Considering even a 1TB is like 150 bucks right now yeah, this is defintitely worth it for someone needing a new HD.

What's this? 3TB hard drive not priced way up in the stratosphere?
Definitely a deal.

Keep in mind, these are NOT for raid use. The drives will fail in just a few months. THe green line is a solo line. Go black line for Raid. Otherwise, just need that 3tb, awesome deal, right now anyway.

@jditto: I second that... I tried the 3 of the 2TB drives in Raid 5... Lasted a week. Wiped/formatted and bought one more. Tried Raid 10. Worked GREAT for about 7 months. And then I lost a disk. Said it was rebuilding. Said rebuilding for like 2 days. Rebooted the PC... lost a 2nd one... same mirror. Everything gone. Have now had four 2TB WD Black drives in Raid 5 for over a year. I'm still "testing" raid 5 on the black drives. However, I have EVERYTHING loaded on them. I haven't gotten so much as a degraded state with these in place. (running on a core i7 Proc & mobo).

So, these would be good for slapping in a solo harddrive case as an external?

A steal yes, but these drives have a tendency to die really quickly.

It has a 2 year warranty, but dealing with peoples warranties is a pain in the ass.

Also be realistic its a 3tb drive, where you probably won't use the 3tb of spoace. If you did use this space we still have this drive is prone to failure and your data is constantly at risk.

To be honest skip the deal and go grab one of the 1TB Caviar Blacks. It the black line is much better anyways since it supports RAID.

I can EASILY fill 3tb multiple times. I gotta get a pay check so I can pick one up.

Wow, a lot of really bad information in these comments. First of all, you can use these drives in a raid environment depending on your controller. I have a Synology 1511+ NAS and these drives are on the approved list for use in that NAS and many users use them with few problems (at least according to their forums). I have 5 of the 2tb green drives going for a little over a year with zero problems.

Second, as far as the failure rate goes, it seems to be the luck of the draw when it comes to drives. Some people seem to have a lot of failures with a particular drive while others will swear by them. Between me, my office, and members of my family, I have installed about 10 WD drives and only had one fail after about 6 years of use while 3 Seagates went out within a year. Meanwhile, a friend of mine won't touch WD and uses Seagate exclusively because he gets the exact opposite results.

Oh, and those of you who trump the black edition to use in a raid, a quick search of Western Digital's knowledge base would tell you that the black edition is not recommended for raid use either. The only drives Western Digital makes that are raid supported are the enterprise edition.

Does this mean you can't successfully use the black in a raid? Of course not. It simply depends on your raid controller. However, if the data you are storing is critical, I would stick with the enterprise editions.

I have had one of these drives for a couple of years (the 1 TB version). The drive is still working perfect. One thing to note is that this one is perfect for storing data like videos, pictures, music, etc... But I do not recommend it for installing a OS.

FWIW: I have 3 2TB WD Greens that have been running almost 24/7 for the past... almost 2 years now.

No problems whatsoever.

Great deal though.

I read a lot of horror stories about the 2TB Green drives before I bought my first one. I've been using two of them for over 1 1/2 years with no problem. That being said, it still freaks me out about losing that much data at once, so I use the second 2TB drive as a back up for the first one. It's painless after the first backup since I can do incremental ones after that. As long as they don't both go out at the same time (the second one is kept off-line most the time), hopefully I'll be okay. It was an easy decision to make back when they cost $60-70 each. The peace of mind is priceless.

Ah, wish I had the cash right now. I run one of these in an external to back up a 1tb black and another 2tb green. I use FreeFileSync for backups, open source and works well. http://sourceforge.net/projects/freefilesync/

@ranton: Agreed. I use 3 of the 2TB drives in RAID5 on my server for storage drives. They work great, and I wouldn't expect them to fail any more or less than a Blue or Black drive. I just had a Black drive fail after about 3 months of use, so... Hard drive reliability in general is down.

If it's really important, back it up.

This is a good deal. The people above who say it will fail are using it for beyond what a normal user would use it for. If this is gonna be your everyday drive or something you are gonna store a lot of videos on, WD is the way to go. The fail rate on these is low compared to Seagate which will fail after a month or so.

You are safe to buy this.
