scares the hell out of my cat

I've got thresholds between some rooms that are maybe a centimeter or a bit more. My Scooba gets stuck on them. Will this?

vote-for4vote-against

@craigthom:
1cm high?
I have some thresholds that are fairly flush, and have seen the roomba climb over cables, etc.

The only time I've ever seen it really get stuck is when it ramps itself up onto something and becomes wedges half up a wall, or if it travels into a rapidly diminishing space and becomes pinched.

The tyres are large and knobbly with a bouncy suspension. The rest of the roomba teeter-totters on top of them.

Can't really see a threshold stopping it.

@craigthom: None of my thresholds hinder my Roomba 550 in any way. It even goes onto the tile, which is a good 1/4" transition. Mine hops over cords alot too.

I really want one of these. When I finally can afford a place of my own (I live at home while finishing school) I'm going to have one of these guys... I'll name it Jerry or something like that, and I'll take care of him as he serves me faithfully true. I can't forget to feed him, don't need to walk him... he earns his stay... I swear, these things are the pets of the future :P

Freddie the cat is terrified of any vacuum but pays no attention to the roomba. the roomba works great!

vote-for3vote-against

I've been wanting one of these for a while and this is actually a really good price for a new one.

vote-for4vote-against

I haven't been doing my research on these roomba vacuums yet, but is this worth the price? Are there any real advantages to buying the more expensive ones? Our new house will have a fairly open floor plan but the roomba will have to maneuver between tile, carpet, & laminate.

I have two Roombas - older models. I thinking of getting another one. They are simply wonderful. When you empthy their dust pans, you'll be amazed how much dirt is in them. I block some very low or tight areas that I know the Roomba will have a hard time getting out of. They go from carpet to tile with no problem. Yes...I am uberlazy.

To all of you wondering if these are worth the money or if this is a good price....YES to both! I own this exact model and this is definitely an amazing price and worth every penny! I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Roomba! This model is good for pet hair (some of the others are not), it returns to its base to charge after cleaning, and this one has the scheduling feature! Mine runs every day at 10am when my husband and I are both out of the house. I just empty the bin every day and do a quick cleaning of the brushes to pull the hair out (it's usually my hair--my pet's hair goes through into the dust bin). I have a Scooba too (also love it) and my Roomba seems smarter and never gets stuck (my Scooba gets stuck sometimes). I can't recommend these or this price enough! Especially for this model (and it looks like this is a brand new unrefurbished model!).

We got a 530 off of Woot late July. I've been really impressed with the little guy. He manages to go from a pretty high carpet down to tile and back, cross a 1/2" high/2"+ across marble threshhold from tile to different tile, and even climb over 1" round pipe.

He also does a better job on my thick, compacted old carpet than any vacuum I've used. The carpet is getting clean, all the way down, not just taking the crud off the surface.

Cont'd--
We have fluffy dogs and I have really long hair, which tends to entangle rollers and gears and burn out vacuum motors. The Roomba just stops when it's too tangled to keep going, and it's really, really easy to pop open and pull the rollers out to clean them. And hey, a regular vacuum would be choking on the fluff just as much, only it'd be near-impossible to clean the rollers AND I'd be the one pushing it.

We did find that fluff can get in the weirdest places; under every single part that is yellow on the rollers, for example, including the tips. But as long as we get the rollers clean when the Roomba asks us to, so far it's working astonishingly well.

I love my Roomba. I have it schedule for noon on M/W/F, and does a great job keeping the floors clean enough that I only need to do a sweep/vacuum once a week to get under the things it can't.

@ladygzb: I have the 530, too. I can vacuum the carpet so it looks pristine then run the roomba around. When the roomba is done and docks I check the bin and am continually amazed how much dust is in the bin. It's amazing and gross at the same time.

Buy a roomba. You won't regret it.

I'm going to turn this into a DJ Roomba

I got one last time this was on Woot!. I love it! keeps my cat hair to a minimum without much effort at all. An occasional cleaning is needed and I empty the Bin every morning, but that is all. Great to program when it runs. It also scares the hell out of my Cat! but it is worth not swiffering everyday. Well worth it!

My roomate had one years ago when we were in college. It was fantastic and got beat up quite a bit and still worked. I've been waiting for an awesome deal on one and I just pulled the trigger. Cant wait for it to show up.

I was thinking about getting one of these to handle the second floor of my house (continue using the vacuum where most pets and children under five spend their time). Any issues with these guys and stairs? Do they have sensors to see if there is a drop-off to prevent it from falling down stairs?

I have an older Roomba Discovery bought referb. from Woot, I love it! It really gets the living-room clean. The only complaint/question stopping me from buying a second is the battery, I have had to replace the battery each year (about $60) as it wont hold a charge any longer. anyone know if that is specific to the older models?

Otherwise I would undoubtedly recommend a Roomba to anyone, and strongly suggest buying a new one like this and not a referb!

it has sensors to keep it from falling, the virtual walls can be scheduled differently than the vacuum allowing you to create different zones that get cleaned on different days (if you have more than one virtual walls and can map it out in your home). Overall an excellent product and worth its weight in dirt removal.

had to add on, the cat was scared at first but has come to accept the roomba as part of the family, its the 4 year old who is constantly caught trying to ride the poor roomba, and as far as cleaning power the legos and m&m's left in the carpet never stood a chance. to be blunt i bought stock in iRobot after buying my roomba.

@pnewell: Yes they do! I tested mine at my parent's house (as my apt is too small for stairs) and it was amazing to see the little thing keep itself from tumbling over the edge. My parents were actually shocked and suggested getting a horde of them to clean their house.

Mine has been absolutely amazing, best time saver in the world. I press "clean" when I leave in the morning and I come home to a clean apartment. It takes about 5 minutes total for me to clean out the bin and remove all the hair/lint from the rollers (Hint- get a seam ripper and some compressed air cans), in other words it takes 5 minutes of my time to have clean floors.

I was pleasantly surprised with my Roomba and its ability to cross certain thresholds. The Scooba is a different story depending on which model you get. The smaller ones don't have the suspension, but aren't designed to clean more than 150 sq ft anyway and are best kept performing smaller tasks.

It's funny that my dog doesn't care about the Roomba at all when it's doing it's job, but get jealous when I spend more time paying attention to it.

vote-for2vote-against

@pnewell: Yes, they have cliff sensors to prevent an impromptu trip to the bottom floor. I bought a 440 (My very first woot!) a long time ago, and love it. The battery's dying after all these years, but it still manages to clean the place pretty well.

If you've got long hair or long haired pets, you may need to clean the brushes more often, but it's not too bad. It picks up a surprising amount of litter the two cats track into the place.

@artecs2: Mine is four years old, and still holding most of its charge. I start it before I leave for work, and when I come back it's done the living room, the hallway and the (vinyl floored) dining room, and is sitting in one place complaining about a dead battery, but has done its best on the way. I watched it once, and it ran for around an hour before dying.

This deal is marked "dead", but it still has three days left and is not sold out.

"(Hint- get a seam ripper and some compressed air cans)"

Mine has a pair of scissors and a toothbrush, and one of those short-toothed metal dog combs for really bad roller fluff.

vote-for1vote-against

Alright, I'm in for one. :)

Are there any "Upkeep" accessories I should look into or is just keeping the brushes/rollers cleaned-out really all I need to do? Are there belts or anything that need replacing periodically?

vote-for1vote-against

I got mine today. No problem with the thresholds or even the bathmat when it bunched it up.

The cat isn't fond of it. I hope she'll get used to having it around.
