Seen this deal work for 4 people with existing Windows Live accounts but did hear of one person who didn't get the deal after creating a new account... may only work for existing accounts.

I did this, but the site stated that upgrading storage would cost me $10 a year. I did not have an option for a free 25GB plan.

Any suggestions?

[edit] I had an existing account, not a new account.

vote-for2vote-against

@drfaulken sorry... I have no idea. Seems kinda weird that it works for some and not others.

vote-for15vote-against

I think you have to have an existing Skydrive account to get this deal.

vote-for2vote-against

Just got it on my school-supplied Live account and my Hotmail account I've had for a long time. I've used Skydrive for sure for my school account, but don't think I've ever used it with my Hotmail account. So, who knows.

vote-for1vote-against

I don't actually use SkyDrive that often, but just in case I do...

vote-for2vote-against

Worked for my husband's account! There was a bubble that said free upgrade for existing customers!

vote-for4vote-against

EXCELLENT! I will soon have all of the cloud to myself with all of the free space I keep getting! MS, Google, Yahoo, Asus, HP, Dropbox etc. etc. etc.

Is this the type of thing you can use to back up files so that if the computer dies completely, they can be retrieved? Dumb question probably, but I was thinking I really need to back up my ten year old Dell running XP.

I had gotten Skydrive to test with Windows Phone 7 phone recently.
Just logged into Skydrive and claimed the 25Gb storage. (up from 7Gb free)

Thank you.

vote-for3vote-against

Didn't work for me, either. Already had an account with 7 GB that I've never really used.

vote-for1vote-against

Just worked for me, except I got upgraded to 25 gigs from my existing 7 gigs

thanks

I'm amazed at what people post as "deals." This was posted online two weeks ago and, yes, all articles and such that I've seen say it's only for existing SkyDrive users who got "sold" a 25gb storage plan and are getting down-graded to a 7gb plan. Is it helpful for those that didn't know? Sure! But it's not deals.woot material...

Several articles were posted. Here are some examples:

Got it! i had a long-time existing account - i think it's the age factor that's coming into play here

vote-for3vote-against

Thanks for this! I love the free stuff!

I have a work and a personal Skydrive account set up. Neither one had the upgrade option.

Actually, SkyDrive has been around for about 5 years offering 25GB online storage. The only nuance is that if you created an account now you will only get 7GB of free storage. I've had this account for about 5 years.
If you created a new account after the end of April, you get 7GB. If you had this account prior but didn't exceed the 7GB or come close, they cut your storage down to 7GB. I had more, so I was granted the 25GB of storage. Now you can sync your files.

@twinnii: Which is what happened to me.
I didn't keep a lot of stuff there, so I was downgraded to 7gb.
But this worked for me, so here I go with 15gb free space!
Thanx @jakeneeley!

Cool worked for me. I don't use skydrive or hotmail but maybe this will come in handy one day.

vote-for3vote-against

Awesome deal!!! need to be an existing subscriber though....

vote-for1vote-against

Brilliant move for Microsoft. Thank you.

vote-for1vote-against

Never used it before...but might give it a shot with 25Gb of free space.. MS is def trying to beat out the ol' google machine, but google is still eaiser to use. Worked for me, after going to manage storage.

vote-for1vote-against

had 7gb now have 25gb, thanks poster!

Microsoft has also released a Windows7 Client for Skydrive. When you install it, it creates a SkyDive folder in your User folder that automatically syncs with your Skydrive storage - anything you drop into that folder get's sent to the cloud, anything you upload to the cloud gets sent to the Skydrive folder on your PC - couldn't be simpler.

Personally, I think it's too simple - you can't control what gets synched, or when, and you have to copy or move stuff out of your Pictures dolder into the Skydrive folder - you can't right click on an arbitrary folder and say "Send this to Skydrive". Apparently Microsoft has decided that writing Software for Smart People isn't a growth market, so even the Smart People have to make do with Software for Morons :-(

I tried and when i go to manage storage the only free one is my existing 7gb storage and the other ones have the prices that go along with the upgrades

vote-for2vote-against

I believe you have to have an existing microsoft live ID. I had one, although never used Skydrive for any storage. When selecting the plan upgrade a popup said "a free upgrade for our loyal users" implying only those with ids prior to this upgrade are eligible.

But I got it just fine, still aren't using it, but hey, it's there if Amazon and Dropbox suddenly disappear.

vote-for3vote-against

I already had an existing account, didn't work for me. I have the default 7gb and I have to pay for any upgrades. Boo.

vote-for5vote-against

Hmmm, I can't get 50Gbs total...

Oh, you mean that this is the same 25Gb bump from weeks ago?

vote-for2vote-against

didnt work for me. i have two accounts i made about 2 months ago and 1 i made just tonight. none gave me the free upgrade option. =( any ideas?

vote-for2vote-against

@bored301: same thing happened to me. :(

vote-for2vote-against

It worked for me! After adding the free upgrade, it said something to the effect of "thanks for being a continued Skydrive user". That may be why it is working for current users.

vote-for2vote-against

Cool - it worked for me! Thanks!!!

vote-for2vote-against

Worked for me. Went from 7GB to 25GB, thanks!

vote-for4vote-against

Existing account here. No "Free 25GB plan" option. Sad face.

vote-for1vote-against

You have to be an existing user. When you reach the "manage my account" page, you should see a script pop-up that says you can upgrade your account from 7Gb to 25Gb for free. Just worked for me.

vote-for3vote-against

tried my personal account first and it didn't work. tried my work account and got the 25 gig upgrade. tried the personal account again and still didn't work

vote-for2vote-against

I've been using Windows 8 for many months...currently Win 8 consumer preview which dual booted perfectly on my netbook (better have 2gb RAM), and a windows live account was required during the installation. Just upgraded my skydrive from 7GB to 25gb. Thanks!!!

vote-for1vote-against

All good! It added 20gb to my already free 7gb. Nice!

vote-for3vote-against

@bowsewr: On wikipedia it says the upgrade is only available if you joined before 4/22/12

vote-for2vote-against

Worked for me. I've had my account for many years.

vote-for2vote-against

This is pretty sick, and I'm nabbing it while I can, but I would also like to mention that Google is also offering 5GB of free space with Google Drive. If you're like me (a loyal Google fan) you might want to check it out. I know, 25GB beats 5GB by a lot... but hey,

I <3 Google. ;P

Multi-year year hotmail user here--worked for me! It had a pop-up that said:

"Free storage upgrade For a limited time, loyal SkyDrive users can upgrade from 7 GB to 25 GB for free!"

vote-for1vote-against

Worked for me using a hotmail account. Thanks OP!!

vote-for2vote-against

Worked for me on 5/8/12! Thank you Microsoft for the free upgrade to loyal customers and users! Thank you for posting this one too!
