This handy dandy panflute flowchart is relevant here:

Nothing picks up the ladies like an Ocarina!

@gwintner: But... this isn't a pan-flute. It's an ocarina. KNOW YOU NOTHING OF YOUR WIND INSTRUMENTS, FOUL HEATHEN?!

vote-for1vote-against

@gwintner:

But what if you need a panflute?

@kexline: Ummm.....find me a better deal on an authentic "Ocarina of Time" ocarina.

deals.woot isn't JUST for cheap crap, it's for deals that people would be interested in....like hard to find items or unique items.

He's got a very valid point. This sells out pretty fast and has been off of thinkgeek for a while; even if it is overpriced.

vote-for1vote-against

at the risk of sounding ignorant, why do the two look different? Is this actually function as it should? If so, what is the difference between the two, the other one seems longer and elongated

vote-for2vote-against

A lot of it has to do with Pitch. But, they're essentially the same instrument with similar fingerings...

vote-for1vote-against

@dapballdude: Also I believe that different ocarinas have a different range of notes. The Zelda one, for instance only has 6 holes whereas others may have more holes which allow you to play a larger scale of notes. I could be wrong tho, I'm no expert.

@mmaurice01: Except you can travel through time with this one.

vote-for1vote-against

@shadowdragoonftw: I said it was relevant. But you're right, an ocarina is totally different than a panflute and indeed is far more critical to ... errr ... making a quick escape after you've angered the local chickens?

@bwieland: No you don't.

I like how they say it's an official replica, but it's not the same as the one in the game. The most obvious yet most overlooked detail? The one in the game has a silver bar around a portion of the mouthpiece. THAT is what has the Triforce imprinted on it. See here:
Stupid "official" replicas being incorrect...

EDIT: I'm really, really not trying to sound like a loony here. Honest. It just happens sometimes, okay?

EDIT2: And here. http://www.cracked.com/funny-3592-ocarina-time/

vote-for1vote-against

@coolascrap but of course! I thought that was an obvious difference... didn't think it was worth pointing that out!

vote-for1vote-against

@shadowdragoonftw: I agree, I noticed that immediately....guess "authentic" is a bit of a stretch.

vote-for3vote-against

@mmaurice01: I bought this. It does NOT compare to the real thing. The plastic has horrible sound and is only good if you're giving it to a child.

vote-for2vote-against

These can be gotten directly from the source at http://songbirdocarina.com ... Mr. Songbird also has a much better replica there (metal band, gems for a triforce, larger range, etc). His customer service is also second to none. Really. :D

edit Oh, the 'better' replica is still not exact, as it's right-handed (for usability sake) and... well, I'm sorry to say it won't transport you through time or make it rain or anything like that :(

vote-for1vote-against

@zia lia: I didn't say anything about quality... all I said was that they were the same instrument. It's like buying any other instrument. You can buy your shoebox model or you can buy a professional model.

vote-for1vote-against

Bah, it's hardly authentic if it doesn't let you travel through time or open Doors of Time.

vote-for1vote-against

I'm a pretty big gamer, but this is a little too nerdy for even me...

vote-for1vote-against

My coworker has one and plays it randomly throughout the day.

vote-for0vote-against

I've got a real one that I inherited from my dad. don't know how to play it though. Also have a zither.

vote-for1vote-against

@gwintner: Yeah. But this is an ocarina that can manipulate time. Who wouldn't want that?

vote-for1vote-against

@spoonyspork: Thank you for the link, he makes very beautiful pieces. His OoT seems basically perfect and sounds wonderful. He also has a bunch of videos on Youtube linked through his site of playing alot of the classic Zelda songs on the Ocarina, definitely put a smile on my face. Good old times.

It really made me want one lol

vote-for1vote-against

@nemmyx: You should get one! Nerdy as they are, they sound wonderful and are fairly easy to learn. I warn though -- I started playing 4 months ago and now own 10 of them. I actually don't have any of the replicas, but I have two of songbird's ocarinas (dragontooth and a plastic one from another maker sold through him) and they sound awesome :D
