dealssolo sentinel collection 17.3” laptop backpack…

OMG multiple comments on the lack of wheels, lazy lazy lazy! Wheels on heavy suitcases are great. Wheels on light carry on bags are silly. Wheels on a backpack are ridiculous! If you want to buy something with wheels buy a car not a BACKpack <--- these go on your back, no wheels needed.

vote-for9vote-against

This definitely does not meet the "Checkpoint Friendly" TSA Guidelines, so you'll have to remove the laptop from the bag to take it through a checkpoint.

The "Checkpoint Friendly" guidelines say that the bag has to:
a) Have a separate compartment for the laptop only, with nothing else in it on that side and,
b) Unzip and lay completely flat.

From looking at the pics, this bag does neither.

Forget wheels. I want it to have legs.

Wish they'd start pushing some decent camera bags.

It may not be an issue for some people, but bags like these are usually how you end up with scratches from the keyboard on the screen. If the laptop case/bag doesn't have a rigid enough compartment the force from the other stuff in the bag pushes on the screen enough that it will bend in and touch the tops of the keys. Some laptops are fairly good about this with very rigid monitor screens, but most are cheap plastic with barely enough strength. Some bags are very good about this, with fairly rigid compartments that are well padded.

ymmv, but I wouldn't trust this bag.

Does this open like a clamshell so you don't have to take it out of its compartment when you go through airport security?

vote-for5vote-against

Had to snag one. Looked perfect for going to and from work, college classes, and light travel. Similar products online appear to be in the $40-60 range and in stores (best buy, etc) seem to be $60+ for the lowest quality.

vote-for5vote-against

Wondering if this is TSA friendly, looking at the way the laptop compartment swings out. Does anybody know, I did some light research online but to no avail.

vote-for5vote-against

@mnuahs: I have not had any trouble with keyboard imprints on the screen since going to the dollar store and buying a micro-fibre cloth. when I close the laptop the cloth is inbetween the keys and screen. Nice dust cloth after openning.

I like the fact it says there's a dedicated pocket for an iPad/e-reader. I tend to bring my iPad with me everywhere, especially so if I have my notebook (for the apps on it or not wanting to fire up the notebook for bootup).

That's a big plus for me. In for one!

vote-for4vote-against

Does it come with someone to carry it for me? Possibly an 18 year old Swedish exchange student who wants to further her education in America???

vote-for3vote-against

Tempting. This would be a lot nicer than carrying a laptop case to class. Solo is a good brand too. My laptop case was made by them and I've always been extremely happy with them.

What bothers me is that the laptop compartment is on the strap side, meaning a portion of the weight of anything else in the backpack is going through the computer. Any half-decent laptop will be fine, but it's still bad design.

Also, addressing the 'wheels are for lazy people/cars', it's really more about your back. Maybe not yours specifically, not yet, but I know people to which wheeled cases make all the difference. That said, no one should be complaining about a lack of wheels at this price point.

vote-for3vote-against

@m3talcore: Not long ago, I saw something on TV about kids' school bags and the doctors were unanimous: the wheeled variety is the one sensible parents should never buy to their children. The reason is it forces them to walk with one arm trailing behind, which can severely screw up their juvenile spines by causing an imbalance in their posture. In other words, it's just not an ergonomic way of carrying anything.

Of course that was about children, who are still developing their bodies. But it makes me wonder if an adult -- specially one who already has back problems -- wouldn't experience similar problems by dragging a wheeled bag (or suitcase, for that matter).

That said, I'm on my second 17"+ laptop and I've been using a Targus backpack for almost six years now to walk about a mile to and from work six days a week. Though the fabric on the top of the computer compartment ripped early this year, I can say it does stand a lot of abuse and protects the laptop pretty well.

Did anyone else read the tagline in Amy Wong's mother's voice?

vote-for2vote-against

I also want to know about TSA rules for this bag. I'd buy two if I didn't have to take the laptop out of the bag!

vote-for2vote-against

Also, would this bag be good with a smaller laptop in it, too? I've never used one before, and I'm worried that if I put my puny 14" notebook in one that's designed for a 17.3" beauty, then it'll end up sliding around a bit too muchers.

May the wise and experience user hearken to my inquiry, and put either me or my worries to rest!

vote-for2vote-against

@mnuahs: This is a good point. I have a laptop backpack and ended up with keyboard scratches after using it a few times. But if you get a piece of felt or something soft that you can put it between the screen and keyboard it'll prevent scratches. Just wish I'd known the scratches were an issue before I used my backpack.

vote-for2vote-against

does it have 4 wheel drive?

vote-for2vote-against

Well, I just bought a 17.3" laptop and had to carry it loose on a trip this weekend because my old case didn't hold it...so I'm in for one!

vote-for2vote-against

got it for my lady, who's been complaining about her junk of a backpack she has now. this is exactly what she was looking for.

vote-for2vote-against

@avengerofpi: Wow, impressive words. If people want wheels on a backpack, they should go to a luggage store. A backpack that fits my laptop and a few other toys suits me just fine. That's why I bought 2 (one for my husbands laptop too). Wheels on a small laptop sized backpack sounds like it would be looking for trouble, like someone stepping or tripping on it.

vote-for1vote-against

Nice bag. We need one for a trip soon, but I don't think it'll make it here in time. :(

vote-for1vote-against

THe pockets are "wrong". The largest section is the one with the laptop which should provide only a cushioned sleeve. The central pocket is thin - not wide enough for a lunch or a couple books. (Don't want food slop in the computer sleeve section!). I have a Vera Bradley that is designed PERFECTLY for all of the above - and it's so lightweight - no wheels necessary. VB worth every penny. Pass on this one.

vote-for1vote-against

@mdog0202: I bought two of these. One for a 13.3 mac and a 17.3 hp. If you read the fact sheet, it has 3 compartments for different sized items. This is exactly what I've been looking for. Nice heavy duty handle on top for exiting a car, then the thick padded straps for putting on my back leaving my arms free for when I order my artichoke soufflé and coffee at Panera's! Now all I need is a folding cordless keyboard and a small cordless mouse to place in the bag with my laptop!

vote-for1vote-against

@awl85: Yep! They are boss, I love tue one I got!

vote-for1vote-against

Is the compartment size correct? It seems too small. My Asus 17.3" laptop is 16.5" x 12.5" x 1.75" (WxDxH). Seems nice otherwise than being too small for what it adverises it to fit (in the title at least). If you say 17.3" you should be able to fit 99% of them.

vote-for1vote-against

Just ordered one. Thanks WOOT!

vote-for1vote-against

Exchange Student ...now that is an ideal! In for one of each...backpack and student!

vote-for1vote-against

There is no way you are finding a decent laptop bag with wheels for $20, and this shouldn't be a knock on a perfectly good backpack, because 90% of backpack users don't want wheels.

If you are going to be using a backpack regularly, wheels are a terrible idea. They (plus the pull handle) add unnecessary weight and if you are pulling a backpack with you everywhere it is going to screw your back up a lot more than carrying a padded 10lb bag on your back will.

vote-for1vote-against

@mike008us: Your 17.3" laptop measurement is DIAGONAL. It will fit.

vote-for1vote-against

@esquiretech: Compartment Height: 16”
Compartment Width: 11.75”
Compartment Depth: 1.80”

laptop bags are measured by true dimensions not the screen size so saying that if its 17.3" it will fit does not always apply. read the product spec and u will see that its gonna be a tight fit. my laptop wont fit even though its a 17.3" size. My dimensions are slightly larger than what the specs say

vote-for1vote-against

Wow. Never noticed people be so damned infantile on these discussions before. Are you really so wheel-phobic to get a kick out of "thumbs-downing" someone for preferring them? I kinda hope someone is just a few people trolling with multiple accounts, and that it's not a true community thing...cause that's just pathetic.

I've never been ashamed to be a Wootinean (Wootite? what are we supposed to call ourselves?) before, and I'm hoping that doesn't change.

< Also, sharing an opinion online in the hope that others will change theirs to agree with yours will usually just end up in disappointment; so please don't feel pressured to re-emphasize your disdain for persons with minority-held preferences. >

vote-for1vote-against

@mbourgon: Honestly, I was hoping somebody would suggest one WITH wheels, as opposed to the thumbs-down-omg-yore-such-a-wuss posts.

vote-for1vote-against

@esquiretech: Mike, thanks for clarifying that to the others lol.

my order still isn't here. It has been delayed TWICE.

I got this in the mail yesterday, took it to my classes today, and one of straps already broke..... :/

I wonder if anyone remembers when woot had Ohmetric bags?

vote-for0vote-against

okay maybe a stupid question but will I be able to jam my 18inch hp dv7?

vote-for0vote-against

@guraqt12: Ineed, I'm not trying to say that the laptop bag should have wheels; I merely think that there is no good reason to conclude that "someone out there preferring wheels" is...stupid? (I dunno what the best word would be for it, but I am shocked at how many people just jumped at the opportunity to make the idea sound universally lame or dumb or demanding or...whatever.)

People have put forth a number of good reasons why wheels wouldn't be good as a general feature for this product, but they are far from sufficient to imply that wheels would be a bad thing for this product for every potential consumer.

vote-for-3vote-against

@mdog0202: Actually, I think that's a MacBook Pro inside the bag. Can I get confirmation on that? I know there are lots of look-a-likes being produced right now, but that distinctive "sleeping" light on the front right corner combined with the single aluminum block look has me pretty convinced.

vote-for-4vote-against

Where are the wheels?!?

Just kidding haha. Nice bag but I don't like the 17.3" computer.

vote-for-6vote-against

Will this work with a MAC? ;-)

vote-for-9vote-against

@vicemagnet: I agree with the others that wheels sound a little over the top, for my needs. But I can also see a very natural reason (at least one) to demand wheels---maybe you'll already have something on your back (a backpack bookbag, a special forces army pack, a crying baby, a seductive lover...) and so you need a convenient back-up way to port the ol' thinslice computer around.

Anyways, what I want to say is that I think it's ridiculous you're being pounded for something that has quite a reasonable explanation, if people would just sit down and think for a wee lit'l bit.
