This may not be the best android tablet out there but hey it's dirt cheap and with minor mods you can have full access to the Andoid Marketplace.
Or even for an internet tablet it's worth it.
I know somebody who has one of these...Definitely a good deal on a decent budget tablet. It comes with a fancy case too!
It's a resistive touch screen, so be prepaid to put 'yer back into it - and it comes with a stylus just for that.
These were selling for $90 on 1SAD not too long ago..
hmm wasn't this just the sellout woot the other day?
@jyoz22: Yes 45 min ago from me :P Woot decided to run me over and post there own post of this.
But yes it has been on here a few times but this is the lowest price yet.
The price from a couple day's ago was $79.99 + $5 Shipping this is $20 Cheaper.
Is it possible to update this to a more recent version of Android? Or is access to the marketplace the best thing?
@expickwickmoose: After doing a little searching it does not look like you can upgrade the OS. But I may be wrong
Even if you could upgrade the OS it may not perform as well due to its current specs.
It claims to be an ARM11 800MHZ Processor (Though it may only be running at 600MHZ) which is quite a bit slower than the Cortex A8 or even A9 CPU's found in smart phones even at the same frequency’s.
Also with 256 ram you will be quite limited. I know that Android 3.0(Gingerbread) Needs 512MB of ram to run.
Also note that Augen has also gone out of business
@dribbles: Perhaps you'd like to share what you're basing that on?
Maybe something like this:
http://www.augengentouch.com/ ?
I'm serious, is there something I don't know?
You get what you pay for.
65 bucks is a good deal. Don't look to Augen for support if you have problems as their website is gone and their helpdesk site seems to be gone as well. If you're into datamining, there's enough info on the various android forums and blogs that should help you out, but it does require some solid research. IMHO, if you're new to tablets, you might want to stick to a better supported brand like apple or samsung.
BBB website:
According to information in the BBB files, it appears that the company is no longer in business. The phone numbers the BBB had for this company are disconnected, and directory assistance does not have a listing for this company. The BBB's mail to this company has been returned as undeliverable. If you have an unresolved dispute with this company you may wish to seek legal advice.
The Better Business Bureau has verified that the company's phone numbers are either disconnected or rapid busy, website is inactive and the mail has been returned by the post office.
@havocsback: There has been quite a bit written speculating that Augen has gone out of business. No official word that (I've seen) however they have been MIA so long that it is very likely the case...

@havocsback: If you click on the site you link to, you would see it is nothing more than a blog about Augen tablets
"Blog about the Augen Gentouch tablet pc running Android 2.1."
apparently last updated in April. They are definitely out of business, at least for the moment.
According to http://www.augengentouch.com/augen-gentouch-78-different-versions/ (the web site posted by @havocsback), there are two versions of this beast. Based on the picture, it looks like this Woot! is for the newer version. Can anyone confirm this?
Does netflix work on this thing? I need something for the kids to watch movies on other than my phone (sticky finger kids).
I am looking for a (very) cheap but decent tablet to use for developing apps. I'm trying to chug through the xda-developers thread but its lonnngg. Any opinions on whether this would or would not be a go? Using a motorola droid with 2.2 now but it isn't mine and I'll eventually have to give it back. That supports using API level 8 but I'm pretty sure I'm not using anything that isn't supported in level 7.
Read user review on cnet.com. he seems to have on big problem with it: http://reviews.cnet.com/tablets/augen-gentouch-78/4505-3126_7-34169102.html?tag=mncol;lst;1
I bought one of these from 1SaleADay when it was $95 shipped as a Mother's Day present for my wife. I was kind of disappointed I didn't do my homework before buying it, because I didn't know there was no Android Marketplace by default, as well as the other quirks about this model; I wish I could find the Amazon site that was selling it because it had a bunch of mixed reviews, but it appears that Amazon is no longer carrying it. Shortly after I realized the limitations, I found the XDA forum for this device http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-739504.html . Now it is running better, but still has its limitations. I think for this price, it is totally worth it, but just know what you are getting.
@zapp brannigan: No. Pretty sure this thing will never get Netflix. Any movies you want to watch on it would have to be loaded on it first.
Not sure if it ever got Cyanogenmod, but some people were interested in it at least: http://phandroid.com/2010/07/31/augens-gentouch78-k-mart-tablet-getting-cyanogenmod-6/
Listen at 64.99 with shipping it will be a nice gift for my 9 year old that wants a Itouch. So I will test him out on this to see how he handles it.
@smorloc: But that is exactly my point. None of the financial sites, none of the computer industry related sites, (in so far as I've seen at least)
Nobody that would know has said they're out of business, and speculation based on a complete lack of facts does no one any good.
But, that's just me, I deal in facts & numbers. Y'all do what you think is right.
@delo1283: My daughter plays with my Acer A500 all of the time. After a simple root with this device, I will have all of her favorite games installed. If your son is already using these types of devices comfortably, I would think he would love it. My daughter sure will.
was in for one till my credit card got declined due to a daily spending limit... maybe its a sign?
in for 2. google search of 'daily steals' brings up some comments on them that scare me.
Well this may sound crazy but I'm buying this as an alarm clock. After a little research I found http://www.appbrain.com/app/calendar-snooze/com.bitfire.development.calendarsnooze which is supposed to make my calendar reminders into a decent alarm. So if I'm at work and my boss asks me to come in on a day and time I don't usually come in, I can just log on to my google calendar, set a reminder and this tablet should wake me up for it. It's nigh on impossible to find anything that does this without an arduino board and a lot of soldering.
Broke down and just tried to order one and the form truncated my email address to ".co" instead of ".com."
I think I may have ordered two accidentally, sent an email to their sales support-- will have an status update hopefully by tomorrow.
Or not. Pay Pal took my order, but it's not showing up on my account?
Has anyone gotten a shipping email yet? It's been a week and a half and still nothing, even though they have told me the past two days in a row that "it is scheduled to ship today."
