Leo Laporte just finished a Live streamed videocast from behind SXSW and Diggnation using one of these monopods attached to a network camera.

He called it his staff because it had a giant light attached next to the camera. It looked like it worked perfectly, because it allowed him to carry his 2nd mic in his other free hand.

I don't know what this thing is = I shouldn't buy it.

It's like a tripod, but only has one leg. I have one that is not carbon fiber. I love it. If you take photos inside, and at events, sometimes they won't allow tripods. This is an easy alternative. While it does not give you the stability of a tripod, it's offers just enough stability to stop camera shake. I wish I had $50 to spare! This is a decent deal! Hell, a good carbon fiber tripod with a swivel head goes for $500+!

Will this inanimate carbon rod save my life if the door on my space shuttle breaks?

Keeping my eye on one of these... ~$70 shipped from B&H Photo.

I got one, beats $97.99 on Amazon.

@claudicina: Thanks for the explanation! You were more helpful than the write up today.

@stark:
Yes, but it will get all the credit, not you.

@stark: Is there such a thing as an animate carbon fiber rod?

I must be missing something.

Fifty dollars for a STICK?!

I am clearly in the wrong business...

I'm a photographer. I use a monopod when I shoot sports, mainly football as it supports my lens which isn't practical to hand-hold as it's large and heavy. Other than that I don't have a lot of use for a monopod, sometimes I use it when I am in a low-light situation and there isn't much subject movement, it will let you get a better shutter speed.
Best thing about this one is the carbon fiber, it would be lighter than a metal one and if you are on your feet all day carrying a big lens a little less weight can be a real good thing.

Where's the jalapeno?

But, seriously, this is a good deal for this particular monopod. At least 20 bucks savings.

I got one in a boc a couple months ago. Makes a good walking stick.

60" is kind of short for a monopod. Your camera wouldn't even be to eye level.

@infinitewill: It would for me, if I had it fully extended and the camera on it, I'd have to stand on a stool to look through the viewfinder. Not all camera owners are gigantors, you know.

I thought this was like a beating stick for when you go on walks and stuff when I first saw it.

Is this sold out? Doesn't say so, but can't buy one.

heres a video of one: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jeremyjohnstone/4430516153/ I watched a two hour podcast from one, and there was no shaking of the camera and looked like it was easily twisted to rotate side to side.
