Hell of a game and a hell of a deal. Bought mine a while back at full price never regret it. cant wait for Civ V!
Gamestop's digital download service seems ridiculously restrictive, for 9.99 you get to download the game once, and you are not allowed to redownload it in case you have a computer failure? No thanks.
If my PC fails, can I recover my product?
If a trial version is available, follow these steps to reactivate your product:
1. Visit GameStop.com or EBgames.com and download and install the trial version of the product.
2. Start the product and click on the link labeled “Already Paid? Click Here”.
3. Enter the email address you used at the time of purchase and your account password to login and activate the product.
If a trial version is unavailable, follow these steps to reactivate your product:
1. Visit the GameStop.com or EBgames.com “My Account” page
2. Click on the link “To access your digital download account click here.”
3. Click on “Previous Orders” and click on the corresponding receipt to find a link to re-download and activate the product.
At checkout, for $3.95, they offer you the following:
"Download Insurance is a service that provides for a back up copy of the Digital Good(s) in your shopping cart to be stored for future download. A back up copy of these Digital Good(s) will be available to you for download for up to eighteen (18) months from the date of purchase.
Now there's no need to worry should your computer fail. Just login to your account to download the Digital Good(s) again."
Seems like they allow you to reinstall the software you own, as long as it is within their timeframe and you pay extra for the right to do so. I'd rather have a CD. This is a great price for a great game, but at a cost.
Save $30 and have to make my own backup of the game? Ya, I'll take that deal. It's called an external hard drive, blank DVD, or flash drive.
Is that the case, that you are downloading a freestanding installer that could be copied onto a cd or dvd or otherwise backed up? I was going off the info on the site which lead me to believe the only way to reinstall was over the web.
i already have this but i wanted to pop in and say that it was an amazing bargain just to be able to buy it for $60 new. you should buy this.
@belowi: Yep, stand alone installer.
Is anyone else having a problem with the checkout process? it says: "There has been an error processing your credit card! Please check your credit card details!" But the credit information is correct.
eds905- I was able to checkout fine about an hour ago.
inmyoffice- I decided to go for it, for $10 it's a great deal, and I also want to see how this direct download service works. Thanks for the info.
Ah, I originally posted on a duplicate of this deal. I'll post here again to see if anyone knows for sure:
Any ideas on when this deal expires? I didn't see a date on their site and don't want to run and grab it if it'll be available for quite a while...
I'd rather just spend an extra $10 and get it on Steam personally...
@jfade: Doesn't really look like a sale, it's listed as a "price drop". I wouldn't be surprised if they leave it at $10 via the download service indefinitely.
@darthninja: Good for you. You are free to pay any amount of money you choose. But some of us check these websites for the BEST prices.
inmyoffice- Have you tried to do a reinstall using backups of the original files that you downloaded with your initial purchase? I have already gotten my $9.99 worth out of the game since last week, but I did notice that the first time I ran the program it automatically went through an online verification process, which I assume involved doing something like checking a digital serial number for my downloaded app with their server. I'd imagine that if I had to reinstall due to getting a new system that it wouldn't work due to that number having been used, which makes sense because otherwise people could redistribute those installer files way too easily. Unfortunately I don't have any way (or reason, other than curiosity) to test this so I wanted to see if you or anyone else has had to do a reinstall.
