Crab Nebula Poster for $11.20 ~ $22.45
All Glory to the Crab Nebula!
A Giant Mosaic
A Giant Mosaic (Will print all the way upto 52" x 52"!) This mosaic image, one of the largest ever taken by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope of the Crab Nebula, is a six-light-year-wide expanding remnant of a star's supernova explosion. Japanese and Chinese astronomers witnessed this violent event nearly 1,000 years ago in 1054, as did, almost certainly, Native Americans. The orange filaments are the tattered remains of the star and consist mostly of hydrogen. The rapidly spinning neutron star embedded in the center of the nebula is the dynamo powering the nebula's eerie interior bluish glow. The blue light comes from electrons whirling at nearly the speed of light around magnetic field lines from the neutron star. The neutron star, the crushed ultra-dense core of the exploded star, like a lighthouse, ejects twin beams of radiation that appear to pulse 30 times a second due to the neutron star's rotation...

Where's The Doctor when I need him?
edit: suddenly I'm reminded of pirate radio!
It's full of stars!
@shrdlu: And crabs? Or just crabby people?...
Or is it one of them fancy tricks, and really there aren't any crabby people? Just what I'd want - to travel light years to get to the crab nebula, only to find out that there aren't even any crabby people there; what a bummer!!!
I really hope @crabnebula created an account just to post this deal (according to the info I get from hovering my mouse over the white triangle, Mr. Crab joined today). Epic. Epic indeed.
you can download this and many other images in HQ from the Hubble site.
@markguns: Woohoo! Crabs in Hi Quality! :) And honestly, I do like so many of the NASA images.
This is a third-party seller...http://www.zazzle.com/sell
Is she allowed to do this? You know, take it off NASA and sell it off as her own?
@ebobo: Yeah, it's allowed by Hubble. HubbleSite.org even recommends it as one option for printing:
http://hubblesite.org/gallery/printshop/step3.php#online_photolab
"Online photolabs take your digital pictures and mail you a printed copy for a fee. We can't recommend any company over another, so if you're at a loss, use an Internet search engine to find one.
Follow the company's directions to upload the image you saved in Step 2. Make sure that the photo size you request from the company matches the photo size (4x6, 5x7, 8x10 or 16x20) you chose in Step 2."
However, imprinting ZAZZLE in the web image is pretty lame. Perhaps they didn't intend it, but that coupled with their failure to link to hubblesite.org may mislead people. They should seriously consider rectifying that in the future.
I don't know about the rules on Zazzle, though.
What I don't get is...those look like every day prices, how is this a deal?
And yes, you can do this. I have about 20 hubble images on zazzle as well. They are public domain. From the site FAQ:
"Material credited to STScI on this site was created, authored, and/or prepared for NASA under Contract NAS5-26555. Unless otherwise specifically stated, no claim to copyright is being asserted by STScI and it may be freely used as in the public domain in accordance with NASA's contract. However, it is requested that in any subsequent use of this work NASA and STScI be given appropriate acknowledgement. STScI further requests voluntary reporting of all use, derivative creation, and other alteration of this work."
If I were to go to a local CVS and get a bunch of those wallpaper images turned into 16x24" posters, what would be the best size image to download? The highest quality one (usually 2560x1024)?
I'm a photo nub :/
Hate to be 'that guy' but to me, to hear that this is giant would mean it was larger than 23" x 23"...
This one isn't offered in the 52"x52" - the top price refers to a 23"x23" version.
I think there's a big difference between creating your own using a site like Zazzle, or sending one to your friend for "free" like the hubble site recommends, then SELLING them to make yourself profit. I promise you they do not condone taking their pictures and selling them for your profit. This is a huge FAIL
