So how bad are these computers?

vote-for12vote-against

Well, it's an Intel Core2 Duo. Which in my ever so humble opinion, is still a really capable processor. Unless you're one of those cutting edge gamer hardware sycophants, in which case you'll be by to denounce this listing for ever existing and decrying what kind of unwashed philistine would ever run a processor from a few years ago.

However, on the gaming front, the listing is completely devoid of graphics card information. If it doesn't have capable 3D accellerated graphics, you wouldn't be able to play even old 3D games well, if at all.

I would be more interested in the battery life and potential battery replacement cost and availability. They're 'furbed, so the battery should be ok. But batteries also die. Listing does mention a second battery, and if I'm reading it correctly you can install them both at the same time.

I'd say it's an ok deal. The price is about right. Just request they not install any of the extra software that they say they're going to load it down with.

Hey Wooters!! I just wanted to let you all know that this laptop will come with a second battery and we're here to answer any questions you might have about this deal. Also, as an added bonus, the first 45 people to place an order will get a FREE docking station for the laptop!!

vote-for6vote-against

Since it has a "b" in the model number, that indicates it's a business laptop. These are very robust and of a much higher quality than the consumer laptops. Not a bad laptop at all, unless you are just a gamer.

vote-for8vote-against

I'm in for one with the docking station.

vote-for3vote-against

How do you know if you are in 1st 45? Not going to jump unless I know I'd get the docking station...

vote-for4vote-against

In for 1!

You can also upgrade the RAM (I got and additional 2 Gb for $29 more)

As for the free dock, if it shows up on the website, I think you'll know you're getting it.

But a Core 2 lappy with 4Gb RAM and a dock for just over $300?!?! Couldn't pass that up!

vote-for4vote-against

@phanham: When you go to the page, you can see in the available options if the dock is still avaiable as a "bonus item" .. It looks like when those are gone that box will no longer show the bonus available.

vote-for4vote-against

@baronz: You are 100% correct. We will remove that option when the docking stations are gone.

I am using a 6930b right now and love it. Upgraded to 4GB of ram and it is my go to model for our office. These are indeed good little laptops!

graphics card info? I'm not finding a list of the specs. If you could post that, it'd be super helpful.

vote-for4vote-against

@hoodsbreath: The only thing it says is "Video: Graphics Intel integrated" which is I'm sure not what you are looking for...

vote-for3vote-against

@hoodsbreath: The graphics on the laptop will be Intel GMA X4500MHD. I hope this helps and just let us know if you need anything else!

vote-for4vote-against

For the gamers, this wont cut it... The GMA X4500MHD graphics chip was circa 2008 and uses your ram for video memory. About the only modern game you will be able to play will be Sims 3. Most others on even the lowest setting will be sub 10fps so don't expect this for gaming. It should be fine with HD video though as this chip was built to allow blu-ray playbacks on slow processors. So fine for movies, but not for games.

Some thoughts on these as I have a rather good number deployed in my school department. The keyboards are pretty fragile, I have to replace keyboards on these more often than any other computer I've worked on.

Not sure if these models come with a webcam, some do, some don't. If that's important to you than make sure your's does.

These are, overall, pretty solid computers. They aren't light and they aren't super fast but they do run decently and, keyboard issues aside, seem to hold up reasonably well. They are a good deal at $274.

Edit: Yeah, no webcam built in.

I find the most surprising aspect of this machine to be the screen size. From the picture it looks like a non-widescreen display, which is quite uncommon these days!

Unless I'm missing something, this site does not use SSL or any kind of encryption. Even though your payment is processed externally, you still send your info to the site without encryption. I would not risk submitting your credit card and personal info without SSL. Poor form web store.

What's the docking station do, then?

vote-for2vote-against

I recognize it as a laptop often used by myself and co-workers. They have always been great to us. As far as why their so cheap is probably because whatever business it came from either liquidated its assets or upgraded. I know my company is upgrading to newer elitebooks. So for all I know it could be one of my previous laptops.

vote-for2vote-against

@kenlee: It supplies ports often associated with a normal computer, ie: more usb ports, possibly printer/parallel/serial ports, vga / video out puts, non usb mouse / keyboard ports.
Any charges laptop as if plugged in... pretty much turns it into a desktop. Ports and stuff vary though probably

i'm using that model laptop right now. it's been dropped, stepped on by my kids and generally abused and it's still going strong. I upgraded the memory on it and it helped quite a bit. If you are a grown up and don't think every computer made needs a bigger power supply, it does just fine.
Not everyone needs a "khewl gamer rig"
