I bought this last time around. Did anyone get this to work? I didn't try much - wasn't sure how to do it.

vote-for1vote-against

It is harder to use then some matches, but will last much longer then a box of matches.

Basically, you can use it to light some paper which should light your kindling, if it is dry enough.

It's $3.99 now, deal over.

@sorensok: They have instructions on the site:

# Place the flint on ground upwardly and put the scraper vertically to the flint, then scrape some magnesium powder on some inflammable materials, like paper or branch.

# Place the flint on ground at about 45° and 2.5 cm from the magnesium powder scraped, then scrape the flint fast to produce spark so as to light up the inflammable material.

Just purchased one for $1.49 and free shipping. Their page takes you discount off when you go to checkout.

You have to use the coupon code given to get the $1.49 price. It's only good on a quantity of 1 for the 1st 1,000 purchasers.

Dryer lint works the best for starting fires fairly instantly...

vote-for2vote-against

@heymo: Unfortunately, this particular fire starter does not come with the magnesium bar. Unless you happen to carry ignitable metals in your pocket, you will have to go with dryer lint or something similar.

vote-for1vote-against

just buy a lighter

why be a cave man?

vote-for3vote-against

@publiclurker: yo, i bought one of these, and you strike the green bar against the metal rod, and you get full spark. you don't need any extra pieces as you say. i was sparking like crazy in my kitchen the other night just for fun. works great!

vote-for2vote-against

bought it tryed it didnt work got water proof matches, they worked. threw that thing away. out 1.50 next

vote-for2vote-against

@mrbigbite: why didn't it work? you need to make sure you strike it to where the 'green paint' comes off the green piece. you need it to be showing metal. SHOULD work. then again, maybe you got a dud, but i dont know if that is possible, its metal to metal, this is science, not electronics :)

I bought one of these last time around, and they work great. Just started a fire with it last Friday.

To the naysayers above me: Yes, a lighter will work better, and this is a pain in the ass. That isn't the point, the point is having something you can swim with and still start a fire when you get to the other side.

Also, I'm not sure if the rod is magnesium or not, but I was able to scrape plenty of filings onto my tinder pile, which flared right up.

There's a couple Youtube videos that demostrate how to use flints like this, I suggest you poke around there a bit. I'd send a link, but can't access Youtube at work.

Ok took it out of the trash, took off the green paint (did not know it was paint)
and VOILA science at work. Thank you.

In for 1, add to my end of the world kit

vote-for1vote-against

yeah I had an old credit card gift card sitting next to my comp just waiting to use the remaining 2 bucks on it on something like this.

vote-for1vote-against

The firestarter deal on meritline is BAAAAAAAAACK!

vote-for0vote-against

I'm in for 1. Been looking for one of these cheap.

vote-for1vote-against

Coupon code is still working

vote-for2vote-against

@sorensok: Its really easy actually, I bought my last time around as well and couldn't figure it out. Heres the video I watched on how to use it: http://www.metacafe.com/watch/2412419/goinggear_com_using_a_mischmetal_firesteel_with_various_tinders/

You have to be pretty rough when scraping it across the firesteel.

Deal works as of 11:45pm EST. Now to take it and a video camera out into the woods and make my own survival show and sell it to Discovery. Maybe Ill call it Nerd vs Wild.

vote-for1vote-against

Deal is still good. I got mine.

vote-for0vote-against

Deal is good but it's trying to charge me shipping.

this is a neat little tool. sure, it's major use would be for campers or maybe hikers, but even if you don't do either of those it is a great conversational piece. to the person who said this does not contain the magnesium bar, the round bar IS the magnesium bar, the green striker is the steel. first you shave(with the steel) a little of the magnesium off onto your starting material(paper, lint, cotton ect.), then you strike(more force than when shaving) the green steel piece(on the edge where the paint has been removed) down the bar and sparks will fly, setting off the magnesium shavings and that will start the fire on your starter material. lots of fun, impress your friends and neighbors.

@publiclurker: the round bar IS the magnesium bar

vote-for0vote-against

regards last post. Deal is still good. IT will charge shipping to a PO Box. A street Address allowed free shipping.

vote-for1vote-against

The steel piece comes with some green paint on it that needs to be scraped off before it makes a spark. It does work.

vote-for0vote-against

The trick to this thing is to take 100 grit sand paper and remove the black oxide coating. Also if you use a small section of a hacksaw blade instead of whats provided you get huge results.

vote-for1vote-against

The deal is dead.

THAT COUPON HAS BEEN USED THE MAXIMUM NUMBER OF TIMES (MLCK600702100160NL1)

Oh well.

vote-for1vote-against

the $1.49 special price has been used up, but the 5 pack for $10.45 ($2.09 each) is still a great deal, buy the 5 pack and then you have some to give away to your friends

vote-for1vote-against

this is not magnesium it's a flint bar, if it was magnesium it would burst into flames and not go out till it completely burns out
the product is a flint striker bar, the same stuff in a butane lighters
only a lot bigger
as for use... it works the same way you start any fire in the woods without a lighter or matches...
you build a little pile of fluff and strike the flint bar at it till it ignites the fluff, you lightly blow on it and add more kindling to the burning fluff, and walaaa...
you have a fire
if you read the discription title it says "flint" right on it
the striker is the steel part

@eddieangel333: NOT MAGNESIUM???

# Material : flint (magnesium), scraper (iron).
# Length of magnesium flint:5 cm.
# Diameter of magnesium flint:0.8cm.
# Length of magnesium flint:5 cm.

how many times do they have to list "MAGNESIUM" to make you believe that it is truly a magnesium bar. Apparently you don't know much about magnesium, sure a solid piece of magnesium (like this bar) will burn, but it wouold take an extreme heat to ignite a "solid" chunk of magnesium like this bar. Magnesium dust and shavings though, will ignite very easy. That is why the instructions say to shave off a small amount of the "MAGNESIUM" onto the starter material, then strike the "MAGNESIUM" bar with greater force than when shaving the bar and you will produce sparks that will ignite the "MAGNESIUM" shavings which will in turn ignite the starter material, thus you have fire.

It will come back for this price. I've bought two of these at different times. One disappeared one day.

They work great except for the green paint. It is a little bit of a pain to get it off, but once you do, it will spark right up.
