tempting deal
This would be a much better looking laptop without the textured finish. Great deal for a good laptop otherwise.
A quick review:
http://www.gadgets-freak.biz/hp-g62-407dx-amd-phenom-ii-p650/
The description says it's upgradeable to 8 gigs of RAM, can I do that through the manufacturer still? Do I just send it in to HP? Do I have to install it?
Wow, so tempting! My mom wants a laptop, I wonder if she would like this one. She's looking for something basic, just for email/fb when on travel, but larger than a tablet and with a real keyboard.
@komposur3: It's probably just a matter of removing a small panel underneath the laptop and putting the extra memory module in.
@komposur3: Only for a big fee. Actually, putting memory in a laptop is not a big deal. Just make certain you're getting the correct memory, turn off the computer, take out the battery....and follow the instructions on the HP web site for adding memory carefully. I've done it and its not a big deal. You can get after market memory (I used Kingston) at a fraction of what HP will charge you.
Question: What are doing that will require more memory?? For general web browsing, document editing, etc, the three gig would probably be sufficient. Based on the rest of the components, you're not going to do a whole lot more than that with this box. (Its a decent deal, and for general use its quite sufficient. Put ubuntu on it as an alternate OS and it will run great..with 3 gig.)
This is very tempting after my 4 year old hp died last weekend...review says WoW with 20-30fps that would work. Now to find $300 in the couch cushions.
@edterrific: Ditto that! I've put new memory in a laptop before, very straightforward. Watch out for static and all that, but otherwise simple.
@edterrific: I didn't look into the CPU before asking about the memory, I suppose more RAM wouldn't really be all that beneficial on this rig would it?
@edterrific: I agree, memory is easy. Is changing out the hard drive just as easy, do you know? If/when I spring for a laptop I might like to swap out the hard disk for a speedy solid state drive.
Bought this new from best buy, but had 4 gigs of ram. I dont use it for gaming, but for a completely wireless computing experience you cant go wrong. Up to 4 hours. Then plug it in. The color/texture scheme is a little weird, but it grows on you. 6 months in and cant complain. Could use a firewire though.

Anyone know anything on the quality of refurbs? I probably should have asked this before I bought one. Essentially I just want something that will last me for my final year in school, after that I dont care...
Does this thing have a touchpad? In the picture it doesn't look like it.
of course it does. Have you heard of a laptop that doesnt? Look under additional photos "keyboard and touchpad"
@komposur3: It depends on what you are doing with it ... not sure why you would imply the the CPU is lacking. I don't know why you'd pay someone else to install RAM either so I guess it makes sense.
Anyway there is no need to upgrade but if you did, adding memory would be good but I would also look at adding a hybrid drive or even ssd for performance improvements. Unless you are transcoding media or something else really CPU intensive - the dual core CPU won't be your bottleneck.
Does this have a webcam? Hard to see from pics
Is this Wi-FI ?????? I can't find it anywere.
@annf: Yes, but why on Azeroth would you want to play WoW with 20 fps? You wouldn't even be able to run.
I hate laptops because of the touch pads.
I LOVE THIS LAPTOP. HP got the touch pad right on this model I can type away without tapping my cursor all over the place.
A relative owns this laptop.
@ltava: Yes, it is wi-fi, from the discription Wireless: 802.11b/g/n
802.11b/g/n = wi-fi
I previously purchased a refurb HP laptop and have had no issues with it for 6 months now.
@ltava: Yes, in the description near the bottom: "or wirelessly connect to a Wi-Fi signal or hotspot with the built in 802.11b/g/n wireless connection"
Also looking to verify that it has a webcam. None in description but pic looks like it might. Anyone? Thanks
In for 1! First time buying a refurbed laptop, hopefully it doesn't bite me in the @sss.
I'm also wondering if there's a webcam or not. The picture seems to have one, and other sites with this model number list it as having one. But the description here doesn't...
According to the review link posted a few comments above, it does have a webcam. "Other key features of HP G62-407DX are as follows:
* 5- in-one media card reader
* 3 USB 2.0 ports
* inbuilt webcam with microphone
* 802.11 b/g/n wireless networking..."
As long as it will run my Fantasy Football Live Scoring on Sundays from my couch I'll be happy. In for 1, replacing a 4 year old HP laptop that has worked well
The resolution for a screen of this size is too low. 1366x768 is the resolution I have on my 14" ASUS UL80Vt, and after 1.5 years of using it, I find myself wishing it were 1440x900. On a 15.6" laptop such as this one, I would say 1440x900 is the bare minimum and you'd be even happier with something like 1600x900 or greater.
Is the RAM DDR2 or DDR3?
The specs on HP's site say DDR3, but the woot specs say DDR2
I've had nothing but a headache with my HP Pavillion. Bad nic card, terrible wireless that cuts out randomly and only comes back after restart, and chintzy plastic. Hardly made it two years without epic fails in the hardware. Not worth even the $300. Never, EVER, buying HP again. Get a good deal on Newegg or Tigerdirect for an ASUS or SONY. Much better quality and service.
@xenoxgaravito: the woot specs now say DDR3, FYI. I saw the same thing and while I was researching, it seems like they changed the woot listing? Either way, looks like it is DDR3.
Somebody had posted this earlier but with all the questions about what it has or doesn't have - i wonder if people even opened the link

HP is garbage. I have ordered a large number (in the 100's) of computers for work from: Dell, Lenovo and HP. Across the board, the HPs are garbage. They, without a doubt, have the flashiest designs, but have had the worst reliability of the bunch. If there is a way for them to take a shortcut (by using a cheaper part), they do it. Then they make the externals nice and flashy.
The webcam is the little circle you see at the top of the screen. I have an HP dual-processor laptop. Not this model. It has 3g memory and I have tons of stuff on it and still have a lot of memory left.
I've always have had HP laptops. (My first one lasted FIVE years!) Here is the kicker. Pretty reliable, but they run hot. So, you can't play a lot of games on them. I have the cooling fans, I have it raised, but just at idle it only goes down to 48C (I use coretemp - it is a free download) and this makes playing games a little challenging. You can't play WOW or anything even near that on it. Very little games on Facebook for that matter, to give you an idea.
BUT! If you just want it for email, internet, etc, seems like a good price. I've never bought refurbished, so I can't vouch for that.
I also wanted to add that my laptop is on several hours a day. I have an online business and I also go to school online.
So, poo poo to HP being garbage. Ok, maybe the desktops, but definitely NOT the laptops.
I'm in for one. Call me a sucker, but this seems to be a great deal for a fairly good computer.
Why can't I down-vote comments I don't like without up-voting others first?
I hate you amazon.
For an extra $100, I got a solid Toshiba at Best Buy. Didn't have to wait for shipping, works well, not a refurb. I don't work there, and am not promoting for any gain, but Best Buy generally has great deals on comps.
I own this exact laptop, I can tell you it does NOT have a webcam, that little circle at the top is the microphone. I have had mine for a little over a year and love it.
@nsaan: Oh damn! I wouldn't have bought it had I known that that is the microphone.
All in all good specs. 320GB is sufficient for most people and although it won't be as fast as a SSD, it should suffice. 3GB RAM is fine for web surfing and listening to your itunes collection, but I would consider adding some memory if funds permit.
I love that it has a ATI video chipset and doesn't use the Intel garbage. I also really like the memory card reader as that is awesome for loading pictures. I'd have to spend a few minutes removing the typical HP bloatware and toolbars, but all things considered it is a solid machine.
Considering this is half the price of a iPad and has 10 times the storage space it can be a great alternative for a lot of people who just want something to check facebook, watch YouTube vids, manage iTunes, or send some emails. It can also use the full office Suite so it would make a good college laptop.
Obviously it isn't a Macbook Pro by any means, but you could be 4 of these for the price of one Macbook, so you sort of need to pick your battles.
drats, thats what i get for debating it over lunch
Will DDR3 1066 memory work? What other types of DDR3 memory will work? I couldn't figure out the difference.
Thanks!
If this machine is the HP G62-407DX With AMD Phenom II P650, it says it has a built in HP camera, do I have the correct model number?
@pcp777: what are you referring to by "it says"?
Either way, I think you're right, see: http://www.amazon.com/HP-G62-407DX-Notebook-Phenom-2-6GHz/dp/B004NWF100/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1312568694&sr=8-1
@nsaan: I don't know where you got the info that it does not have a webcam. I just received a response from support@woot that confirms that it indeed does have an integrated webcam.
Phew. lucky me!
I am typing this on this exact laptop. Yes it has a web cam at the top of the screen, right next to the little hole for the microphone. The webcam actually works quite well. Whoever is saying it doesn't is a noob. The only real complaint I have, aside from the 2 hour battery life is that I HATE Windows 7. The textured surface took a little getting used to, plus you can't 2 finger scroll with the touch pad, the "scroll bar" is the right 1/4" of the touch pad, so it took a little getting used to.
Dang...tried to do research 1st and then was sold out. Anyone know where I can find it for a similar price?
Just curious. Does It is normal for Woot to charge twice for one laptop but in two different transactions(Paypal and Debit transaction. Customer service via email is kinda slow so Im asking for your opinions. Thanks
@silverhawknike: You're a little late on the comment, can't buy one anymore. That being said, no, I do not believe they take two separate transactions.
