how is this a hot deal? this has been around for over a year now. Its called 2 for $20. You get a limited menu to chose from, consisting of almost all chicken based meals, and also, the catch is they charge you damn near $3 bucks per person for anything other than water to drink. $3 for iced tea...not hot.... 2 of you ain't getting out of there for less than $30 unless you drink water, don't pay tax, and don't tip (which would be a crappy thing to do to your waitress)

@commodog: How is that any different than any other sit-down restaurant? The only difference is this is about $10 cheaper.

vote-for6vote-against

@commodog: You have to make it worth your while and drink at least 4 liters of soda.

vote-for1vote-against

applebees has the same deal. has for years...

vote-for3vote-against

@benyust2: its not $10 cheaper. Most of those chicken meals are $9-10 a piece. The appetizers are $5 or less. You're saving $5 maybe, but really at $3 a glass of tea, you're not saving anything.

example off normal menu prices (and I'm going cheap):
buf ckn quesadillas $9.29 x 2 = $18.58
Chips and Salsa appetizer $2.99
Iced tea $2.75 x 2 = $5.50
Total = $27.07
Tax at 8% = $2.16
Tip at 15% = $4.38
Grand total = $33.61

They just raised the prices of drinks to make the meals "look" cheaper, that is what I am saying. It's NOT 2 for $20 at the end of the day

Why would anyone submit their digestive tract to the likes of Chili's, Applebee's, Friday's, etc?

vote-for6vote-against

@flavorwrong: because Chili's is awesome. duh.

vote-for1vote-against

@commodog: I'm replying cuz it wont let me edit and finish my other post

2 for $20 comparison to normal price menu:

buf ckn quesadillas $9.29 x 2 and
Chips and Salsa appetizer $20
Iced tea $2.75 x 2 = $5.50
Total = $25.50
Tax at 8% = $2.04
Tip at 15% = $4.13
Grand total = $31.67

savings of $2.05 off regular price which is better than nothing I guess

@tp546: Man I forgot about that one. Trump card every time. :)

vote-for1vote-against

@commodog: Well, yeah, if you are getting the chips and salsa app. (which has to be the cheapest thing) I'm sure the cheese fries are more than $2.99. Even a half-order has got to be at least $5.99 (I can't find prices on their menu online which means it probably varies by geographical loaction). So, it really depends on the prices in your area and it seems your prices are cheaper than where I live.

vote-for1vote-against

@benyust2: texas cheese fries are 3.99 for half order, which is what you get with the 2 for $20

vote-for4vote-against

Maximizing my utilization of the discount, this might save me $5. That's not enough to make me eat their microwaved crap. Go to the grocery store and buy the ingredients for a much better meal at home. It doesn't take much skill or expense to replicate anything at chilis, with better quality ingredients.

vote-for0vote-against

@tp546: No! No! No!

Chili's is AWFUL. We got a Chili's gift card for Xmas. Worst restaurant food we've had in 5+ years. Thankfully, it was free, but it still wasn't worth enduring the drek they served up. Never, ever again!

vote-for1vote-against

On the plus side, it's 2 for $20 at Chili's.

On the down side, two of you are eating at Chili's.

The awesome blossom is pretty awesome though.

vote-for2vote-against

I love Outback Steakhouse. They have great steaks and always had good service there. Best thing at Chilis is their fajitas with chicken, shrimp, and steak. Other wise meh... Oh and Outback has the hotter waitress'

vote-for1vote-against

Regardless of where this deal is, it's hardly woot-worthy when it's advertised on every table and in those coupon "newspapers" that come out weekly.

vote-for0vote-against

just sit in the bar area and get free chips and salsa, you just have to ask for it.

vote-for1vote-against

C'mon guys, give illuminaughty69 a break. He just learned how to use the internet and share the good news with us.

vote-for2vote-against

It's freaking Chilis.. it'd a crappy chain restaurant. Find a local place to give your $20.
What do you people do for good Italian? Olive Garden... no you find a good local place. Tastes worlds better and your money isn't going to some billion dollar corp that happens to have a restaurant as a subsidiary just like it owns a vacuum cleaner company

vote-for1vote-against

Applebees throws in a shared dessert with their $20 dinner for 2 deal.
People this is all promotions and marketing. Valentine day to mom day is the slowest time of year for restaurants. This deal isn't so amazing . It's an illusion the Chilis makes their profit off the drinks. $2.50 for a soda that costs Chilis 5 cents. The to go cups cost more to Chilis than the drink itself. They will also try to upsell you a dessert or 2 they want you to think " I just spent $20 for dinner yes I will splurge on desserts!"

This $20 "deal" will be $30+ before you leave. If you are not careful.

vote-for4vote-against

@whitlock929: Chili's is a chain because people like their food. Your crappy local Italian place isn't a chain because (most likely) not enough people like it to make it a chain, or the owner is a poor businessman, or some combination of the two.

Or maybe it's a front for the mafia. Those are the only three reasons why a piss-poor local Italian restaurant doesn't become a chain.

vote-for3vote-against

You eat what ever people feed you don't you? You probably like Nickelback and Justin Bieber that's what corporate suits do to music. Chilis, applebees, ruby Tuesdays etc are what corporate suits do to food its all the same.

The local Italian restaurant has been around packed for over 60 years well before the olive garden was thought up. They do it right and fresh they don't have tractor trailers dropping off the same frozen chicken that also goes to 5 different chains because its cheaper

vote-for3vote-against

@oatlord: That is a pretty retarded thing to say. There are tons of restaurants that aren't chains that make huge amounts of money and have world class food simply because their owners want to have creative control of their menu because they care about having a quality dining experience.

Not everyone is looking for a big corporate sellout.

vote-for1vote-against

@whitlock929: WTF is a Bieber?

Whatever, Chili's is delicious. I go there daily with my boys to get my grub on. Your local Italian place can't compete.

Italian sucks anyways. Bland, boring pasta sauce on some noodles, mix in some pretentiousness, and voila, you have an overpriced meal you can sell to schmucks who frequent the local Italian restaurant.

Speaking of, you own your local Italian place, don't you? That's why you're so upset at Chili's. Don't hate.

EDIT: In all seriousness, your local place most likely gets their supplies from the same exact place that the chains do: Robert Orr Sysco. In fact, I'd be willing to wager that several of their entire meals are delivered straight from that company, especially the desserts.

vote-for2vote-against

I'd rather eat at Chili's or Applebee's because all the local places either SUCK or are priced 3 times as much. At least I go into either of those places with realistic expectations than walking into a local place with high expectations and then getting cat food with Sam's Choice tomato sauce.

vote-for1vote-against

@commodog

its also a crappy thing to do to your waiter.... just sayin'..

vote-for3vote-against

@oatlord: I've worked in a lot of kitchens, and no, the good locals don't buy their food from Sysco, just their condiments. So if you judge the quality of a restaurant by the quality of their ketchup, you'd be right.

Chili's/TGIF/Crapplebees/etc. would be the McDonald's of sit-down restaurants, if it wasn't for how much you pay for the luxury of having a wait staff. It's the same quality of fast food, but with more artificial flavoring, salt, and fat, and in a larger quantity, for ten times the price (drive-through places are actually somewhat healthier because they get more scrutiny than flare-chains).

I haven't worked for one single independent who served Sysco pre-packaged crap as a main course, side, or dessert. The worst offenders just used jugs of salad dressing instead of making it from scratch. My cheap-ass pizza joint down the street makes all their dough from scratch (including the bread they use for sammitches), and ten bucks nets me a hot meal and two more leftover meals.

I have NEVER had bad food at CHilis. Fridays on the other hand...

Take her to Fazoli's or Steak and Shake AND a movie for the same price...

I can't believe that nobody has yet brought up the awesome Chili's analogy.

To each their own, some people just like to eat at Chili's.

Er, the linked site may not be completely appropriate for work...

throw in their frequent kids-eat-free with a paid adult (2 kids per adult) and our family gets boneless buffalo wings, 2 baby back rib entrees, 2 adult sodas, 3 kids meals with MILK (free refills on kid's milk at chili's, unlike other places) and we only paid $32 with tip & tax.
deal.
pay the extra $1 for the sirloin and it makes it an even better deal.
