To all you Netflix Apologists: Fine. Whatever. Bend over and take it if you want to. The $$ per month is not the point. I won't argue that it's not a good value--it still is.
But I, for one, am tired of getting jacked. Jacked on fuel. Jacked on milk and bread. Jacked on a lack of honest representation in government.
I'm not going to get jacked by Netflix. I can do something about this one. As Anthony Hopkins said in Legends of the Fall, "Screw 'em!"
@foonatic: Id woot you 100 times if allowed.
@foonatic: If you don't want to get "jacked" on fuel, then brew your own biofuel. If you don't want to get "jacked" on milk, raise your own cow, feed it and milk it daily. Don't wanna get "jacked" on bread, then raise your own wheat, harvest it, mill it, roll your own dough and bake the loaf yourself. And if you don't want to get "jacked" on your movies, then start making your own, too.
Oh, what's that? You don't KNOW how? You don't have TIME? You can't AFFORD to buy land for cows and wheat and corn and sunflowers, let alone the tools to make the products you desire? Well then... what EVER shall you do?
Sure, you have the right to complain, but nobody has to listen to it.
I respect your right to complain. As such you should respect my right to believe and express that your complaints are unfounded. I attacked no-one personally. We don't have to resort to childish name calling.
Just because someone/a business wants to make more money does not make them GREEDY.
Damn, you all sound like liberal moochers with wealth envy.
I dare anyone to define GREED.... and since you'll probably give me something about excessive, or too much... how do you define when enough is enough?
@mnbeta03: Do you realize you are on the woot deals website snuggielover? If you want adult 'chat and commentary', try the CNN forums.
@llamabox: Right on brother.
@llamabox: And why would studios do that?? There's more profits to be made on an actual physical disc. And ever hear of a little product a company named Sony peddles called Blu Ray??? Netflix is trying to push it's 24 million customers out of the use of DVD's and thus Blu Ray media. Why the hell would Sony want to contribute to 24 million potential users of Blu Ray to stop using their product?? Why would Sony want 24 million potential consumers to stop buying PS3's and other Blu Ray players to play Blu Rays with just to jump on Netflix movie streaming wagon?? I have to say I think Sony swings a bigger stick than Netflix does and just might not be that appreciative of having their toes stepped on in such a big way.
personally I'm not to upset... right now I pay 9.99 for unlimited streaming and i dvd at a time. I never really get dvd's through the mail but use the streaming every day. With the price hike you pay 7.99 for unlimited streaming and if you want the dvd as well then you pay an additional 7.99 making it 15.99. if i can't stream it i'll download it. is that sticking it to the man (the studios) enough for you?
Oh, and if you switched your plan to streaming only and you use it alot better get Vios or Uverse because just like AT&T already has, internet providers are putting home users on usage plans like cells phones and there's no grandfathering in on that if you're already a customer. Do you have enough usage on your home internet to stream tonight??
@sixdolla: You got it!
There are plenty of free (or given free with other services) to get streaming movies and TV ... Hulu, Xfinity, FIOS, HBOgo, EPIX, etc. So if you already have cable TV then you already get free online streaming.
And Hulu is completely free (unless you want the small upgrade) and have all your TV, plus some movie stuff.
@llamabox: Who is John Galt?
But it works both ways. Producers who charge an amount their customers are unwilling to pay will not produce much longer.
Contradictions don't exist. Go back and check your premises.
Okay, anyone who didn't see the new rates coming from a mile a way is, and this is the nice version, an idiot. Anyone could see this coming MONTHS ago when they created the option of a streaming-only plan. They even said themselves,
"The fact is that Netflix members are already watching more TV episodes and movies streamed instantly over the Internet than on DVDs, and we expect that trend to continue. Creating the best user experience that we can around watching instantly is how we’re spending the vast majority of our time and resources." (blog.netflix.com/2010/11/new-plan-for-watching-instantly-plus.html)
They also said (again, in 2010) "We are now primarily a streaming video company delivering a wide selection of TV shows and films over the Internet." (geek.com/articles/gadgets/netflix-intros-streaming-only-plan-raises-prices-20101122)
COME ON PEOPLE. You CAN'T say you didn't see this coming. Stop whining and ditch the service. They don't need your business to survive, trust me.
For all of you complaining about NetFlix, I sure hope you aren't a cable TV subscriber. No company like your local cable provider knows how to over charge and provide awful service, not to mention the unannounced price hikes year after year. I cancelled cable over a year ago and pretty much use Netflix exclusively for TV. Even with the price increase they are still the best overall value in TV and Movie entertainment, so I'm sticking with them.
All the whining and boohooing about cost aside.. Why is something that is freely available all the time to ANY new customer even put on here?
Is it too much to ask with the price increase to add a little more to the streaming catalog..Too be hit with a price increase is ok, that happens all the time but to its disappointing to see that Netflix is having issues with just maintaining their current streaming catalog. Hell I'd like to see even old content that isn't expensive added on. I love old kung fu shows from the 70's and I know the lic is pennies. It's just the effort most of us would like to see if we are going to be asked for something more.
Before Netflix emailed me to notify me of the 60% price increase, I would have whole heartedly recommended Netflix. Now, we'll be cancelling our subscription as of Sept. 1st. 60% is just a money grab -- if you haven't read it, you should read the NY Times article about their price increase. Despite what some have assumed, Netflix says the price increase is completely unrelated to the cost of purchasing licenses from the content providers and studios. Apparently, it's because people THINK about their subscription differently than they did 9 months ago. Ridiculous. Whether I think I get 1-DVD-at-a-time for $9.98/mth and unlimited streaming for a $0.01/mth, or that I get unlimited streaming for $8.36/mth and 1 DVD-at-a-time for $1.63/mth is immaterial. Either the price is sufficient or it's not. Netflix admits they are making a profit from the current pricing plan. They also admit that they knew they'd lose customers but that they'd ultimately make more $$ this way. Nice.
@supertully: I am not a cable subscriber and have not been for years -- have a TIVO for OTA broadcast, HTPC, WDTV and Netflix subscription. Netflix will be gone as of Sept 1st. We'll probably try out Blockbuster All Access for $9.99/mth since you get unlimited free exchanges in store AND you can rent video games. Kids can try all kinds of new Wii games this way. Netflix may increase their profit margin in the short-term but they've damaged their long-term viability. With a single decision, they've gone from being viewed as one of the good-guy companies, to one of the bad-guy companies.
BTW, I agree with your assessment of cable providers screwing over consumers -- hence, no cable subscription.
@bestbuysucks Either your spouse pays your cable bill or you still live at home with your parents because nothing is free from the cable company. They may say it's "free" but you're definitely paying for it in their high monthly prices. I feel like I'm getting bent over every time I open my cable bill. Gotta keep wife happy though.
@kcmark - If Blockbuster works out for you then you have my support. The only BB plans I see though are at least $12, and I believe they are much farther behind Netflix in streaming capabilities. Of course, I am also of the opinion that Netflix has plenty of worthy content available for streaming, I can always find something to enjoy.
Deja Vu * breaking news.... Netflix file bankruptcy be end of 2011 year. due to heavy loss after price increased...**.
@supertully: i think youtube should work to capture the business because youtube already has app connected to same machine as netflix. i will support to youtube
Everybody knows that you get one month of Netflix for free . . .
So why is it that when i get on deals.woot.com to look for sweet things to buy I happen to see a netflix ad at least once a week?
Woot, please stop advertising netflix to me!
@abarcellos79: Because this is a Sponsored Woot. Netflix is paying for the advertising space.
I think it's outrageous. They upped the prices in January, and they're doing it again. It's ridiculous. They lost my business. They made tons of money when their prices will lower, I wonder how many others will drop their service. Some of us can't afford that much a month for DVD's and streaming. They beat Blockbuster when I first signedup, which is one reason why I went with Netflix. No thanks, I'm done.
Out of curiousity for those of you who vow to stop subscribing to Netflix, which service to you plan on switching to?
@khanada: Well I already have Amazon prime which comes with a lot of free streaming tv and movies ... Plus FIOS which has its own online movies and tv content. There is also Hulu which is free that has even more TV shows and some movies.
I have been thinking about keeping the DVD option only for $7.99 (I think that is what they are going to charge) without the streaming ... but most likely I will cancel all netflix ... then if I wanted to see something a little never there is Amazon On Demand which I can just rent something for a couple dollars. Since i would probably only watch maybe 2 DVDs a month anyhow it is not worth to keep the Netflix.
@khanada: I've already canceled my membership. As far as I'm concerned, Netflix will not be getting my business anymore. I will be using Amazon Prime as well
@khanada: [edit: keep it legal]
