Note that these test strips (SofChek from Hach) test five things: Free Chlorine (0-4ppm), Total Chlorine (0-10ppm), Total Hardness (0-425ppm, 0-25 gr./gal.), Total Alkalinity (as CaCO3, 0-240ppm), pH (6.4-8.8). In particular, they ar enot going to test for lead or other heavy metals.

You can read more about these test strips at http://www.amazon.com/Hach-SofChek-Read-Quality-Strips/dp/B0017Y66BK (which is for a 50 pack of them).

This ought to be good...I live in a city that's supposed to have some of the the cleanest water in the nation. Tastes fine but I'm interested to see what shows up.

vote-for4vote-against

why not.......you could also check and complare different waters (distilled, spring and tap!) --- its gonna be a fun learing experience for littole ones!

Hmmm! Trade personal info for crappy test kit? Major fail.

How could you downvote this?

I used one of these to prove to my wife that our water is perfectly fine some of the best in the country. Rather than pay for a lifetime of water purifier filters. I remember mine costing $79.95 on Amazon.com but at least it ended the argument. That was 12 years ago, well worth the investment.

FYI I live in East Bay Area. Across the S.F Bay CA

I'm a fan of free + free shipping everything, even if it's just to sell me (edit: profanity). I got a ring size tester a little while back, which was great for conversation.

Not a fan of foul language. Just saying.

@jiggersgreen: It's not like they're asking for you're SSN. They just need your address to send the tester. And this is from a well known company. Go back to your bunker Kazinsky.

vote-for4vote-against

@jiggersgreen: Holy moly, they asked for my address to send the kit. That was it. Exactly how did you think you were going to get the product otherwise? And I would venture to say EVERY deal on deals.woot.com needs that information you moron.

I'll second baqui63's comment. These are designed to check your water hardness, not screen for lead. There's nothing wrong with that; after all, Morton wants people to buy water softeners, and they are offering the test for free. Just be aware of the limitations.

vote-for1vote-against

Pretty sure these are single use, but does anyone know if it there's only one tester per pack?

Thanks for the post, I can't wait for the kit.

If you are connected to a municipal water supply, you can get a much more detailed report from the water utility. In fact, they are required to send one to you every year. You should actually read the stuff that comes along with the bill. :)

If you are on a well, you need to test for the presence coliform bacteria. To do that a water sample needs to be sent to a water laboratory.

@markmc27: These tests don't test for particulates, bacteria, spores, or metals such as lead or excessive iron. What you ended your argument with was water hardness and chlorine content; neither tells you much about water safety.

Too much salt is bad for you tail shake.

Based on the things it does test for, I would say that it was originally intended for swimming pools. And now Mortons is sending these out to get you to buy their softening products (that's my guess based on the hardness testing). Ofcourse, you could have all this tested "for free" at your local pool store. Again, they do that to get you to buy their products when you come in.

Note: I am no longer a pool owner (yay!)

@vsatsang:

Actually I believe they're intended for people to monitor and tweak the settings on their water softeners (that's certainly why this deal exists).
