Kershaw Folding Knife for $12.99 + $5.00 shipping
Now the president wants to ban knifery? WHERE DOES THIS SOCIALIST NIGHTMARE END?
I have a Leek and love it and carry often. My other EDC knife that I carry from time to time is an ESEE Izula. Obviously these aren't in the same category but for the price they're decent. Good for carry if you're prone to damage/break/lose your knife or to stash in your glove box or bag for when you need to open something in a hurry. I ordered one of each for gits and shiggles.
I'm assuming these are the serated blades (boo) due to the photo but I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised with a lack of seratations when it comes.
I got one last woot, love the knife, HOWEVER, the blades aren't very strong, the tip snapped off during normal use, nothing heavy duty or nothing, but at the price, you can't beat it.
I'd dawdled too long on the last Kershaw deal, and wasn't able to get the ones I wanted. In for one of each, yay!
I used my free shipping coupon to make the deal even sweeter. Sold.
@robertb: >Is there any way to sharpen a serrated blade?
Here is the easiest way I know to sharpen a Kershaw serrated blade:
1. Pack up knife and mail to Kershaw.
2. Kershaw will sharpen it for you, for free. And then mail it back to you at their expense.
3. Done.
I'm not sure how someone cut through sheet metal with one of these knifes when I have multible knicks in the blade of my compound after a month of light use. The tip is also bent slightly from being dropped onto wood. The metal doesn't hold an edge for long.
My personal favorite knife is a Benchmade Griptillian. I've never had a problem with it and the knife holds the best edge I've ever seen. Never a dull point on the end in the 5 years I've had it.
I might have bought one, but with this BS lead in about socialist nightmare stuff, you couldn't give me one. Very bad taste Woot, very bad. I done with Woot if it gets political. There enough if this propaganda already from the NRA and like groups.
@ryepug: > Are these knives compatible with 10.6.8? I refuse to upgrade to Lion, the UI is a step backwards and it's so annoying.
No, they are not compatible. And since the knives are serrated, they work with only two versions of Linux:
Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal)
Fedora 16
Maybe Mint if you know how to hack it.
@bneal123: Thanks, I've bought USA made Kershaws before and wondered why these were so cheap.
This is my first Kershaw.
In for one Asset.
Great deal w/$5. coupon !
Bought a Kershaw Burst here at Woot a few months ago and I love it. Perfect everyday carry knife in terms of size, weight, apparent durability and edge.
And the Speed Safe design is pretty much the idea system for quick deployment.
Wish I'd bought two.
I Wooted two of the non-serrated "1940 Compounds" about a month ago. I’m hoping today’s offering of the "1940 ST Compound" is the serrated version it appears to be, because I bought two more "1940 STs" a few minutes ago. Even if they are not serrated I’ll still love them, as I do the two I bought earlier. They lock up tight and that ball bearing in the mechanism makes the opening as smooth as butter without any need a spring or a torsion device of any sort… simple, effective and (should be) durable.
Everyone I show the knife to drops his jaw when I tell him the Woot price. I don’t buy a ton of stuff from Woot, but I bet I’ve added at least 20 more buyers to their customer roster with my recommendations. Hell, everyone likes to brag about his own bargaining power, even if it is tiny.
@bneal123: just not true. They are made in China (and that's stamped on the grip) but they are fully warranted - they are Kershaws.
Order with confidence, people. These knives are a stone bargain at these prices.
Nice little video on the features of the compound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ok9iY5dew5o
@sdbcmr: Yep, you are correct. No argument from me ;>)
In for one of each at this price. They make nice blades.
This is a nice EDC.. I have a Spyderco with that 8Cr13MOV and have used it heavy duty for the last 6 months.. It's a cheaper Chinese steel but let me tell you, it can take a beating!
i use the asset in my fishing kit to gut trout; it's so pointy!
I have a couple of these knives. They work very well. I use them for hunting (skinning elk/deer etc.). They work great. Kershaw is a great brand and will hold the edge just right.
@unkalledfor: ((8Cr13MOV and have used it heavy duty for the last 6 months.. It's a cheaper Chinese steel but let me tell you, it can take a beating!))
Agreed. Although 8Cr13MOV is a 'cheaper' steel I've found it holds up quite well for 'heavy duty' use and due to the 'softness' of it compared to other types it is much easier to sharpen as well, although you do need to sharpen more often under heavy use versus the 'harder' high end steels.
And as most should know there is alot more to it then just 'what type' of steel is used. Lots more determines overall quality.
Quality manufacterers know how to 'make each type' while non quality manufacterers dont have a clue. Thats why its best to stick with quality names as you know regardless of the type of steel, they know the best way to make/treat each type for each 'application'. For instance 1428 series (or any type) may be treated one way for one application but treated differently for a different application.
I'm a knife collector, and I know that Kershaw is one of the more respected knife makers, and makes GREAT knives.
That said, here's some info:Kershaw, like many knife manufacturers nowadays, has opted to have some,if not most,of their knives made in China,to save money,I'm sure. The parts are the same, and sometimes made elsewhere, like the USA or Japan,or even Germany, the knives are just put together in China.I have noticed that for the most part,Chinese made knives coming from respected companies like Kershaw have excellent quality,(especially lately)but if you're a purist, this will not matter,as hardcore collectors still want knives made in the USA,Germany,or Japan, which,by the way,are getting harder to find, and are getting more expensive.German made Pumas,Japanese made Seki's,and USA made Kershaws are sweet knives, but you will pay dearly for them!
One of each for me! Adding to the collection...
Hey, y'all ... don't feed the trolls, 'kay?
@wootforthestars: Very well said. Your 100% spot on :>)
Although, I too am an avid collector and yep, I have plenty of USA made and will buy many more and I love em'. I do consider myself a 'purist' in that regard, however, even tho I LOVE my USA high end blades and KNOW they are better then the China versions, I still buy plenty of china blades and love them for the quality and money, assuming they are coming from reputable names & arent these $1 China cheap azz junk so many are selling for $10-35 (im shocked at how many people pay that much for that flee market junk)
Just got mine today. Once again, blazing fast shipping from Woot! I got the compound knife which is the one with the less aggressive handle. It has a very smooth assist mechanism and a very strong frame lock. My only concern is the tiny pocket clip. It looks like it belongs on a cheap keychain knife or something, I just don't think it fits right. But still, definitely worth the $20.
I bought both and love them! Kershaw has always been one of my favorite knives and at this price- you can't beat it!
Got mine today, WOOT surprised the heck out of me, usually shipping takes forever so wasn't expecting them till next week. I got 1 compound and 2 assets (based on reviews seemed like better knife). Both knives are great, very fast smooth open. Wish i would have got 2 or 3 of compound tho because overall its a lot better quality then the asset, looks better, blade thicker stronger and the clip that i was worried about by the reviews seems damn near as strong as the one on the asset, its a lot smaller but seems like a better material. Overall I am pleased with both knives, Thanks WOOT!
Got mine today (Asset). Didn't realize when purchasing that these were made in China, so that was a little disappointing, but my own fault really for not looking it up. Price should have told me that.
That being said, it is still very nice. I have several other US made Kershaws and love all of them. This one is made to similar standards, is very smooth and feels nice in your hand. One thing I don't like is that it is THICK. Here is a picture comparing it to my Leek:

Not including the clip, the Asset is 9/16" thick, with the leek being 5/16". I don't think I'll be carrying this in my pocket, but it will be nice to throw in the car or as a spare in my backpack on trips.
And for those who don't like having to flip the knife over to open it, there are holes on the opposite end of the knife so you can flip the clip around. This is how I prefer it anyways.
