I often wonder about paracord. I sure wish I'd bought into a paracord business before the prepper boom happened! It's useful stuff, but I suspect it's more often worn by preppers to self-identify, sort of like those red caballa string bracelets celebrities used to wear.

Yeah, I have rope and twine in my truck with a toolkit and it all gets used, so it's not like I don't believe in general preparedness, but there are few situations I can imagine wherein I would be in deathly need of paracord. Pocket knife? Sure. Use mine almost daily. Rope saw? That's really a stretch. Paracord vs just some handy cord or rope or twine to tie something down? Hard to think of very many likely scenarios.

Wow, that shop sells steel balls for weaving 'self defense lanyards.' Where the heck do these people live that they need to carry defensive weapons but have to settle for lanyards?

@rbward: They live anywhere. My wife works in the service industry, where she gets cash tips. After work, about 3 years ago she was mugged while she was about to get in her car late at night in an almost empty parking lot. THANK GOD, all they did was take her money. After that she was very afraid when she would leave work, and so were her co-workers. To help get over the trauma she started taking some martial arts classes. They gave her a 7" long key chain with a 1" steel ball at the end wrapped in a paracord monkey's fist. She really did not like the idea of carrying a hand gun, which I suggested and some of her co-worker do now. She always carries that key chain now, ready! It can happen to anybody at anytime. I tell you what if that happened again that key chain would MESS THAT THIEF UP big time!
