It's 4.59 a jar at Genuardi's right now. Even the store brand is 3.18. This is definitely a good deal.

well, at least before this news about the jump in price, a 16 oz jar of pb should only be around $1.50 so unless this reflects the new price hike, this isnt that much of a deal. ill have to see what bjs does with their pricing cuz it was 5 lbs for ~$7.50 last time i was there.

My local grocery store has this size Skippy for $2.79/jar. Using "subscribe & save," this deal works out to $1.96/jar, with no tax.

Definite deal.

So probably peanut butter candy is going up too? Better buy this as well http://www.amazon.com/Hershey-Reeses-Peanut-Butter-ounces/dp/B001HXQPG2/ref=sr_1_1?s=grocery&ie=UTF8&qid=1318350466&sr=1-1

Someone feel free to post that as a deal if you'd like.

Darn it, I'm a choosy mom. So much for this deal

vote-for6vote-against

Hopefully whomever filled my car door handle with peanut butter doesn't see this deal. Half a week later, and I'm still cleaning out PB. That being said, this is my absolute favorite kind of peanut butter.

vote-for1vote-against

@beautyofmachines: I was a J mom too until we had a PB-off at work. I was sure my Jif was the best. Nope. Skippy won hands down. I am now a Skippy mom

vote-for1vote-against

does peanut butter go bad if so how quickly?

vote-for1vote-against

In for 1.

One thing I'm a bit surprised is the tax isn't calculated.

I live in WA state...having it shipped there... there should be tax on the final price.

I know from experience, my eConfirmation will have the tax, but I guess Amazon is keeping it hidden at checkout to make the price seem lower... heh.

vote-for4vote-against

oh wait... food item... no tax.

duh

I'll pass on this deal but I will stock up the next time I'm at Costco. I don't know their current price but I'm sure it's close if not better on a per-ounce cost. Thanks for the heads-up.

vote-for1vote-against

For anyone with a Ralphs (and I imagine any Kroger chain) nearby, their store brand tastes really close to Jif, and often goes on sale for less than $2 a jar. Last time I think I bought something like ten jars and they've lasted me a pretty darned long time (fresh jars still taste fresh, too).

People, be warned, there is a peanut shortage and its going to hit prices soon. The demand for peanuts (and peanut butter) will soon outpace supply because of the really bad growing conditions this year. Expect prices to go up by the end of the year. They had a story about it on NPR.

@darrol: I just bought a jar and it doesn't expire until November 2012.

vote-for2vote-against

Thanks mtryl girl. In for 2 packs!

vote-for3vote-against

$9.03 shipping to NY. $22.85 total. $3.80 a jar, Not a good deal for me.

vote-for1vote-against

@cab01008: I heard that same story and was about to post the same thing - just upvoted you instead :P

vote-for2vote-against

@irenegade: get 2 packs or add other items to total $25, then shipping would be free.

vote-for1vote-against

I just bought 2 packs and shipping was free.

vote-for3vote-against

@irenegade: Shipping is free with a "subscription", which you can always cancel. And I believe the price will alway be the same, which given the expected increase in pb prices makes this deal even more of a deal.

vote-for1vote-against

Thanks for the advice MTRIGRL and STANLES.
12 jars may be a bit too much PB for my daughter and I. The subscription thing sounds good, but I hate signing up for them, and spacing out on canceling-but I'll see if I can schedule it for 2 years.

vote-for1vote-against

@irenegade: 12 jars??? The deal is just for 6. I believe you can cancel the sub immediately in any case. I "assume" Amazon will email you before the next automatic shipment so that you can manually cancel that one. I have a sub for 8 O'clock coffee beans that I run out of way before the automatic shipment is due; I just go to my account and reorder (at the same price, free shipping).

@darrol: To address your original question, it has oil in it, so if you leave it sitting out long enough under bad conditions, yes it will go rancid.

I don't eat a lot of peanut butter and I've had jars start to separate as they approach the expiration date. You can just stir the oil back in, but sometimes the consistency is never quite the same. I generally take that as a sign it's time to replace the jar.

at the rate my puppy ingests peanut butter, these should last me a good month. I'm in for 2!

vote-for1vote-against

Skippy Roasted honey nut about the same price (actually a few cents cheaper):

vote-for1vote-against

@stanleys: Mtrigrl mentioned that shipping would be free if I ordered 2 instead of one. :)

Holy hydrogenated oils, Batman! Not to mention the added sugar. Guess I'll stock up on my regular brand for a little more $$ now, rather than a lot more $$ later...

vote-for-3vote-against

There are other places on the net that are still cheaper and they wont charge you the big bucks in shipping and handling!!!!!!!!!!!!

vote-for1vote-against

Stocking up on nonperishable protein for the zombie apocalypse and, like, yum.

vote-for1vote-against

Walmart sells 40oz for $4.74 here in Michigan. It is actually cheaper at walmart even if you chose subscribe at amazon.

vote-for1vote-against

This price is about $.14/oz., however
@ Costco: (2) 48oz. jars for $7.99 = $.08/oz.

Shelf life is about 1 year due to the oil content. I purchased (3) 2-packs yesterday. Should last me until the next crop comes in.

@asakasitz: No one else cares about trans fat apparently. It's enough to keep me away though.
