I used to be able to solve one of these in under 2 minutes. I carried it to work in my backpack just to play with it when I was angry at a problem I couldn't solve. Now I leave it at home and have trouble finishing in under 5.

Four solutions. A given face's orientation can be either North, South, East, or West in relation to a given neighbor.

I'm really glad I bought one of these a couple years ago and spent the time learning how to solve it. I've since then picked up other brain puzzles all thanks to the Rubik's Cube.

Rubik's cubes are pretty good time wasters when you're bored or you want to take a break from work. Personally, I prefer the movement/design of Eastsheen cubes though. My old 3x3 Rubik's was harder to turn and never broke in very well (could have just been a dud though... only bought the one so I don't know for sure).

I'd suggest a chinese cube over a rubik's brand cube. Lots of those sites offer free shipping (slow, most likely) and a similar price for a smooth cube. I say this after having 3 rubik's brand cubes. They don't turn well and lock up easily, even the DIY's aren't worthwhile. my2¢

One of those obscure talents that may be worth learning. I won an interesting bet with a girl at a party one night by solving the puzzle.

@mikecris: If by interesting you mean you actually got some action, OK. If not, it's still not worth learning.

@archangel117: But then the sides wouldn't match up to the neighboring colors. Each of the 26 'cubes' that form the puzzle can only go one location, since the corner and side pieces must match their neighbors and there is only one middle piece. I think. Right?

The code "SMS6087" can be used to get an extra 5% off :)

I don't know why but it ended up being $5.26 for me and then with SMS8067 the price was $4.21 plus tax/shipping

RINGIN2012 also works for 20%, no minimum (SMS6087 failed for me :))

@rockaby: Wow, same thing for me.... I put in the SMS6087 code and noticed that I received 20% off, so the total was $4.21... this is the first time I have made a purchase at Kohls online, so maybe that made a difference?

Whoops, sorry for the dyslexia...it was "6087" so I'm not sure why it didn't work for @kirika. Weird.

No worries, I just figured I'd add that code in case anyone else had trouble.

@gbmodern: Not exactly. Each face is represented by its only non-moving piece, the center. While any three segments along a side have a corresponding neighboring color, and therefore remain the same every time, the side itself can end up to the left, right, top, or bottom of its center piece. One of the ways to observe this is by drawing a face on one of the faces. Draw the nose of the face in the center square, and be sure to make it pointed. Now scramble and resolve the cube. You may observe the face now has a crooked nose, indicating that the orientation of the other cubes around the center, has changed.

@archangel117: It all makes sense now! Please excuse me as I take full advantage of this strike of understanding and go ponder a few world issues.
