OMG!!! These were very popular when I was living in Tokyo in the mid 80s! Cost about $1 (or something like that - it was a long time ago!!!) and it pretty much was a throw away item but then Japan had some pretty intense typhoons!

Japan Odd Fact #1: Japan is very safe and almost theft free. Public areas to leave your umbrella or an area to leave your bicycle near the train station litter the countryside.

Some umbrella stands have locks but most do not and very few are ever stolen even when the stands are outside on sidewalks where customers go inside a cafe or such...

Bicycles are a little different. They have a flimsy lock that any kid could easy remove. Some bicycles are stolen, usually by drunken salerymen, and every once-in-a-while the police set up a sting! A couple cops stand around a blind curve and stop some bicycles checking to see if the owner can prove it hasn't been stolen! If a mistake has been made many deep bows!!!
