And so, how do these compare to Le Creuset [sic, probably] pots, pans, and the like? I mean, the Creusets are regarded favorably, but at $200+ per item, I am not inclined to buy them. As a substitute, how well do these Cuisinarts fare?

vote-for1vote-against

with cast iron stuff, there's not much difference- if a product is 100% cast iron, then the material's can't be higher/lower in quality, and as long as it's a solid piece (no wood handles or anything) then there's no structural problems. The only thing that changes is the enamel coating- but as long as it can withstand high heat, it's fine.
Lodge Logic is a cast iron company, if you look at their site they have some info about buying cast iron. I think that's where I got all that info from.

I'd buy this if it could ship out of the US.

Why are we unable to access the deal? I keep getting a server error!

vote-for1vote-against

Same here. Maybe the web server for sellout is down.... again.

vote-for1vote-against

@julieriera: Looks like it's up now. Try again. I think I'll pick one up myself. It's a great price.

vote-for1vote-against

Ditto on the 503 server error/service unavailable message. Pooh.

vote-for1vote-against

Worked for me just now...in for 1.

vote-for1vote-against

Looks like it's dead again.

Might be time to kick Yahoo to the curb if they keep 503 errors.

Somebody asked earlier about the handles being hot, we have Mario Batali 6 Qt dutch oven an he has silicon pot grips which are a bit expensive but really work, look up pot grips an their is someone else that has them for about half the price, or just use a silicone pot holder.
This pot will make great beans or c whole chicken or a large beef roast. you can brown your roast or shanks on the stovetop and add veggies in the oven, It is a very useful but heavy pot for many dishes, tomatoes will stain the enamel a bit but it doesn't hurt it. Men, help the ladies with the pot, she cooks good meals for you, give her a hand.

@rslong: "Men, help the ladies with the pot, she cooks good meals for you, give her a hand."

It was a charming, light-hearted, well intentioned thought, but I felt like we just timewarped back to the 1950's.

In my house, I cook the good meals, and my wife could probably carry me and the pot. And what's the advice for a household with two ladies and no men? :-0

Good night, and good morning. :-)

Cooks' Illustrated (as usual) had a good review of Dutch ovens, and it turns out that all cast iron is NOT equal.

CI rated enameled cast iron well in general, whether it was a $40 Lodge model or the $250++ Le Creuset, with a couple of exceptions. They didn't include this brand in the test line-up, but for about $10 more you can get the Lodge brand that was one of their recommendations.

Things to look for in an enameled pot:

-- What temperature can the lid knob withstand? This is important if you want to use the pot in the oven as well as on the stove top. On Amazon, it looks like a lot of people are buying a replacement higher-spec knob with their Dutch ovens.

-- How wide is the base of the pot? The wider the better as it gives you more cooking surface e.g. for browning.

-- Heat retention. Does the temperature of, say, oil drop significantly when food is added? The best pots retain their heat well.

vote-for3vote-against

How big are the pots?

vote-for1vote-against

A big factor is how durable the enameling is. It's not much of a deal if the enamel starts to flake off after a few uses.

Country of origin is a factor for many people. Le Creuset is made in France. The Lodge enamel and probably this one are made in China.

I've got a Lodge one, and it's doing fine so far. I replaced the lid handle with a cabinet door knob so I could get it hotter.

You can use it to make no-knead bread: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/08/dining/081mrex.html. It's super-easy to make, and tastes like you got it from a great bakery.

Here's a video showing how easy it is: http://video.nytimes.com/video/2006/11/07/dining/1194817104184/no-knead-bread.html

sucks I keep getting errors

vote-for1vote-against

ok link is working for me???
These are great pans!!!! Stuff them in the oven, or use them on the stove top the Enamel makes them almost non stick and VERY easy to clean.

Care needs taken on Glass Cooktops,LOL never let your kids set them on the cooktop or the men!Unless that is you need a new Glass Cooktop!

Paula Dean has a line of them, they are not as big as these and more expenesive If you have a big lots near you, score the smaller ones cheaper
For the out of the USA people checkout ebay although your shipping on these would be murder as they are Freaking heavy to ship

vote-for2vote-against

Lodge is the only manufacturer in USA. It is highly regarded. Yes, there is a big difference.

vote-for0vote-against

@enigmachick: The company is located in the USA. Their enamel cookware is made in CHINA. Go Look at their website: http://www.lodgemfg.com/lodge-history.asp

Having said that, I believe that they have their own quality control standards even on Chinese made items, as their cookware is always top notch. On the other hand, I bought a Mario Batali dutch oven (made in China) that was warped on the bottom right out of the box causing a bad hotspot.

vote-for2vote-against

Ya know, if I'm mixing some sauteed onions up with turmeric, I feel that the contrast of the mixture against the white ceramic would be much more satisfying than if against the black of plain ol' cast iron.

Now, for a good question that I am pretty sure I can guess the answer to.

Are these safe for use with induction burners?

vote-for1vote-against

these sell for over !$100 on ebay and the MSRP on the Cuisinart site is $129. this is a GREAT deal!

vote-for1vote-against

red is all gone - blue is still available, though. I'm in for one.

vote-for1vote-against

I wanted a red one too, but I'll take blue. I've been scoping these things for MONTHS. Sweet deal! The significant other is psyched too because he knows I'll start making homemade soup!

vote-for1vote-against

These Cuisinarts are great - I picked up an orange-ish colored one around Xmas last year at Marshalls for $35 or so. The knob is metal as well (unlike the Lodge pot, which I believe comes with a plastic knob) so you can just pop it in the oven as-is. It is great for making no-knead bread!

vote-for1vote-against

@czetie: CI was looking at cast iron enamel coated dutch ovens similar to Le Creuset but at a lower cost. LC is the gold standard but retails over $200. They only reviewed enamel coated cast iron pots retailing below $100. That is likely why this pan was not included. I believe this Cuisinart model MSRP is in the $140 range.

I've had the red one for like 5 years. Its awesome. I highly recommend.

@foodking69: In my house, I cook the good meals, and my wife could probably carry me and the pot. And what's the advice for a household with two ladies and no men?

Been happily married to my wife for 44 years. whenever I post anything about being respectful to wives, I always get a negative response. You make your bed, and I'll make mine.

I do much of the cooking too. Gender aside, I could use a hand with a 25 pound pot half full of boiling liquid. I cook with cast iron a lot, skillets and dutch oven, this is a great deal.

Best Regards

vote-for2vote-against

@enigmachick: While the regular Lodge cast iron is made in Tennessee, their enameled products are made in China.

vote-for1vote-against

@kmiller4: Uh, no, the CI comparison was NOT restricted to pots under $100. The review I was looking at included the Le Creuset as well as at least one other priced well over $100.

vote-for1vote-against

I'm glad these sold out. I was ready to buy a couple of them just to have them - I already have a couple that i use several times a week.
