It may be $2 off, but it's still homeopathic nonsense. Save your money for real medicine, not tricked-out sugar pills.
@geekgear: That's your opinion, and that's fine! However, we use Zicam at the first signs of a cold, and it works very well to alleviate the symptoms and shorten the cold to a few days instead of weeks or months.
@thebopster: Sorry, that's not an opinion. Homeopathy is water, that is a fact. Water doesn't cure colds, that is a fact. Real medicine is preferable to fake medicine, that is a fact. If you want to believe in magical water and waste your money on it, you are free to do so, but remember that the onus is on YOU to prove that the water is magical, and your anecdote doesn't cut it.
@thebopster Actually, all studies done with zinc and vitamin C have proven that neither of these remedies show significant decreases in time until resolution of symptoms. Same goes for echinacea. One day all you hippies will learn that this multi-billion dollar industry is ripping you all off
There are several lawsuits claiming that Zicam caused permanent loss of smell. Consumer Reports advises against using it, citing the cost, lack of proven clinical efficacy, and possible serious permanent adverse effects. The FDA also advises against it, for the same reasons:
http://www.fda.gov/Newsevents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/ucm167065.htm
Actually, with 10% zinc, Zicam is not homeopathic. See: http://www.homeopathic.org/content/zicam-is-not-homeopathy
You have to wonder, if the FDA is so concerned the potential for "serious harm" for this product, WHY DON'T THEY BAN IT???
I guess they're too busy allowing drugs on the market that have side effects like heart attacks (meridia, avandia), kidney failure (zetia, trasylol), breast cancer (propecia) and lupus (provera).
@wilfbrim: Interesting that the tablets don't make it onto the advisory. Something about coating the nose with Zicam reduces the sense of smell. Shocker.
Homeopathy is crap, and this company is crap.
Double Maddness. (with double d's)
And then next he'll say Obama is a bad president!
Why would you think these things.......
@asmith69: Actually, in February 2011 there was a large meta analysis done of using zinc to shorten and/or prevent colds. Findings:
Zinc administered within 24 hours of onset of symptoms reduces the duration and severity of the common cold in healthy people. When supplemented for at least five months, it reduces cold incidence, school absenteeism and prescription of antibiotics in children.
However, they provided no dosage recommendations or anything, so it's not very helpful.
(However I 100% agree that homeopathy is a scam, and I would never use a zicam product.)
I can't speak for any of the pills, but I used one of the Zicam nasal sprays and I ended up having a reaction to it that devolved into a sinus infection that was so severe that I'll never touch it again.
@geekgear: The water isn't magic. It's the magic striking of the vessel 10 times that is the magic. If the water was magic then any plain water would cure everything since presumably each water molecule has imprinted with every substance it's ever come into contact with.
Don't get me wrong, it's still absolute BS, but by just saying the water is magic you're giving Homeopaths more credit that they're worth.
I have a friend that worked on the lawsuit--and yes, there was a settlement for the plaintiffs. Loss of smell, etc...
I believe it settled only recently--during the second half of 2011.
No thanks, I'll pass!
The lawsuits and loss of smell only apply to the swabs, which they stopped selling once the issues came up (Not sure if it was a voluntary act or not).
