Good deal but the shipping kinda kills it. $6.99 for the lowest option. I wonder how and if the coupon code would work if I went to the store? I'll post again if I figure it out.
Jacks and Jack Stands are the two things you really shouldn't scrimp on... They're all that's between you and a couple thousand pounds of automobile.
I got these in store yesterday for this sale price. One thing that made me uneasy about them was that they say for automotive use, yet the 6 ton stands say for SUVs/trucks. Does that mean these are unsafe on anything heavier than a car? Does the weight rating refer to the vehicle curb weight or the actual amount of mass that can be safely supported across them?
If your vehicle weighs 3 tons, it weighs 6,000 lbs. Each tire supports 1500 lbs... Each stand will see 1500 lbs if you're using a stand on each corner. Each stand is rated to hold 3 tons, so you should be OK. When in doubt you should always buy jack stands that are rated higher. Skimping on something that stands between you and getting crushed by a 3 ton vehicle just isn't worth it.
A set of 3-ton jack stands means that they support 3 tons total, not 3 tons per jack stand. I doubt many people drive anything over 3 tons.
@electricfuzz: Good call. I checked the manual and it agrees.
You can only support about half the weight with two stands. So if you have a 3 ton car, you'll support 1.5 tons. You'll be using half the capacity of these stands.
My friend Jack will love these, as he is frequently falling down drunk.
The reason they recommend the 6-ton for SUVs is more about height than weight. They are much taller than these. And honestly, these are one of the best bargains at HF. It's a fantastic jack stand, I trust my safety to them often. They certainly beat the pants off the old flimsy tubular-style I used to use!
@sungo13: Did you need the coupon code?
I got a couple of these a few years ago for this price, and they are probably the highest quality item carried at HF. Which is nice if you're under a couple thousand pounds of steel..
Remember kids, never - under any circumstance, get under a car without jack stands. ;-)
@tsog: I had the coupon from their email list. I actually tried using a 20% off $100 first but apparently it can't be used towards a floor jack, which I was also buying.
I picked these up in the store last night, I was able to just give them the coupon code posted here and they typed it in and I got the deal. There is a coupon that came out in the local paper for them also, but they are $2 more
