Why/how is this "debranded?" and what are the repercussions of this sketchiness :c

Amazon for $200

vote-for2vote-against

@miquinn: lol...It is not sketchiness. It could be one of several things and HP does it more often than most. It MOSTLY means that HP is not giving any warranty and had their name removed from the product. Most probably (but not definitely) it is an outside refurbished item.

vote-for3vote-against

bought the 25" model for $50 more through the same site.
debranded, refurbished, etc just like this one.
LOVE. colors are incredible. fantastic for gaming, although i've never used a monitor that's less than 5ms for gaming.

bought one just because I love the 25" so much. will replace this crappy 21.5" acer i'm currently dual screening with.

was a little gun shy when i saw debranded and refurbished, but i'm so glad i went for it on the 25" that i didn't even think twice about this one.

vote-for12vote-against

Excuse me? This is not debranded HP, it's nothing of the sort. This is 100% genuine 'Famous Maker'. In fact, I am typing this using my 'Famous Maker 2509m'.

Famous Maker makes some damn fine computer equipment.

vote-for6vote-against

@miquinn: LOL I'm pretty sure that was a tongue in cheek comment about "Famous Maker" as Woot has , in the past , used "Famous Maker" quite a bit to describe monitors

vote-for-3vote-against

@mizzellmichael: i figured, but just was trying to clarify :D

vote-for-9vote-against

@justabandnerd: famous maker monitors ARE HP monitors, just without the HP logo and warranty... hence the term "debranded"

vote-for-1vote-against

@mizzellmichael: you never know... there are people who buy ipads in a parking lot and wonder how they got ripped off when its a fake http://youtu.be/nb0GrTdFS8M

vote-for10vote-against

My Famous Maker monitor had a big sticker in the back. I peeled it off and it was imprinted with the "HP" Logo...

vote-for3vote-against

I have this monitor. It really is an HP. I also just ordered another of these. I paid around $170 for this the first go around from Newegg.
I have 4 monitors now, and this is by far the best looking. Really a fantastic model.
My only gripe is that it doesn't have VESA holes, but some fabrication work-arounds do exist.

[edit] Like others have mentioned, when HP refurbs its monitors, they slap "Famous Maker" stickers on it. There are still hard etched HP logos underneath.

What does "What You Get:
• HP Debranded 2311x LED Monitor"
mean? Does this imply I don't get any cables with this at all?

vote-for1vote-against

Just picked one of these up. Thanks for the deal!

vote-for3vote-against

@pstang: That's a nice mirror, well worth $200. I don't understand why she is so upset.

vote-for2vote-against

I love my 23" famous maker monitor. Two observations.

(probably) no speakers. That's what I wanted, till I plugged my camera into the HDMI port and found I had no way to get audio.

Description never mentions the external power supply, I'm assuming that's the case with this one too, hard to fit that in a such a slim case.

vote-for2vote-against

So this has no speakers or audio out port? Thats too bad. I use my PC monitor as my XBOX 360 tv also and this would have been a nice upgrade, but not without any audio.

vote-for2vote-against

Well this is an issue. No VESA mounts. No wonder they avoid showing the back.

vote-for2vote-against

Almost bought this until I realized I already have this monitor. It's a sweet monitor and very bright.

vote-for2vote-against

I have a debranded HP monitor has it has been my main for the last 2 years. It's on its third year and going strong (as one of side monitors in my tri-monitor setup). Everything is great on it. I don't think I've ever seen "famous maker" or "debranded HP" monitors on Woot ever since Amazon landed them which is a shame.

If you're getting this and thinking about dual, tri, or more monitors for your rig, I suggest getting more than one at a time so you know your bezzels match, colors, etc. Not to mention that this is a very good price.

vote-for-4vote-against

Not a good deal at all. I picked up this monitor almost 2 years ago brand new for $10 more

vote-for2vote-against

@dyaballikl: I had one like this without the Vesa holes. Turned out the tapped screw holes were there but filled in with plastic but you could see were they were. I took a pointy steak knife and burrowed out the plastic using the knife. Now I have it hanging on my wall.

vote-for4vote-against

@disposed: not sure how you did that this monitor came out in 2011

vote-for2vote-against

I've purchased three "Famous Maker" monitors from Woot and only 1 of the 3 lasted more than a year. The two failures were due to premature CFL failures and weren't worth repairing. I was almost going to click the order button on this one since it's LED backlit until I read that there is no VESA mount. That's a shame. I don't have a single LCD or LED monitor or TV sitting on it's stand in my home or office. Everything is wall or pole mounted. Sure makes cleaning up, dusting, etc. easier!

vote-for2vote-against

I bought a 25'' refurb over three years ago from Woot,as we all know,a debranded HP.It has run great, have never had a problem with it,plus,no dead pixels.

vote-for3vote-against

@disposed:
How about posting CURRENT pricing comparisons where we can get it branded for $10 more. My time machine isn't working right now so I can't go back two years to buy the monitor.

vote-for2vote-against

in for one for a triple monitor setting ! (i have two other 2311x)

vote-for2vote-against

I have 4 of these, and they work great. I have no problem with Famous Maker. If the re-branding bother you, you can just take off the sticker and reveal the HP logo.

vote-for2vote-against

in for two for a Quad monitor setting ! (i have two other 2311x).. actually, 2 hooked up to personal computer, and now 2 to hook up to work laptop (woohoo, better WFH options)

vote-for1vote-against

Wow, I have to jump on this. Been looking to upgrade my dual monitor system, and was looking at 20" on Black Friday for this price. 23" for the same price and no black friday hassle.
SOLD! and thanks to everyones reviews that helped me purchase with confidence.

vote-for5vote-against

Also you can't see the back to find that this does not allow portrait mode. Back view here:

vote-for1vote-against

Someone commented there's no audio on this monitor. Is that true?

vote-for1vote-against

Is there a way to connect speakers to get audio?

Also, does this not include the power cables?

vote-for-2vote-against

does this have a built-in tuner?

vote-for2vote-against

@dwberrett: If you look at the image I posted right above your post, you will see there is indeed no audio input

vote-for1vote-against

@dhorn1981: No tuner, just a plain old monitor

vote-for2vote-against

I have a couple of these monitors, they are indeed HP monitors, refurbished by Hannspree or TCS or other third parties. You use HP drivers and they perform as well as any HP refurbished product

vote-for1vote-against

There's no VESA holes to mount the darn thing... ran into this problem with the 21" at work. Wouldn't buy another HP monitor unless it's got mounting holes.

vote-for1vote-against

Be careful dealing with this company. I've had issues with them with false advertising and refusing returns. Plus they sell FOR other companies so you never know who you are really dealing with.
Read their return policy - scary.

vote-for1vote-against

My debranded HP 2509M still working great after 2 years. Ii's was easy to rub off the blacked out area and reveal the HP 2509M lettering. I also was able to replace the generic globe sticker.

vote-for2vote-against

@skipray22: i do not know why you asked this question, this is not a TV. The sound input comes from the computer (you need a speaker). It does have its own separate power cable which is included.

vote-for1vote-against

People don't realize that HP doesn't make everything by themselves. Just like SeaSonic makes a large amount of OEM power supplies for other famous brands like Corsair, Antec, XFX, etc. There are a lot of "re-branded" companies around the world. This is no surprise...

vote-for1vote-against

yeah... what the hell. does it not include the power cable?!

vote-for1vote-against

As far as I can tell, it's not as easy as scraping out holes to mount this. Here's a thread that explains a somewhat easy way of doing it.

http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Audio-Video-Monitors/VESA-Mounting-a-2711x/td-p/450805/page/3

I think I'd rather just pay a little more and get a VESA monitor though.

vote-for1vote-against

So, has anyone had a positive or normal experience with this seller?

vote-for3vote-against

@jrhorn424: I have good, bad and indifferent with this seller. Nothing that did not eventually work out.

vote-for4vote-against

@jrhorn424: I have purchased from this seller many many times in the past year or two. I have never had any issue that was not resolved. The products are refurbished usually, sometimes overstock for other items. They are legit and safe to deal with and mostly everything I have purchased is fine, the one time it was not they immediately RMA'd the item

vote-for1vote-against

well.... for anyone who every looks at this. it came with cables and all pretty quickly and has been working great for a solid couple weeks. very happy with it. but I never did get any replies to my emails asking about the product :c
