People may say that Harbor Freight is junk, which it very well is in most cases.
However, when you can buy a tool to use that you would normally rent for the same price, I don't see the harm in it.
One time use tools for rental price. Thats fine for most cases, because you usually use them only once anyway, then they lay around and your wife and buddies all ask you, "why do you have so many tools?"
I used a HF bandsaw professionally for a decade and sold it for 50% of what I paid. It was loud and nasty, but it did the job, as do most of the other HF tools I have. They're definitely not up to contractor use, but far more than 1 shots. I usually buy them when it's something I do once in a blue moon, like when I needed a big offset drill to wire through joists. It did the job fine at 1/3 the price of the industry standard Milwaukee. And all the air tools have been terrific.
I have a 18v HF cordless drill that just won't die. I keep trying to kill it so I can get one with an LED on the front.
I'm beginning to think it's immortal. If it ever starts playing Queen, I'm out of here.
I have quite a few HF tools. They are as good as most anything on the market, including Crapsman.
No way HF tools stack up to Craftsman. But they are certainly more than 1-time-use tools. I've had a cheap table saw from them for quite a few years and it has aided in many-a-home improvement projects.
What good is the coupon when it has so many exceptions?
*Cannot be used with any other discount or coupon. Coupon not valid on any of the following: gift cards, Inside Track Club membership, extended service plans, Compressors, Generators, Tool Cabinets, Welders, Floor Jacks, Campbell Haustold products, open box items, Parking Lot Sales Items, Blowout sale Items, Day After Thanksgiving Sale Items, Tent Sale items, 800 number orders or online orders.
I certainly would have used it to buy a new floor jack, but guess that is out of the question.
I probably subscribe to at least 5 magazines that have HF coupons in them every single month, including one for 20% off of one item.
I am a contractor and i love these tools. they often work better than the same tools priced 3 or 4 times, and i think they last longer than the big brand names. I must have atleast 20 power tools from HF.... their stuff is great.... go save yourself some money
Why all the Harbor Freight is crap comments? I don't know where you guys buy tools because all the tools I buy at any store are crap... They are 99% made in china including Craftsman who people seem to claim are somehow high quality despite being made in China like everyone elses tools. Harbor Freight in my experience isn't any lower quality then all the other brands sold at Lowes, Home Depot, Sears, Ace, et cetera. If you guys know some secret place to buy high quality tools from let me know because I haven't found it yet so I'll stick to buying tools that cost 1/4 as much and last along as any of the more expensive tools I've bought in the last 20 years.
Ask yourself these questions when buying things from Harbor Freight:
"Does it have moving parts?"
"Does it have electronics?"
If you answer yes to any of the above, then don't rely on the tool/thing. You're just wasting your own time and money.
^^^_applies to everywhere not just Harbor Freight
According to HF, their suppliers make tools for the big name brands, also, but by going direct, they're able to sell items for less.
HF is alright. I used to use a ton of pneumatic HF tools in a manufacturing shop for years and they stood up to hell all day long. Rarely would we have to replace them. Generally if they work good the first few times, they will work good for a few hundred times. Keep em oiled and bang em up. YMMV of course, but that's my exp.
I see that CH tools are excluded from the list which is what we mainly used, but there were others that worked just great.
I have a HF floor jack that is 14 years old but leaks hydro and the spring on the foot pedal broke so I have to hold the foot pedal to the lever while jacking. I'd buy another if anyone made one about 50" long with 36" of lift. I have the 20 ton shop press that I use a lot, I just used it to de-bead eight old tires that I'm scrapping the metal wheels for, I've used it to press in and out all kinds of pressed on automotive parts. I don't have any sockets, ratchets, or wrenches from them, but they're probably okay. I think their specialty tools and hyraulics are the best buys.
Just used this deal today from the store mailer. Most HFs in my area also have the mailers in-store as well if you don't want to bother printing it out. I've had little quality issues with HF in the past but I buy mostly hand tools.
BUT- People complain about the quality, and the 'one time use' thing may be fair in some cases, BUT(!) their hand tools have a lifetime warranty, and, while that ain't always convenient, I have bought & broken tie rod separators and gotten not only a free replacement but also an unsolicited apology. Customer service goes a long way with me, and I used to be one of those jackwagons that ACTUALLY bought tools off a tool truck and proudly overpaid.
HF just buys tools from the cheapest supplier, 99% of them located in China. Quality varies widely amongst Chinese suppliers. Interestingly, some of the oldest Chinese tools I have from when they started being sold en-masse in the USA about 20 years ago are still going strong. IOW, cost-cutting by Chinese vendors has affected their quality (DUH)
The oldest tool I have that I use regularly is still the toughest - a 12" Crescent brand crescent wrench dating from about 1955. But all old tools are not created equal. For example, steel tools older than about 1930 are weaker because of the advances in alloys after that time.
