to take a few videos at the 4th of July pool party and pretend that you dropped the camera in the water by accident.
How does this do recording inside and in low light?
Very good deal. Usually $100-$115 at Amazon. I just did a lot of reserch comparing this and the Kodak PLay Sport ZX5. They are the best two options for ruggged pocket cams right now or any pocket cam really.
The audio recording quality on the Samsung W200 is far superior to the ZX5 it picks up more and is clearer with less hissing. The W200 will also do better in low light depending on what you like, the color of your subject will be a little off but they will be well lit.
Where the Samsung W200 falls short is it's FPS capabilities. For some reason it will only record a max of 30 FPS whether you are shooting 1080p or 720p. This means fast moving subjects may be blurry. The Kodak Zx5 offers 60FPS at 720p.
The ZX5 records to a SD card, the Samsung w200 records to a Micro SD... neither provide one in the box.

What did I end up buying? Well I was never satisfied enough with either. I needed 60FPS because I have keeps but the ZX5 audio was just too crappy. But you have to remember I was looking at spending a lot more that $50. At this price the W200 is a bargain!
I ended up getting a Sony Cyber Shot HX9V on clearance from Sony, it's a point and shoot that does amazing video and can record at 1080p 60fps and has great stereo audio recording.
It's not water/shock/dust proof but I guess I'll have to be careful.
Hope all that helps!
Sorry if I missed it somewhere, but what does 30fps mean?
@komtstate: fps=frames per second
@zomigi: It records just fine inside, however, I have not had a chance to shoot in low light. The quality is great and the underwater feature is amazing. Overall this is a great camera, and this price is fantastic.
how does this compare to a flip?
@kyle: Other site reviews say battery life is about 2 hours of continuous shooting and a little over 15 minutes recording per 2 gigs of memory. Also say maximum file size is about 20 minutes of continuous recording, then starts another file. Can pause and resume recording into same file, subject to limits stated before.
@expertune: When using this or another brand as a dashcam what do people use as a mount?
I'm not sure this should be advertised as sand-proof. I own one, and seem to recall the owner's manual stating that sand can get into the camera through the microphone and even the spaces around the controls on the back.
Anyone got a link to the manual to verify?
@jasongb: manual can be found here. You must register/log in - but I have had no problems...
This thing is amazing totally worth 50$ I bought one last September the day before my wedding thinking it would be cool to get some candid videos and use the waterproof functions for the honeymoon in Jamaica. What we ended up with was a full chronicle of both in high def. The waterproof function works great I used it for a 30 min snorkeling video and it held up like a champ. I also took it with me down the 4 story slide at Margaritaville in Jamaica. Id have to say though one of the best features is the face that it takes micro SD cards. Yes I know you have to buy them extra since there is no built in memory but they are cheap and if you have a few of them you dont have to worry about rushing to the computer and uploading when you run out of room. Plus you can just keep them as a permanent backup. One last note the video out function with a Hdmi cable to TV works very well too and the video quality holds up due to the HD quality video. HIGHLY RECOMENDED!
Does anybody know what Class Micro-SDHC card this works with? I know that optimally I should use Class 10 or 6 for video but I have a bunch of extra Class 4's around and I'm wondering if they would work okay.
Does anyone know if you dont have a computer USB to use to charge this...can you use a wall usb charger? Also, is the cord for chargin included?
This looks like a good camera, and I'd probably pull the trigger if it had a jack to connect an external microphone. I just started a thread in "questions" about this very thing, but I thought I'd ask if anyone here has any recommendations.
Feel free to respond over here to avoid thread-rot:

Anyone know if not having optical zoom is a huge downside?
Thinking about this for a mothers day present
Also, anybody have the Kodak PlaySport Zx3? I'm debating, the sony one has a lower pricetag, so any suggestions?
@moiesprout: Digital zooms are pretty worthless. You are better off not zooming and using an editing program to enlarge and crop. The effect is much the same. Not sure how well this would work with movies, but is true with stills.
At least as important is the quality of the lens optics. They must be pretty good to get the good reviews I've seen from professional reviewers.
I plan to use this as backup or carry-around and not my primary camera.
i bought 1
@eyelovekazoo: I have this model and charge it all the time with a wall USB charger. Also, there is no cord for charging which can be a pain. I bought a USB extension cable that I plug mine into which is far better than trying to directly plug it into the computer.
By the way, it takes good video also.
I own a Mac. Will I have any difficulty importing video and using it with iMovie?
Video sample of a kid swimming underwater.
Before I pull the trigger I assume the battery is consumer replaceable, anyone know for sure?
THe new Sony tough cam is the best currently. BUT these are great all things considered. If you just want a cheap camcorder for the outdoors this is just fine, but dont trust the waterproofing. I work at a big box store and we get these types of cameras back all the time with water damage
I just received mine (looks good). Only three days after I ordered! I believe that is the fastest shipping I have ever gotten from Woot!
Got mine too! Unfortunately, I don't have the memory card it uses. I figured it came with one...NOPE!
@kggoodman: I don't suppose yours had a card, did it? Whats the largest GB it will accept?
@bluebusa: No card, but I wasn't expecting one. I put a 32GB Class 4 in and it seems to be working fine. I thought I would need a minimum of Class 6 but so far, so good. The camera feels nice and solid.
@kggoodman: thanks , i was about to ask if it work fine on class4. I was thinking it will need only 6 or 10 class
I didn't realize this was a refurb. I've not bought anything refurbished, so I guess we'll see how that goes.
The flip out usb charger is ok; while it's cool to have it built in, it doesn't come out far enough from the device for me to plug into my pc, where the ports are inset... no idea how it will perform as I am unable to charge for the time being!
This worked (sort of) for about 30 minutes (no exposure to dust or water) and then refused to turn on at all, unless plugged into a usb charger. As soon as it went into video mode, the screen faded and died, and the unit shut down. Reset button did nothing. Unit totally bricked in under and hour. This piece of garbage now resides in my trash bin, where it belongs.
Also, despite listing a microSD as an optional accessory, this unit has no built-in memory, rendering the unit entirely useless without one...so I guess your other "option" is to look at the picture on the screen, without being able to record images or stills for the 30 minutes the unit will function before it bricks. I'll never buy another Samsung product again, and will spend the extra on a GoPro HD, a camera of proven quality, reliability, durability, and lifespan above an hour.
@allrushmixtape: Truthfully? Then you probably only use a MacBook and only drink Starbucks. If you honestly tossed it in the garbabe, which I highly doubt, I'll gladly pay the postage to have it mailed to me. This is my third, fourth and fifth one in the family and was a little disappointed when I could only order 3 this time! Please send it to me, I'll gladly accept it in to my fold.
Signed,
A PC user and non-coffee drinker.
@bluebusa: Wrong. Linux user for over a decade, and I make my coffee at home. Don't believe I tossed it? Here's what you'd be getting shipped:
Still interested?
@allrushmixtape: while that picture made me laugh, I don't think you can take advantage of the 90 day warranty at this point!
Mine wasn't waterproof :( First time using it, I took it in the water and the screen went blank... never to come back again. After it had dried thoroughly on the outside, I opened up the USB cover and the SD card cover and water came out. I thought it was supposed to seal water out, not in...
