Wow, a super downvoted Moofi deal... I get why it happened, but how was it allowed to happen?

considering the 17's are no longer being sold (new), this is actually a pretty good deal. They're apple refurbs, not 3rd party, and come with a 1 yr manufacturer's warranty that you can add applecare to also. They're $200 more at the apple store, not sure how woot is getting them this cheap. I've bought a refurb a few times in the past, then used the money I saved to get the 2 yrs additional warranty. So no concerns about it being a refurb, and basically got the added warranty for free.

Wow, just wow. That price is astronomically high for that thing. Who wouldn't just buy a brand new one?

@takenforgranite: I view the fact that it is allowed to happen a positive commentary of Woot!'s integrity/ethics.

@solkre: You CANNOT get one new. Apple recently stopped making them. They're moving everything over to the super slim, optical driveless, retina style system. The 17" got axed when they did this.

I'd buy this in a second if I hadn't just bought a new 15 inch about 6 months ago.

It says the ram limit is 8, but really it's 16gb. You can pull out the optical drive and replace it with a solid state. I have a 1TB hard drive and a 512GB solid state in my 15 inch right now. It has a thunderbolt port, it's unibody... Best of all worlds really. I like these better, because if you take out the optical drive, (and put it in an external enclosure for those rare times that you actually need one,) it's easy to add a second drive.

And it comes with a 1 year apple warranty. Whine if you want, but this is a good deal.

Well. Either way. Shipping kills it for me.

@takenforgranite: Will you explain why, then? I can't figure it out myself. That's a good deal on a 17" that isn't available anymore.

@jsfs: I've ran into several people recently wanting to upgrade to the newest 17". Most of them are graphics artists or publishers. They like the big screen on the road. Not everyone has the good eyesight to just run at max res on a retina (which ends up being about the same number of pixels) No fun getting old and needing a bigger screen, I'll second that. ;( Anyway, this is a significant price drop from what the 17's went for new before the last refresh. Not everyone knows you can buy refurb MBP's, and I think this will make a lot of people happy, getting the machine that they thought they wouldn't be able to get anymore, for cheaper than it was when they missed their opportunity earlier. It's too big for me though, I need the 15 for the portability. The 17 is too much of a "tv dinner tray" as I like to call them. But for the artists and publishers, 17" is awesomeness.

@jsfs: I fail to see how paying $1700 for a $900* dollar laptop is a good deal.... a 2+ year old, used laptop at that.

I tried to find a laptop with the same stats, but I just can't find anything that has a Core I7 and the rest of the guts filled with cheap parts. Everything I've found has more memory, better stand alone graphics cards, bigger harddrive, and most of them option a blu-ray drive in there as well.

For example:
http://www.dell.com/us/p/inspiron-17r-se-7720/pd (second configuration is $1138 as described, and has much better stats all around)

Sure, it doesn't have Mac OS on it, but if its really that important, talk to my friend Google, and either find a way to put MacOS on there that way, or find a nerd to do it for you.

*(I would not pay $900 for that laptop either. I'd go for something closer to $500, since its used)

@virtual1one: Apple store has these for the exact same price now.

Apple price locks everything. no one can undersell anyone. the only way to make a better deal is to offer a better package of peripherals with it ( free printer, extra software, fancy bag to stuff it in)

vote-for2vote-against

Hey, that's only $100 per inch, sounds like a bargain to me.

@whitewind: they've removed it from the front page on deals.woot and replaced it with a pillow.
